Flavia is so flirtacious in the mixed.
She had Marat wrapped around her little finger out there, the powderpuff shots to her ALL MATCH! It was a good tie, though.

Look forward to your report, Andrew... and the Bolelli pics like everyone else. ;)

Dinara Safina vs Flavia Pennetta

Really disappointing from Flavia today. She had some many opportunities in both sets but couldn't take either of them. In the first set, with the help of Dinara's shots mainly going long, she established a 3-1 lead then went up 0-30. Safina then stepped into gear hitting a confidence boosting forehand winner. A funny moment of the match was when Flavia tried to challenge a serve but the system got stuck on the loading screen. However Flavia capitalized on Safina's patchy form, reaching a 5-3 lead before she lost 3 games straight handing Safina the first set. Like in the first set, Flavia took a 3-0 before a mega choke. Although Safina wasn't playing at her best she won 6 games straight to take the match. After the match in the on-court interview Safina told the interviewer about she idolled Marat as a youngster and tried to copy how he played. She then stated "However a girl shouldn't really play like him."

Marat Safin vs Simone Bolelli

Like expected when Safin was announced onto court there were thousands of cheers from his female fans. Marat serve was on fire today. Although he was being outplayed from the ground by Bolelli in the beginning there was no way Bolelli could break serve. However the Italian couldn't keep this up as Safin was way to consistent for the rest of the match, the serve outstanding. After the match Safin said in his oncourt interview the this is almost certainly his last season and explained that he got the black eye by getting into 'some trouble' in Moscow. I watched about half of this match as I spent time eating lunch, hunting for autographs and watching players train.

Safin/Safina vs Bolelli/Pennetta

Mixed doubles, like always, is entertaining tennis. Flavia is an amazing doubles player, she hits some fantastic volleys and is not afraid of the male player. She returned everything hit at her and kept Italy longer in the rallies. I hope Maria keeps playing with her as she's an outstanding doubles player. Marat hit some shocking volleys and no wonder he doesn't play doubles more often. Bolelli has a nice one-handed backhand volley while Dinara's four aces (thanks to Hawkeye) was a highlight of the match. Dinara and Flavia were defiantly leading their respective male partners around the court most likely because of their more doubles experience than their partner. Another great moment was when Marat decided to challenge a call with the umpire starting to announce it before Dinara was like "No, no, no we don't want to challenge." Safin was playing weak shots to Flavia all match so she made full advantage of them.

Dominika Cibulkova

She was in 'Autograph Island' today so I got her to sign my programme and giant ball. I didn't see her train but she had two sessions today, the first and the last of the day. She's such a small girl but seemed very nice.

Lleyton Hewitt

Who would have thought that so many people would turn up to watch his training session? The practice court stands were fullest all day when Lleyton trained with a hitting partner (which I don't know), Tony Roche and another man. He's looking ready and I hope he can do some damage tomorrow!

Sabine Lisicki

I got her autograph just before her training session which was after Hewitt. She started the session by skipping however I left before she got into hitting. Her dad walked past in the afternoon when I was watching Shaughnessy.

Meghann Shaughnessy

Holy shit she was hitting the ball hard! She mostly practiced her forehand which she was nailing back at her coach. Could someone please tell me what kind of injury she had as she looked fantastic in training today? She practiced her one-handed backhand volleys a lot and her serves looked good. She had a nice chat with Casey and Pratty, who was next on-court and at the end of her session, her coach gave me one of the balls she was hitting with. I also got her autograph and wished her luck for tomorrow.

Casey Dellacqua

Like Lleyton, as soon as 3pm was nearly a crowd of people flocked to the practise court to see the home-town hero. She didn't sign autographs before the session which left plenty of fans (including me) annoyed. She did plenty of warm-up laps of the court along with stretches mainly focussed on her shoulder. She striking the ball well and will so pumped for tomorrow.

Dominik Hrbaty

He walked past me on the way to pick up a newly stringed raquet so I got his autograph. I can't believe someone as unattractive as him has a wife/partner as attractive as he does!

Su Wei Hsieh

I arrived when she was getting interviewed and like Casey didn't sign autograph. Not happy Jan!

The (many) pictures will be uploaded either tomorrow morning or in two days time. I have a coaching clinic with one of the players tomorrow and I'll be going to the Australia vs Germany tie. I'm happy to answer any questions you may want to ask.

