I guess everyone here is just hoping that Chakky will get past Anne. A tough draw indeed. She's playing on Day 1 and I'm sure we all don't want to see her crashing out just when all the Grand Slam fun is getting started. At her best, I know Chak is better than Anne but Chak is playing far from her best so I hope she keeps her focus and get to round 2! :D

Okay I never expect anything from doubles when Anna is involved - she doesn't really have any success there since she stopped playing with Vesnina. But getting drawn against Cara and Liezel is rough. Upset of the year if Anna and Alisa win that.

Anna should join the mixed doubles! That way if she loses early in singles and women's doubles she will still have a reason to stay in Melbourne. Who knows maybe she'd get a better draw in there. ;)

Harsh but possibly true. Except let's face it, she's never going to win that doubles match. Entering Mixed is a good idea.

Well done Anna, she got through it. Anne didn't play as well as she can and really should have made it more difficult for Anna in the third set (which I didn't see because I had to leave for work then).

I did see the end of Dokic's match today. She's certainly hitting a few aces and a lot of winners. Also making tons of errors, but then again so did Anna today.

hey there knock the dock team!! as mentioned chak is on night match tomorrow, they'll show the match here in star sports asia for sure but im not really sure i want to see it. i just can't stop thinking that there are only two likely endings in this story. a) either anna will lose a nail biting, error fest of a match that ends at 9-7 in the 3rd set b) or an inspired dokic will destroy anna in straight sets, getting a standing ovation from the crowd in the end.

this ending is the one i'm hoping for but i have no idea what are the chances of this happening:
c) the chak who attack the israeli crowd will show up and wins 6-2 in the third set, after winning the first set fairly easily and tanking the second set.

i don't think dokic will win easily if she does, she spraying far too many errors to win convincingly. if dokic does win it will be in 3 sets, but right now unless anna tightens up her game i can only see anna winning in 3 sets. if anna did go out and really played percentage tennis used angles and changed pace often i think chak could come away an easy straight sets winner, but sadly i haven't seen chak do this many times in the last year, even less times for a whole match.

i haven't seen anna play that kind of smart tennis since the summer hard court season of 2007...  i wish she had stayed playing that way. she'd never be able to outhit the big girls..the power game is not just for her..she has her own unique game which was really fun to watch but now she is just an unforced error machine..hopefully tomorrow she can tone down the unforced errors long enough to win the match..

Anyway, Anna doesn't mind playing the big hitters, or at least it used to be that way when she was a consistent enough counter-puncher to draw an error. Not sure how this one will turn out. I'm glad Jelena won a round but I want Anna to win this.

Good thing here IMO is that Anna was playing quite well most of the time :), ok some lapses here and there but not the horrorfilm what we´ve been used to last year. Looks like she is on her way to better tennis and maybe in the summer hardcourts we can all see the old Anna back ;)
What´s the latest news on her coaching?

I don't think Anna was playing well. Lets see Dokic against Wozniacki.
Anna has lost 2 of 3 matches this year.
9 of her last 12.
She doesn't serve well, not good near the net.
Doesn't play well in the clutch moments.
I'm not satisfied with this match. Dokic was choking badly in set 2.

penkku

Well maybe I wasn´t expressing myself clearly enough, when I said quite well, I meant that it was the best I had seen her play in let´s say 10 months time ;) didn´t see though the 1st set at all today and saw only from 2nd set when she was trailing 1-4.
Haven´t seen her being good at the net ever. Her serve was today a liability when it should have been a weapon, she needs to practice that ok.
My point here was that her groundstrokes were looking a lot better that in ages (not yet good as they were) and that is the thing which I think can bring her back, not her serves and net play ;)
I know her achievements this year, just seeing a light here though the tunnel is long :)

I agree with penkku, Anna is improving after a lot of horribles Matches in 2008; ok it's not the good old Anna but this is better than nothing; for sure she has to improve the serve and try to hit a more secure 2nd serve, all these DFs are a big handicap!

If its one positive we can take from this match, it's that Anna was fighting all the way. Last year, she had some matches (Kirilenko R3 AO) where she just decided to hit mindlessly without thinking or any fight.

That serve needs help though :(

Glad she won the first round, sad she lost the second. I really look forward to seeing more of the Anna that I watched in 2007 hardcourt season and hope to see it before the end of this year. 2008 was not a good year at all. Here is to hoping that 2009 is a turn around year for Anna!

Last yr Kirilenko was playing well at the AO. She gave a tough fight to Daniella her next match. Remember Daniella reached the semis . I guess last year Anna didnt commit 16 df against Kirilenko. She was beaten by a better player on that particular day.

But this year situation is just terrible :help::tape:

Anna :tears:

ES only showed the final set which I just watched. Anna's got to do something about her serve. It was always a weakness and it's losing her matches. 2 DFs at the end was not the way this should have finished. Too many UEs too but at least there were quite a few winners. Glad Anna was able to fight back and win the second set. There's some positives in this.

Gotta credit Dokic, I'm happy to see her back. She was one of my original faves.

It was a very dramatic match, with good chances for both girls. Anna's second serve is a bit too inconsistent.

But overall she was rallying better than the horror matches from last year, so I think this year will be better. Maybe not fantastic, but at least she could have a solid year playing like this, and maybe she can hit some form later in the year.

