#1 Doubles Katrina Zheltova/Melissa Valenzuela Sac. St. def. Anne-Christine Voicu/Braverman Jillian Pep. 9-7
#2 Doubles Aileen Tsan/Luba Schifris Sac. St. lost to Alex Liles/Anamika Bhargava Pepperdine 8-1
#3 Doubles Joyce Martinez/Clarisse Baca Sac. St. def. Alexandria Walters/Zlatka Petrova Pep. 9-7

Wow it looks to me like Pepperdine, who beat them 7-0 last year, was too overconfident by not playing Anamika Bhargava and Anne Voicu in singles. :smash:
Because of this upset over Pepperdine, Sac. St.'s ranking will inflate and beating them will have more value. Sac. St. now becomes an very important match for my team UC Irvine.

How do you know Bhargava was healthy?

How do you know Voicu has cleared initial eligiblity yet?

You assume alot.

Sac St's win will only be good if Pepp rights the ship.

Ask LB and UCI last year.... both had nice Top 40 wins... only none of those Top 40 wins held rank and nearly all fell out of the final rankings... thus pulling both backward despite very good seasons.

You assume a lot, again

There's a small chance Bhargava won at #2 doubles but was then not healthy enough for singles, but unlikely.

Did you see Voicu playing #1 doubles before asking that stupid question?

I doubt Pepperdine will fold like last year's Arizona or San Diego St.

Or Purdue or Penn or Cal Poly or LMU or UCI (30's to 64)...

I'll give you the Voicu one... but why would they tank on purpose. Maybe they just have a whole bunch of the same? Or maybe Sac State is much better this year?

Sac St. only added a new #3 singles in Maria Meliuk ITF 124 in 1/09. The other 5 singles were on the team last year when Pepperdine won 7-0.

Last year = #6 singles Tania Rice def. Joyce Martinez 3-6,6-3,10-6.

This year = #6 singles Joyce Martinez def. Tania Rice 6-1,6-0.

Maybe Sac. St. just caught Pepperdine sleeping. But expect the 'Dine to be fully awake when it plays both Long Beach and Irvine later this year. :help:

Maybe the match is legit... Meliuk would play # 1 at any Big West school but Pacific (Widjaja) and maybe LB based on Grady's seniority. Meliuk higher rated as a junior that Grady. So if she's playing # 3 for Sac State... they are top 30 for sure.

UCI and LB are the same (at best) as last year... at best.

LB would have been better (a player deeper) but for that late unexpected departure. It's Cal Poly, UOP and then our two...

A year of transition?

It's too early to tell how good Meliuk is because Sac. St.'s #2 was Aileen Tsan who Claire Fermin defeated 2 years ago when UCI beat Sac. St.

It said on the Pepperdine website that Bhargava was injured playing doubles.

Washington St. will drop in the rankings. Maybe Long Beach St. will move 1 spot up unless of course Sac. St. jumps over them.

Predictions for the year

Cal might have best team in country
Fresno will hold it's own also as they got deeper at the bottom... but not Cal deep.
Watch for UW to move up rapidly into top 20...

UCLA is weaker... and even more so until Pantic finishes serving NCAA eligiblity penalty in March... probably a 5th or 6th place Pac team so they could easily fall out of Top 20. This is the pay back year for the NCAA giving them NINE scholie spots last year... thus giving them the National Champ title despite injury to Joelson

ASU depends on the very talented but oft injured Abdala's... plus they get to play USC and UCLA at home for the counting league matches on their 'slower than clay' courts which is a huge advantage

Pepperdine is a mystery but no way they hold top 30... might finally open door for St Marys or USF to win the WCC...

UNLV, NC State, Wazoo plus Bill & Mary all weaker ... lost top line players with no big additions so their ladders have had to slide up. Bill & Mary also had coaching change. Wazoo in the most trouble of that group given the results of this past weekend but they were massively over ranked last year anyway.

