"I’m dead, from too much promoting this tournament and not enough practice.” said Billie Jean King after her 1st round cliffjhanger. Francoise Durr was almost the death of her. Durr has a point for 6-5, missing a passing shot by half an inch. BJ—“I should have lost the match there.” King was trying out contact lens, but burning eyes means a return to her famous glasses. Durr was teed off on leaving the court, declaring “She’s playing in America and has all of the people for her.” The excitement of the Durr-King encounters throughout 1971 spice up the tour.

King later in the event “I’ve got my wheels back and feel great”

Billie Jean drew fellow top tenner Durr in the first round. She survives 4 match points, rallying from 1-4 to win 4 straight points, the last in ‘sudden death”. Opening day drew 1,200.. The second 1,300. Durr “I thought I had the match. But do you know what was going on in my mind when I was a point away from victory? I thought: the tournament is going to hate me for this.” When Durr floats a forehand long she sits down on the court in disgust-spent, she last set is a formality.

3,500 on hand for semis(a full house) and 3,200 for finals.Husband Larry was tournament director. BJ’s mom Betty was in charge of ticket sales.King’s first hometown events since 1961.

Dalton is distracted by noisy and talking fans, at one point talking back to the crowd after hearing laughter .”I know I’m not playing very well, but you could help me”. A talking crowd also bothered Ann Jones. Inept ballboys and umpires who failed to tame the crowd a feature of play.

Casals and King run their unbeaten streak as a team to 30-Rosie’s powerful and acrobatic shots have the crowd gasping as they beat Durr-Jones for the 7th straight time. On not being able to beat King this year: “People ask me if I have a psychological hangup—Right now I think she would kill Margaret Court-she’s playing that well.”

Durr on Casals: “Rosie has so mant shots she can hit that it’s too much for her own good-she hit the wrong one at the wrong time”

King on the final: “You see how one flaw can be fatal? She missed some crucial backhands when she needed them. One flaw like that will kill you every time.” King ties Pauline Betz’s record of 4 straight US Indoor titles.

Durr: “I need a rest. I’m not sure I’ll be back next year. After six years of this there has to be a place to stop.”

Notes: One of the weakest fields in years. Only Court was in the World top ten, though Goolagong would be in that group later in 1971. Only 4 foreigners showed, and one of those, Gail Lovera (nee Sherriff), was a born Aussie. The new Virginia Slims circuit began in January, taking away most possible foreign entries, and even class Aussies such as Kerry Melville Reid and Judy Tegart, both top tenners. A star was born in the women's final, as Evonne Goolagong stretched Marge to the limit, leading 5-2 in the third. At that point cramps became too much for the young lass, who lost the next 5 games. It was Court's second Aussie final win where her opponent was done in partly due to cramps, echoing the 1965 final.

Total Attendence was 45,000. The whole event lost $110,000. Gate receipts were $35,000.

The top prize of $5,000 makes this the richest "Women's Lob" event yet. Now that the USTA has backed down on banning the girls they are debating opening up the circuit to all commers such as Margaret Court and Patty Hogan.

The opening round match between newly married Nancy Richey Gunter and Ann Jones is a classic. The New York Times calls it "the strongest advertisement yet for the women's circuit. Jones proclaims it "would have brought the house down had it been at Wimbledon." For 2 hours 33 minutes the battle royal raged on. Gunter came within two points of victory in the second set tiebreak at 3-1. "But Mrs Jones won 4 consecutive points for the set. Two points were unbelievable winners, a lunging forehand passing shot down the line and a forehand crosscourt passing winner."

Bartkowicz pushed Casals, leading 7-6 4-3, with a point for 5-3. Peaches has groundstrokes "like a hammer", her two handed backhand still being a rarity. What she lacks is a volley, and the steam goes out of her enguine after she misses a sitter volley for 5-3.

Casals on Peaches: "She really runs you. You have to stay with her all the time and keep changing the pace to get out of a hitting groove."