Casey Dellacqua vs Sabine Lisicki

This was the first time I've ever seen Sabine play and she didn't disappoint. The match started out with both girls hitting some impressive winners, in particular Casey's forehand down the line. However after Casey won the first set 6-4, she started making silly errors while Lisicki started hitting some amazing winners. Sabine wasn't afraid to come to the net and she hit some nice volley winners during the match. Sabine also has an amazing serve, firing down around 12 aces and using it well to contruct points. In a topsy-turvy match, Dellacqua took a convincing 5-3 lead but then was a massive choke. She started playing too defensivly as Sabine took her apart, as Casey made error after error. Casey looked rather flat today, while Sabine stayed confident the whole match, with her fighting efforts amazing in the last set. I liked what I saw of Sabine today, her groundstrokes are very strong and I believe she'll be a top player in the future. Casey is looking fit, however she didn't play badly but needs work on her second serve and cutting down the silly unforced errors. Oh Sabine reminded me of Ivanovic with those fitpumps after most points, it got really annoying after a while.

Lleyton Hewitt vs Nicholas Kiefer

The crowd were ready for Lleyton's comeback and so was he. This was a really entertaining match with some really tough rallies. However it was typical Lleyton stuff fighting back from a set down to keep his country alive. It was an encouraging win for Lleyton with his moment fantastic today. He chased down everything Kiefer threw at him today, many slides and splits. Although he made some stupid errors, it's really because he's been off for so long. Kiefer played a good match, he has an all-court game and has impressive groundstrokes off both wings. His vollies are also very good however Lleyton's fighting spirit and fitness really paid off in the second and third set. A few little side notes include Kiefer got a time abuse warning mid-way through the second set and entertained the crowd with his impressive soccer style juggling tennis balls with his feet. Both Lleyton and Nicholas should thrash Hrbaty while I think they will have to fight hard to win against Blake. I'm looking forward to watching both guys later this week.

Dellacqua/Hewitt vs Lisicki/Kiefer

Coming soon...

Lu

I had a hit with him at the State Tennis Centre this morning and it's amazing how smooth and clean the professionals hit the ball. A highlight of my hit with him was when I hit a stunning forehand cross-court passing shot. He was a really friendly guy and I got his autograph.

Safina

Dinara was training with her coach at the State Tennis Center at around 10am this morning. She was doing sprints, stretches then juggling tennis balls on her racket. She looks really fit and the black hair looks fantastic.

Simon

Gilles had a training session at the same time as Dinara at the State Tennis Centre and was doing drills involving a soccer ball for his warm up. A group of girls watched his warmup and my coach walked passed and said "Are you watching or perving?"

Cornet and Hsieh

The pair trained together on the practice court today with Su Wei hitting the ball better than her first match of the year against Cornet. Alize looks much fresher and was striking the ball well, easily beating Su Wei in most rallies. Could someone please tell me who Su Wei is always with, a chubby man and a young looking guy. Are they her brother and father? I got both girls' autographs, Hsieh's when she left the court and Cornet's after an interview.

Blake

James trained with Aussie junior, Matt Ebden. He was easily outhitting Ebden and his groundstrokes are looking very nice. Blake is a very popular player here in Perth and attracted many spectators to his training session.

Hrbarty and Safin

Dominik and Marat were training together this afternoon, the session mainly focusing on Safin's vollies which aren't very good at the moment. He was dropped tonnes of pretty simple vollies into the net while Hrbaty was putting lots of topspin onto the ball.

The reports on the matches will be up a bit later ;)

Hopefully all photos will be up soon :p

Sabine Lisicki vs Meghann Shaughnessy

Sabine started well, her forehand really dominated the first couple of games, especially that amazing down the line winner. However Meghann is a good player, she soon started targeting Sabine's backhand which really brought her back into the game. Meghann got back the service break then broke Lisicki for the set at 5-4. However the second set was really one to forget for Meghann. She really struggled with hitting backhands, particularly the short ball as Lisicki stormed back into the match. Meghann clearly had some troubles with her left knee as she couldn't do anything to stop Lisicki's amazing forehand and serve. Everyone thought Meghann was down and out, but she managed to make a comeback in the third set with her forehand going strong. But in the end, Sabine was too good, taking the last 3 games to win the match. In the on court interview Sabine said that top 30 was her goal, and I believe she will make it there, she is really impressive. It's good Meghann's back, she will get better with more match practice.

Nicholas Kiefer vs James Blake

A really good match overall which showcased some amazing shot making however it should have finished in two sets. It was a tight match which only had one break of serve! Kiefer is a good all-court player who served fantastic today. He hit something like 20 aces and they all came at the right time, in particular down a match point at 6-7 in the tiebreaker. He also hit a breathtaking drop shot on Blake's first match point at 4-5 in the second set, bringing the crowd to their feet. There were some amazing rallies with this match could have gone either way, but Blake produced the better tennis on the important points especially off the forehand. The crowd were definitely on Blake's side, as I've said before he is very popular here at the Hopman Cup.

