im really happy for sesil. last year was such a struggle playing qualies to get into qualifying of 25ks and really having to slug it out in the middle of nowhere. now shes started 2009 with 4 straight wins against players ranked above her, you cant ask for more than that.

should easily make top 100 this year, should be aim for top 50

Sesil :bounce:

I'm really happy she's making some progress on the main tour now, hopefully she can keep it up. Last year must have been so difficult for her, playing qualifying for ITF's and probably getting bashed off court (not least on this forum) for her ban. She fully deserves a second chance.

Her comeback has been mocked on this board. But to go from unranked to top 150 in 1 year is pretty remarkable. Better than Dokic!! This year could be very good for Sesil :yeah:

Jan 5th, 2009, 11:14 AM
Iveta  :o

BRISBANE, Australia (AFP) — She may still be only 19 but Bulgaria's Sesil Karatantcheva said she felt like a grandmother as she reached the second round of the Brisbane International Monday.
Karatantcheva's 1-6, 6-4, 6-2 win over Czech Iveta Benesova is her best result since returning to the tour in 2008 after serving a two-year ban for testing positive for the steroid Nandrolone.
The Bulgarian, now ranked 158 in the world, had to win through three rounds of qualifying just to make the main draw in Brisbane, but now finds herself playing Belarussian Olga Govortsova for a place in the quarter-finals.
The colourful Karatantcheva has never been shy of speaking her mind and she could barely contain her excitement after her win over Benesova.
She said every match she played was an enjoyable one, win or lose.
"Because I haven't played for two years everything now is a good result... every win is a good win and every loss is just 'I'm so happy about it because I'm playing tennis'," she said.
Karatantcheva, who beat Venus Williams on her way to the French Open quarter-finals as a 15-year-old, said she was relishing being back on the tour.
"You kind of realise what you have once you lose it," she said.
"I kind of took it for granted, you know the tournaments and everything, then once you stop travelling you have to face a reality that I can't do this any more -- I was lucky that I was so young."
She said she had learned from her mistakes, adding that time away from tennis had changed her for the better.
"It was just a good experience, you definitely learn a lot, you grow up and you kind of see a different world than tennis.
"It helped me.
"I'm kind of wild sometimes and say what I think, but there comes a period where you just kind of know what's right and what's not."
While she reached a career-high ranking of 35, Karatantcheva has never played many of the women now on the tour.
"As much as I feel like a rookie, I feel like a grandmother on tour -- you know, seeing all these 14- and 15-year-olds coming," she said.
"I remember when I was 14, 15 -- they probably think I'm slow and old.
"But I still have some time left."

sesil is just love, you speak your mind sesil!

Jan 5th, 2009, 09:41 PM
Iveta :o

Jan 5th, 2009, 10:10 PM
Iveta has the look but not the game.

Sesil has the looks and the game.

Sesil is still to me the future of what top tennis players under 5'6 should be with Justine gone.

Iveta is top 20 material when she's on.
She has a very good game. However, she is a major head case.
Sesil is 5'7 1/2.

Well under 5'8 then.

I love Iveta. I love that she goes out of her way to play the Feburary-March clay schedule.

But the girl's margin of error on her shots is absolutely awful.
When she's on. She can beat players in the top 20 who are a little off.

I've seen her beat Zvonareva and Pierce but she is rarely on and I hate to say this but like a Dokic, she refuses to do the things to get back to the top with her gamestyle (playing doubles).

I know Peschke is a good doubles player, maybe great but Benesova has good hands at net and should be a better doubles player as well.

Her schedule might be hurting her chances to have to consistent doubles partner.

You know how the players she beat got back or into the top 10? Doubles.
Pierce winning mixed at Wimbledon in 2005. And Zvonareva winning with Dechy at the US Open.