King tops Graebner in the first round-this will be their last career meeting. Billie Jean's QF match is over so quickly she takes 10 minutes out to teach ball boys how to volley!

BJK got some resistance from Jones in the semis, but she runs away with the second set tiebreak bt hitting a slew of winners.

Before the final the King-Casals head to head read 6-0 for 1971 and 17 of their 21 meetings. King has won 36 of 38 matches up to this point.

With that kind of baggage Casals was given little chance, but a slightly off form King and Rosie's solid play produced an upset. Early in the match Billie Jean dumped four straight returns into the net, a sure sign she had lost some of form. Rosie kept charging the net. According to King. "We really didn't have many rallies."

Near the end the crowd of 1,300 wondered if Rosie could finish it off. After all, there is widespread belief that she pysches herself out in matches vs her good friend. Casals take is: "I don't think I get pysched out against Billie Jean. I think people just forget that she's a tough tennis player."

Billie Jean suggested later that poor lighting (several sources mention how hard it was to see) and light balls affected her performance. "I've lost in 3 tournaments this year, and in all 3 tournaments they've used lighter balls. I don't want to make any excuses though, because Rosie served very well. I just wasn't getting any balls back."

The Masters was initially cut from the Carribbean schedule this year until the Slims tour picked it up as stop. Billie Jean gamely chose to support the event by rising from her sickbed to play, flying in from California the night before her opening match. Months later she revealed that her illness stemmed from an abortion.

When she came up against "tiny" Chris Evert it was all too much, and the King of the Slims tour was temporarily dethroned by the new queen of clay. Chris was so unknown at the start of the event that the New York Times calls her "Everett" when she upsets #3 seed Durr in the first round. In the end they get the spelling right! As an amateur Evert saves the tour $2,000 in cash, as she turns down the prize money.

The "tall blonde" world #1 takes home $2,956. Court said of Evonne" "I gave her no pace because she loves it when her opponent hits the ball hard. Also, I played her down the middle. She likes it when you allow her to make angles." After falling behind 2-3 Court never looked back, reeling off 11 of the next 12 games.

Evonne thrilled the crowd of 5,000 when she said she would return. The part-aborigine's decision to enter South Africa made headlines due to the nation apartheid policy. Tournament director Owen Williams declared, "She has been a great drawing card and a delightful person to have in the competition. We hope to have her back again next year."

The $30,000 purse is a record for a women's event, eclipsing by far other records and ending the 14 week tour with a bang. The other stunner is the person who gets the record $9,000 for winning it all-none other than Ann Jones.

Conditions were rough all week, with winds regularly blowing hot air and sand up to 55 mph. In addition the high altitude and low humidity made balls fly.

Uniquely the #1 seed played the 16th ranked player, #2 vs #15, etc.

Match of the week was King-Gunter. Both women had had issues the past weeks-King was ill and Nancy was out with a tonsilectomy. Nancy had points for 4-2 in the third-Billie Jean hit winners on every one.

On the day of the semis the wind was so severe matches were delayed 45 minutes until the wind died down to 30 mph. Both were blowouts by King and Jones.

All week Jones had been singing "I'm Leaving on a Jet Plane". Little wonder, as she's been playing week-in and week-out since January. At least Ann had her husband Pip along for company. A relaxed Jones (she knew she was flying back home win or lose) faced off vs a not so fiery Billie Jean. King didn't scream at herself once in losing. Conditions were again so miserable one player swore it was Bournemouth, not Vegas. Ann has won in the wind tunnel at Bournemouth many times. When Ann won a 15 deuce game at 4-4 in the second it was all over. The result carried over into the doubles, where Frankie Durr made incredible gets and King just hung her head.

Tour Money Totals after Vegas:

1. $33,500 Billie Jean King
2. $27,500 Rosie Casals
2. $27,500 Ann Jones

Evert's amazing come from behind win over Eisel in the 2R (she saves 6 match points in a nationally televised match) sets off a frenzy of media and fan interest. Grown tour vets are reduced to tears as the crowd cheers "Little Miss America" on. Billie Jean, convinced the future of women's pro tennis is at stake if Evert wins it all as an amateur, ends the Floridains Cinderella dream in the semis. The other sensation of the year-Aussie Evonne Goolagong, won't play here, a decision made by her coach-manager Viv Edwards.