MHO on some of the Top 40's

Pac 10 prediction:
1 Cal
2 Stanford
3 USC
4 Arizona State
5-6 UW
6-5 UCLA
7-9 The others... all non NCAA qualifiers
10 Oregon State... cause they don't play

I think Virginia will definitely be in the top 25 by the end of the season. They have a deep team of highly motivated players. I'm excited to see how they do.

Virginia is definitely having some great results with this year's recruits: Lindsey Hardenbergh, Emily Fraser and Claire Bartlett. They are trying to add Karoline Steiro from Norway, but I'm not sure if she's cleared by NCAA yet.

gouci

Thank you Barboza for reporting about Steiro. I'm assuming if cleared she will begin play this season. With the addition of Steiro, who had a WTA ranking high of #499, Virginia may crack the top 15-20.

Looks like I was wrong about W&M falling off. They've reloaded and/or Texas is over ranked?

Hawaii improved or SDSU/UCI fallen off? That was a 6-1 match for everybody last year. Nice win by Hammell though... clearly playing better than in the summer/fall.

Tennisace
Feb 1st, 2009, 12:07 AM
I would say the advantage for W&M was the indoor surface. Texas is an outdoor team but they still shouldn't have lost. Texas has way more talent than W&M. This would have been a very different story outdoors.

What the heck happened to Fresno State and Denver defaulting matches?

Before you get all excited about the closeness of the UCLA 5-2 win over #41 Pepp

1) UCLA cleared the bench for this one. Dockendorf in for doubles (their # 9), AV Lind in for singles (# 8)... and both lost. :fiery:

2) Nice win by Braverman... but is Joelson hurting yet again? :help:

3) Factoring in above, and the fact LSU was headed to a possible 4-3 final before they stopped it a 4 pts, is this just a weaker UCLA team or is Pepp improving? :bounce:

Too early to tell but UCLA's jumbled line up certainly contributed.

Cause LB's match with FIU is almost certainly washed out and Saturday is not a make up option (likely rain but LB has another match)

Funny (sad) thing is watch UCI unjustifiably jump in polls... because the failed to post LOSS to SDSU for a week.

If SDSU is not ahead of UCI (who beat UCI but score did not get posted for 10 days), then the ITA coaches poll is a complete joke (ok, it is but this will prove it).

Tick tock.. start laughing Tuesday

LET US THAT TOOK A BAD LOSS (THAT SHOULD NOT HAVE HAPPENED) GIVES THANKS TO BAD SID'S :worship:THAT DON'T POST THEIR SCORES UNTIL MONDAY MORNING (AFTER RESULTS HAVE BEEN SENT TO THE 8 VOTERS IN POLL)

Two weeks ago, SD State (nor UCI) posted their match score while in Hawaii... so SD State never gets the love they deserved for beating # 64. Yes, it is in a week later but the 8 voters get totals and a run down of the 'current weeks' matches... so it went unnoticed... and they got no love this week either.

This week, UCI fails to post their win over #51 FIU until Monday morning... and gets NO LOVE for their win.

Muchas Gracias Eaters...

A lot of really exciting matches this week. I was following Georgia/Baylor and Duke/NW, and they both went all the way down to the wire. The tournament should be really fun this year; I already can't wait.

Cecil is doing a world of good for Duke. If Iyer were healthy, I think that they would be the favorites for the title in May, but without her, they're part of the larger group of contenders.

tucker I agree.
For the top 4 for ncaa, i'd def say Duke, Cal, Georgia, northwestern. 5-8 would be SC, baylor, stanford, notre dame. lower tier would be georgia tech, florida, ucla, clemson, miami, north carolina.
I stll put Cal as #1 just b/c they are west coast, and we always do well in the outdoors.

Florida is down, but they are very tough to beat at home. I think they've won something like 59 in a row at home and only ever lost 1 SEC match at home all time. However, I don't expect them to be a factor in postseason because they basically need to win the doubles point every time out just to have a chance. They are very good at the top of the lineup, but relying on 3 inconsistent freshmen at 3-5, while 6 is a complete waste and an automatic point for the opponent. Megan Alexander is done for the year and they're relying on a walk on at 6 who is, to be kind, not cut out for D1 tennis. I believe she's won 3 games in 5 matches. So, they start every match basically in a hole. As we saw on the road, where they lost to Kentucky and FSU(first time ever), they aren't the same team away from home.

