View Full Version : Why the hell did Venus enter Acapulco???

No logic whatsoever here!!!
She is in Dubai, which is played on hard court and she entered Acapulco which is ON CLAY when she knows she's has an important HARD court month ahead!!!

I think she did this so she has an excuse to miss Indian Wells.

It'll be interesting to see how she does on clay!

If she gets a Wednesday start I don't see a huge problem with it  If she flies on Sunday and arrives there in the evening, she should be fine by Wednesday!

 She is crazzzzy, but I like that she can practise clay - perhaps she wants to avoid an AO repeat at RG by getting some early stress free practise in so she can redeem her poor record in Paris

On clay? What a nightmare match up.

Maybe she wants to get some practice in while she misses Indian wells or something?

Uh.. Hello she already entered Acapulco before she lost 2r! Geez. I mean I'm sure she wants to practice more on Clay in competition but it's not because she's getting ready to not repeat an early loss.

It is an odd choice

Yeah, let everyone steal Aga's tournaments so she would end up playing Birmingham so she'd play for 6 weeks in a row :worship:

Like me, she probably lost 40-50% of her net worth in the last 6-8 months, so she's doing what she can to make some big bucks to replace it.

Tennisstar86
Feb 20th, 2009, 08:43 PM
Prolly because she wants to be top 4 by the french open so she and Serena arent in the same quarter? Every point helps, she wants the clay experience..... The other top players prolly wont be there. If she wins it and the Miami she'd be in striking distance if not ahead of Jelena and Dementieva.

Believe me, she has never done well with 3-weeks in a row.

Go back year after year and find me a example of successful 3 weeks for Venus.
When she done ok, it is because she lost early in the first week.

Either she is exhausted, injured or loses badly the 3rd week.
Usuually, at the end of the second week, her techniques breaks down.

How did she do the end of the 3rd week in Guangzhou?

I am talking 3 weeks , 3 different tournaments, 3 different places, involving travel.

Venus is entering Acapulco because with the change in the schedule, the WTA has dropped tournaments for which Vee has points to defend. She not only has to replace those tournaments with new ones, but also she has stated repeatedly that she wants to improve her ranking.

Since Venus didn't play 16 tournaments and had that mysterious absence during the clay season last year, she is in a good position to add points from every tournament she enters

yep since 2005 clay court season shes always done sumthing funky with her schedule. I think she needs more then Madrid to practice on red clay before the french unless she wants yet another R 3 loss. Acapulco doesnt count cuz shes playing on hard weeks later n all will be forgotten by then. Plus she wont even have much time to practice on clay in mexico before she has to play a match. shud be interesting :tape:

Or if she does actually show up and play this event it could just be a part of her penance for skipping IW and playing here would be considered the "punishment/promotion" as a part hushly negotiated plea agreement between the WS and the USTA to avoid an ugly media spectacle

When was the last time Serena played that many tournaments like that? Never.)

By winning Antwerp V secured the no.1 ranking 2 weeks later..... I still remember watching the scoreboard for that final lol.

Like people have said it's because of $ plus it's a place V has never been to.... but I agree strange scheduling....

Money? Interested in visiting a new place? Also, nice practice after a long break.

I also think the differences in surfaces is overrated in the women's game. Everyone plays the same style on all surfaces. Aside from the shift from clay to grass, it's not too extreme especially with these mid-week starts tournaments are having. If anything, Miami is a weird island in her schedule as I believe she plays on clay after Miami.
That being said, 2 tourney wins in a row (if she can win Dubai and Acapulco) would be awesome going into Miami where she hasnt reached the SF I believe since 2002 where she lost to Serena if I'm not mistaken.

Venus has said before she loves visiting new places. The extra cash wouldn't hurt either. More or less sums it up.