King gets a Ford Torino car for winning in the finals. During the presentation ceremony Casals got a big laugh by suggesting Larry King take care of his wife for the other gals by making her pregnant. On seeing BJ get into her car Rosie cracked that the least the Slims tour could do was give the finalist a bicycle.

FI Casals/ King d. Dalton/ Durr 6-3 6-2

The PSW's low prize money in 1970 (12-1 in favor of the men) had been the spark that started the whole women's only Virginia Slims circuit. Jack Kramer has tried and failed to get all the women banned. All of this history came into play in the finals, where Billie Jean and Rosie put up with what both thought were numerous bad calls from one lineswoman in particular. King demanded the lineswoman be removed. The umpire gave her word she would do so when Jack Kramer (commentating on TV up in the booth) sent her a note saying the lineswoman stayed. Kingpicked up her racquets and walked off court. Rather than be declared the winner Rosie followed!

The infamous episode remains the only double default in tennis historyafter both sides have takem the court. Casals and King got a lot of press-most of it bad, and the PSW was doomed never again to be a major event for women. LA Times writer Jim Murray really lays into King, writing she was "a lousy loser". He went on with "her father got her into tennis so she wouldn't be a lady
wrestler".

A historic event-for by winning the final Billie Jean becomes the first woman ever to win more than $100,000 US in one year. The crowd gives her a 10 minute ovation as Billie Jean and Rosie pour champagne over each other in celebration. This was Virginia Slims last event of the year. Against all odds the circuit has been a smash success with Mrs. King it's leading lady. Pro women's tennis is here to stay.

Billie Jean is dissapointed because she "wanted another crack at Evonne", but the Aussie's backhand breaks down vs. Durr. In the final Durr rebounds from 1-6 2-5 0-40 to she stormed back, even having a match point herself at 5-3 in the third. King "agression personified" pounces on Durr's weak serve-the air going out of Francoise after missing her match point. The venue was cavernous Wembley Stadium. Crowds were nonexistent except the last two days, even ever smiling Evonne Goolagong appeared unhappy. After her semi Evonne said she felt as though she was only practicing. Without her coach for the first time ever the young Aussie looks lost.

One person who certainly leaves happy is King. She takes home her 18th event of the yeat, 1,000 pounds, and 4,000 pounds bonus for finisging first in the Pepsi Grand Prix.

Patti Hogan causes a rukus when she refuses to shake Penny Moor's hand after losing. Patti threw her raquet and argued throughout the match

The social highlight of the circuit is the Saturday night caberet put on by the players. The bad boy (Bob Hewitt) and bad girl (Patti Hogan) of the circuit get together to parody each other. Both are notorious for bad language and questioning calls. Patti plays "Hewitt" while Bob plays "Miss Hogan" and the whole crowd had a great laugh.

Evonne plays the Dewar Circuit without her coach. The odd semi score is misleading-all the games were close, Julie's spins and tactics ("miss Heldman was at her most Machiavellian") winning the day. Wade had a great circuit, completing a recovery from a broekn ankle suffered in America. Wade sweeps the field "in her most imperious manner". The final must have been especially delicious for Virginia, as Julie Heldman had written an article for the London Times the previous Sunday which dissected Wade's game and it's weaknesses. A fired up Wade slammed her shots with extra gusto.

The Aussie LTA tried to prevent Dalton, Melville, and Hunt from playing here because it conflicted with Queensland. The women had better prize money in New Zealand ($7,500 as against $300 in Queensland) and decided to ignore the threat of suspension. The LTA's petty revenge was to omit them from the national rankings and to seek to have all of New Zealand banned from IFT events. Needless to say none of the women went to the Aussie, and Kerry was thrilled after winning the whole event.