Sometimes Anna is so fiery :hearts:, I love it, but maybe she needs to be more calm when she plays. Calm and focused. At the moment she goes from being so fired up she can't see straight, to completely distraught.

I don't know if Anna can ever control her emotions in a normal level. It's just a Russian thing. They're all kinda nutty and we love them for it. It would be nice though if she can used all that fiery-ness to get herself pumped up to play better. It doesn't always need to have a negative effect on her game.

BTW, more on Anna's change of racket...Contrary to that news article that I posted here, from what I've seen in the pictures of her playing this year, it looks like her racket is the Wilson KBlade98 and not the KBlade Team (used by the Williams sisters). I really could not believe that news article when I first read it. It's just that there's no way Anna would use a racket with a head side of 104 sq. inches especially after using for so long the Fisher racket with a 98 head size. Very few pros use a racket with quite a large head size with the Williams sisters being part of that rare group. Anyways, I believe it's good that she's playing with Wilson again. She used to play with a Wilson stick when she was in the juniors so maybe it will help her game. :)

Anna isn't going to return to her 2007 form overnight. She lapsed badly last year and developed some bad habits. She didn't mentally collapse like she did at times last year. There's still some work to do, but at least she's going in the right direction.
Anna, my dear...your serve!!!!

Honestly I don't really believe Anna will ever come back to her 2007 form. Part of the reason why I think she struggled last year was because she was trying the change a core part of her game. She is trying to become more of a power player. The problem is her game in 2007 in particular her flat groundstrokes, is already high-risk as it is.

I haven't seen her play this year but I just think Anna is really determined to become more of an aggressive player. If ever we are going to see an improvement in her results, it will because she had somehow adapted to that kind of game.

I see your point. I think Anna had a choice either to keep her game as it was in 2007 and stay in the top ten, but never win a major or risk changing into a power game and try for the major. She decided to change her game, and so far the adjustment is taking a lot longer. Lucky for her she's still only 21.
Henin was able to win because she had near-flawless technique and speed. The last woman to win a major with Anna's 2007 type of game was Iva Majoli; I think those days are over.

Anna once said she didn't care which racquet she played with, it made no difference to her.

 Well good for her! At the end of the day, it is how well your game is that matters and not the equipment. :)

Dokic beat Wozniacki, so I guess Anna lost to 2 good players this year, Dokic and Navarro.
But she still has only won 3 matches in her last 8 tournaments, and her ranking will plummet if she doesn't start winning matches

Well Paris is the big one left on her ranking but unless she's a late entry I don't see her on the list this year.

What is Anna's ranking after Paris comes off?
Is she dropping outside the top 25?

Not necessarily. If she doesn't play Paris she loses 550 points and drops to 2096 points. That puts her provisionally at #24 but obviously doesn't take account of anyone below moving ahead of her.

I don't know if Anna can ever control her emotions in a normal level. It's just a Russian thing. They're all kinda nutty and we love them for it. It would be nice though if she can used all that fiery-ness to get herself pumped up to play better. It doesn't always need to have a negative effect on her game.

It doesn't seem to affect Masha S or Vera Zv. much. (error wise i mean).
Perhaps Anna should try the towel thingy that Vera does, it might destress her a bit and put the ducks back in a row. Cause at this stage she's too much pressure and too less pro.
You think she swapped with Wilson because of a psychological reason.... you don't just swap an equally good racquet, yea?

I'm not sure if it's psychological because even Marcos Baghdatis, another known player who uses Fischer had switched to another racquet brand. I've read in another forum that there are rumors that Fisher might be leaving the tennis business. It's just a rumour though. Who knows what is Anna's real reason is but my theory is that Wilson made a good offer and she took it.

And that hide-myself-with-towel thing that Vera does on changeovers is funny but I guess it helps her game since she seems to be doing much better now.

When calculating the rankings this year, will they use the points that Anna has earned before? Or will they use the new points given for this level of event? For example: Sharapova earned 1000pts last year after winning the AO, but this year's Grand Slam winner earn 2000pts. Will they subtract the 1000pts or the 2000pts from Sharapova's ranking?

Masha will lose 2000 points. The WTA brought last year's ranking points in line with this year by doubling each player's points at the beginning of this season. This essentially compensates for the changes but it's only an approximation because in most cases points for each tournament and round are not precisely double what they were last year. A Grand Slam win is one where the points are double last year's.

Thanks! :D Good thing you explained that they have doubled the player's points at the beginning of the season because I thought it would be unfair to take away double of the points of what you earned last year.

i seriously can not believe shes not on the entry list for paris indoors, its such a massive amount of points to not even try and defend. if she dosen't want the pressure of defending paris why not play pattaya so at least if she did ok there she wouldn't drop so many points.

Just my thoughts...Maybe she's trying to regroup and is configuring out what to do with her game and she doesn't want to play in Paris because it's an indoor event in the midst of the outdoor season. She wants to prepare better for the upcoming hardcourt big events (IW and Miami) which are all played outdoors.

She's about to lose the only good result she scored last year. With how she's been playing so far, chances of a return to the top ten are non-existent. I'm afraid she's following in Maria Kirilenko's footsteps: once a very promising player but now subsisting anonymously in the rankings somewhere around the thirties and forties.

Drawing Dokic in round 2 was bad luck.
Anna might rebound and have a good year.