The bigger question is why in the world do so many kids transfer out of the program? Thornqvist could've had more than 1 national title if he held on to kids. Heck, they would've been a contender this year with Cohen and Borsanyi. Boonstra has been the most pleasant surprise, probably nationally. She's been so good at the top of the lineup.

SD State ran out of luck... barely... loses 5-2 to UNLV without Bagshaw at # 2 (but she played doubles, weird) and then lost three 3 set singles matches. Ouch... UNLV will celebrate but they caught a huge break with Bagshaw not able to play and thus the ladder climbed.

Kids leaving all the time. Kids constantly injured. Kids from Florida avoid UF like the plague it seems(I realize they have 2 coming next year, but Thornqvist went 4 years before that without signing a player from Florida; Cohen is not from Florida and even if you count her, she still left). It's pathetic to watch this proud program rely on walk ons, who aren't even high school caliber, to fill out the roster so they don't default multiple matches each week.

USC really did themselves proud by beating Stanford and Cal last week. They hadn't beaten Stanford in 23 years!!!! lal w/o their #1 player to boot. its amazing. They'll put themselves in contention for the ncaa title if they can stay healthy and hungry and play as a team. the doubles team have been a huge improvement for SC this year
Cal still has the better team, but their top player is injured.
I'd put the top contenders as Northwestern, Georgia, Miami, USC, Cal. Then it's duke, georgia tech, notre dame, baylor, Stanford.
Northwestern plays Notre dame today. NW should win 5-2 or 4-3

Your list looks very reasonable other than I believe NW is very mortal when they play outdoors.

And I agree Cal is possibly deepest in country if/when Cossou slots back in. That's is a nasty (dare I say professional, ugh) 1-3.

Sanchez is not USC's top player despite RG's continually placing her there and ironically the team has taken off since she got hurt. She is 3 or 4 at best other than having a big fall. Her spring numbers not so much... but if she returns and slots mid line up then they really get good.

Ok, now we find out about the rankings and what the ITA has tweaked this year.

First, it is baloney that in April the 'committee of eight' are still doing 51-75... and Gouci has pointed out there are some dubious names in that list. Until this year, 51-75 were always computer from the first ranking on. Now I could understand one or two run throughs but we are at 4 and counting. Stop tweaking.

THE TEST

If Bill and Mary are still ranked this week... will the computer ONLY count wins as it appears or will it factor in BAD LOSSES like any other system would do..

Cal definitely needs Cossou in the singles line-up if they want to win an NCAA team title. Having Raveljoana and Chang at No. 5 and No. 6 is not going to cut it against the top teams. That's pretty much two points for the opposing team. The one plus that has come out of Cossou's injury is Andersson/Juricova stepping up at No. 1. Once Cossou gets her doubles form back, that will put Cal in a good position to win the doubles point against any team in the country.

You have to have some sympathy for Florida, who I believe has been hurt significantly by the fact that their No. 2 Megan Alexander has been out since the Indoors. Given the fact that Florida was only fielding six players (now eight with two walk-ons), they have to win at No. 1/2 doubles because No. 3 doubles is basically a walk-over. Furthermore, Florida's No. 5/6 has also been a gimme two points. Going into duals, Florida is pretty much down 0-3 (doubles point loss and No. 5/6 singles).

The last player to transfer out of Stanford was Story Tweedie Yates. She was granted an immediate transfer without having to sit out a year. Stanford is obviously a great school academically but I kind of believe that Clayton will leave. I would find it hard to imagine that she would continue at Stanford having to pay for it when a lot of top schools (both academically and tennis wise) would give her a full ride.

Of course the big question is where is she going to go? If she's heading there this fall, I would say Duke is a good answer (one of her initial interests and not currently full for the upcoming season).