On court action saw Francoise Durr tank her second set in the quarters after losing a decision after she demanded the tournament referee come out. Though her opponent agreed Durr's ball was in the umpire refused to change the call. After being told the line call stood Durr lost the next point, and with it the set. She clapped her hands and said "Thank you" to the umpire and referee. Refusing comment after the match ("Don't ask me to say anything or I'll say rude things") she booked the first plane out. apparently Francoise HAD said some rude things "in French", because the umpire came off the court in tears.

More Durr drama took place when she got into it with Billie Jean King. King wanted an extra day of rest due to a strained knee. Durr told organizers no way. "There were several angry excahnges but eventually Biliie Jean acceded. The atmosphere on the court was a bit frigid, to say the least."

Controversy ensued when it was revealed that Evoone was paid a $1,500 appearance fee by Queensland newspaers-5 times the amount of the total prize money for the entire field. It was her price (or more exactly, that of her manager Viv Edwards) for not going to Auckland as planned. Christchurch and Auckland had originally offered Viv $1,000 to secure Evonne. In the end she played Christchurch and returned for Queensland, neatly picking up loads of cash and avoiding the LTAA ban imposed on Melville and Dalton. Auusie newspapers blast the LTA for it's "veiled" threats to ban ban Evonne. One wonders if the papers defended the other Aussie gals who don'y have the star power of Goolagong or Court.

Speaking of Court, she will be absent as she prepares for the birth of her first child. The LTA doesn't realize that the amateur era is a thing of the past or that Court is pregnant, as she got 4 letters from the LTA telling her she must be back in Australia by October 1st or risk a ban. Court just ignored the letters. An LTAA official was quoted as saying "Margaret should have signed that form and come home by October 1 . Now she risks our telling the ILTF that we don't hold her in good standing."

Most definitely TV! What a personality she was with all her shots, not taking lesson until close to 20, the foot stomps, the accent. Long live the Durr!

..and of course the fact that she was often Virginia Wade's doubles partner:)

Reading all these 1971 results is highly interesting but it confirms what I previously thought that BJK would have ranked number 1 if computer rankings had been in place then.Whatever mathematical format was used. She was playing week in week out to support the tour and winning 18 times in the process.I remember reading her original 1974 autobiography and at the time some of the "experts" who did the rankings (subjectively) at that time did not seem to rate/recognise the new Virginia Slims tournaments for their true worth compared to the more traditional tournament circuit.

John Dolan's book gives the 1971 Billingham result as "Cathy Lorrains" bt Penny Moor walkover. World of Tennis 1972 gives a "C.M. Lorraine", who won the women's doubles at the South Northumberland tournament 14-19 July 1971.

Hi Rollo - not sure if I am posting this in the right place - feel free to remove it - trying to find your source for the various quotes (King, Durr, Dalton and others) you found for the 1971 San Fran, Long Beach and Boston tournaments, and where you found that Billie Jean's mother was in charge of ticket sales for VS Long Beach - would love to include that information in my research - thanks! “I’m dead, from too much promoting this tournament and not enough practice.” said Billie Jean King after her 1st round cliffjhanger.

Rollo - I have tons of photos from Chattanooga, but not the "Women's Tennis Here!" photo (if they exist) - got them from the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga library - and about one week ago I interviewed Steve Chazen, who was the tournament director - he had some very interesting stories! I'll post the photos from the tournament tonight, feel free to move them where you want to.

Hello Vinkje-welcome to the Blast:)

Unfortunately only mods can edit-and even I (the one responsible for all the Mastoff's-shows how faulty my memory was) can't do a sort of auto-correct on it.

We depend on people such as yourself to point out errors.

I fixed all the Masthoff errors for 1971. If you see them in other years just do as you've done here and we'll correct them.

Thanks:)

P.S. It's good to know people are finding us via google.

Thanks, Rollo. I will pick this up as you suggest.
In 1971 there are still two Mastoff's left. Both are on page 1: one in post #5, one in post #6.
I will report in other years where and when I find them.
