I decided to start this thread, because it's only days away and I wanted to know when will the draw or the playing format or whatever be published??

I checked the fed cup homepage, but there isn't anything yet, only the two groups of Asia/Oceania...

that was an actualy tie, not zonal qualifying.

its too difficult for the networks to broadcast zonal qualies as the draw and OOP isn't made until a few days before, which means the networks wouldnt know when australia is playing and what not...

From the Tennis Australia website;

Optus Australian Fed Cup team captain David Taylor confirmed that Australian Open quarterfinalist Jelena Dokic and Samantha Stosur will spearhead the singles in Australia's first round-robin match against Korea in the Fed Cup Asia-Oceania Group I play-off.

World No.88 Casey Dellacqua and doubles world No.9 Rennae Stubbs will join forces in the doubles for the Korea tie.

Taylor said the main criteria for the decision was recent form but that the team line-up will most likely change during the week.

“Obviously the form of the last few weeks is the biggest factor and I just think that's a good match-up for the team involved,” said Taylor after the completion of the draw.

Dokic, Australia's No.2, will meet Korean No.2, likely to be Lee Jin-A, in the first match at the State Tennis Centre at 11.00 am on Wednesday. Stosur, Australia's No.1 is predicted to take on Korean No.1 Lee Ye-Ra. Final line-ups will not be confirmed until one hour before play forcing teams to speculate on who their opponents will be.

Final lineups not being confirmed until an hour before play sounds really weird to me. And Jela is still the Aus #3, just behind Dellacqua.

Golovinjured.
Feb 3rd, 2009, 09:27 AM
Lee Jin-A is a lefty, with a doublehanded backhand, and has never been in the TOP 300.
She won a $10K last year, and reached the SF and F at a few $25's last year, best win was probably over Gajdosova early last year.
Good way to get back into competition for Jelena, should be pretty routine. SHOULD BE.

Also, Thailand is in Australia's pool, and #41 Tanasugarn is playing.
In their last 2 meetings, Jelena has only won 6 games. But, that was in '04 and '08, so bring it on. :armed:

Taylor said he rested Dokic to give her a "mental day off" following her hectic schedule this summer.

"She was sick at the start of the week but that wasn't a factor today, it was more about giving here a bit of a rest," Taylor said.

"Even though she's won (her matches) pretty easily it's still emotional to play for your country when you haven't done it for a long time."

i didn't realise how far away Mildura is. went there once YEARS ago.
its about 6 hours my car from my place (in melb).
i wonder how much coverage its going to get, coz its so far away and its ANZAC day.

btw - the weather forecast said 'scattered showes' and 'wind and increasing rain'
and for sunday, one site says 'light rain late' and another says 'windy with showers'

...

good conditions eh.

Well done Jelena!:)

“Conditions were horrible,” Dokic said after the match. “It really got windy in my match and especially in the middle of the first set, it was just impossible to have a rally of [more than] two or three shots.”

“It was more a mental match and who was going to serve better [and] I think I did that well today. I served well when I needed to [and] I hung in there in the first set tiebreak.”

Jelena Dokic (71) and Rennae Stubbs (9 in doubles) were leading Switzerland’s Amra Sadikovic (507) and Mateja Kraljevic 6-3 1-4 in the final rubber before bad light stopped play.
