She's just playing a couple of ITF's now to gain some confidence and matchrhytm in preparation of Indian Wells and Miami, after that she will play ITF Torhout because it's in Belgium and the tournament sponsor is also her biggest sponsor and they have a really good relationship. After that I'm sure she won't play too many ITF's.

Andiyan
Feb 15th, 2009, 02:15 PM
That is if she gets a good result this year.. if she doesn't do well somewhere, after Birmingham, her ranking will be gone and she can only get in the MD of ITFs..

But let's hope for her she can do well.

konijntje_00
Feb 15th, 2009, 05:56 PM
yeah, it's true she has the Birmingham-points to defend but we'll see what happens in the next couple of months.
Yanina changed a lot to her game after Australia with her new coach, so it's a good thing to practice those things in her game and that's the reason she stepped back to ITF's for now.

Hmm yeah well we'll see. i still think someone ranked top 80 shouldn't play a $25k, but anyway...Fair enough if she plays Torhout, and at least it's a $100k+H so that's OK anyway...but $25k's really....:o I know she needs some confidence but yeah we;ll see what happens.

I can't believe they didn't give her MD WC, as they did in Midland 75k where she reached the final:shrug:

Are you sure she asked for one? It is allowed to have maximum 3 main draw wild-cards per year, so maybe she wanted to save it for another tournament

Don't forget ITF and WTA are different though. ;) But yeah, it's possible she didn't want the WC here (if she was even offered one).

YEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS :D Go Soph :D

Wow, surprising - I left after she fell down a break in the second, and seemed out of gas.
Sophie was actually called for delaying the match in the first set (a call which was booed by the spectators). She's got a great looking game; awesome one-handed backhand.
One weakness, she needs to learn to yell out obscenities in a different language from that of the hosting country :fiery:

why was she called for delaying the match? she got booed :sobbing:

Wow coetzerfan1, can you give us some more reports on your day(s) at the venue? :D

Only had a few hours at two days - the Monday qualies and today.

Monday I caught Margalita Chakhnashvili beat Coco Vandeweighe. Coco hits big, but M. ran her into the ground in a very smart match.
Then I caught the Daniilidou match. She's a big gal, but wasn't hitting very hard (I read she was ill at the previous tournament). She had enough to win. What was really annoying was her coach sitting right next to the fence and giving coaching. I know, cheating goes on all the time, but you'd think the tournaments would go the extra step, ask the players to identify any coaches before the match and ensure they don't sit right on top of the court.
Today, I first saw Julie Coin have a "quick day at the office". Then I saw some of the Yanina match. She's got a great game, a fiery personality, and the language skills to confine her outbursts to non-English languages :)
Then the Sophie match. Her opponent was fit and a great competitor, and the rallies got great in the second set. As I said, I thought Sophie would run out of gas, so I wonder how she turned it around. Her opponent Lepchenko has weird form (I read she's coached by her father). She's got an extreme western forehand, and I swear, she hits the serve with the wrong side of the racket face (definitely no chance for pronation).
The most enjoyable part of these small tournaments - how the players react to the inevitable bad line calls. There are only two linesman and the umpire on the court, and they aren't exactly the top of their profession. Attendance is so sparse that I can usually pull up a chair and sit right along one of the baselines. Then I can see the missed calls, and how the players react. I shared a moment with Coin as her opponent got hooked on an out call. Coin watched the ball hit the baseline, heard it called out, shrugged, looked over at me, and we shared a quick smile. There's no hawk-eye at the challengers....:)

Brett.

Let me explain. Sophie wasn't booed, the umpire was for the delay call. Yes, she seems like a nice girl. After we booed the umpire she let out a cute "You messed up mate" :)

But who doesn't get a bit moody when they're being run into the ground. She didn't pull a "john mcenroe", but did yell out "what the f***k" once and a very prominent F***K another time. I was sitting near her traveling coach and we joked about how being Australian, she didn't have the luxury of a non-english language to vent with....