Lisicki/Kiefer vs Shaughnessy/Blake

The American's started well, winning a tough deuce game on Lisicki's serve but the chemistry between the German pairing worked much better. They seemed to work more as a team, talking and handslapping after every point however the Americans didn't do the same. Lisicki hit some fantastic winners at the back of the court, while James Blake's half vollies are breath-taking. Meghann didn't impress me in doubles today, her vollies were crisp and she kept giving the German's easy put aways. The Germans just seem to keep winning and I hope they make the finals, I wanna see them play again!

Dinara Safina

When I arrived she had just finished her training session but I did get some photos of her as well as her autograph, which I had to sprint to get. This was the only autograph I got today, oh and Dinara's such a tall (and friendly) girl! Later in the day she was training however her name was not up on the training board twice?!

Casey Dellacqua

Casey was a no-show today, I was waiting for her to start her training session from 1-2 pm however she never turned up! Maybe she was tired from the late night the previous night or even a bit sore?

Dominik Hrbaty

Dominik was training with young Aussie, Matt Ebden who seems like a player's favourite hitting partner this week. He was striking the ball very nicely and not making any errors off both wings. Haven't seen the Slovaks play live or on TV this week, but they must be playing some fantastic tennis.

Su Wei Hsieh

She's a training machine this week! While most players have about one session a day, Su Wei is making the most of the court training to at least three times a day! I'm so pleased this hard work has paid off with a hard fought loss to Dinara tonight.

Meghann is a really good doubles player. She has a really good serve as well as some nice volleys. However, she's totally out of rythm and it must be difficult for her. It'll be even tougher if that bloody knee keeps bothering her.

I know Meghann's a good doubles player so I had high expectations for the American team in the mixed. But like I've said she failed to impress me, epesically with those terrible half lobs to the net player. I agree, she is out of rythm but the more match play she gets, the close she'll get back to her best.

Casey Dellacqua vs Meghann Shaughnessy

It was such a terrible match by both players especially Meghann who looked really troubled by her knee injury all match. Casey wasn't play well at all in the first set, she only had to get the ball into the court to win the ralley as Meghann was erratic of both wings. Casey should have served out the set at 5-1 but Casey being Casey found some way to make it harder than it needed to be. Meghann somehow took a lead in the second set to go up 4-2, but after her knee buckled underneath her attempting a serve which failed, bouncing on her side before Casey's, Meghann was down and out. The knee is obviously troubling her and was in pain the whole match, which was sad to watch. I'm very disappointed in Casey though, she shouldn't have dropped seven games to Shaughnessy and she still looks flat. She isn't going for her shots any more, and is holding back, playing too passively. Hopefully this win will give her a much needed confidence boost but she needs to step up a gear in Sydney, because at the moment there is no way she'll defend her points at the Aussie Open unless she gets a cakewalk draw. I reckon Meghann should skip the Aussie Open completely until her knee is 100% but a very brave effort today.

Lleyton Hewitt vs James Blake

After two tough matches for Lleyton, he didn't look 100% out there today and Blake took full advantage of this. It's hard to believe how James lost to Hrbaty as he put in a good performance out there today easily beating Lleyton. Blake's definitely improved his serve percentage and variation which has worked well this week. He's really confident from the baseline with both the forehand and the backhand very solid shots. At the net he has a special touch and he isn't afraid to hit a nice volley. At around 2 all in the first set (I can't remember the score exactly) Lleyton tried to challenge a shot but he already played it so they didn't let him. This set him right off as he argued with the umpire which totally threw him off his game. He then dropped something like 7 games straight as Blake was too good today, a fantastic moment was an amazing left-handed lob. He's skipping Sydney this year to have an extra week practice for the Aussie Open, I really hope he goes deep into the second week.

Mixed Doubles

The Super Tiebreaker curse as struck the Aussies again as the Americans had a hard fought win in the mixed. I will go through all the player's performances to make it easier. Casey played well at the baseline today but her volleys needed work on. She'd always push the volleys instead of hitting through the ball. To be fair on Casey, Lleyton wasn't doing too much at the net, he would just let her rally with Blake and not taking volleys. I thought Meghann would have struggled in doubles with the knee problems but she played well, her volleys were much better than against Germany and she kept nailing them at Lleyton. James helped Meghann tirelessly in the mixed, she obviously was missing her movement so Blake was everywhere from strong groundstrokes from the baseline to some impressive volleys. I left at 5-4 to the Americans in the second set, but was pleased to see the Aussies got back in it but the stupid super tiebreaker got them again. Shame to see Lleyton double-fault on match point, which pretty much sums up the Aussies Hopman Cup campaign.

Dominika Cibulkova vs Sabine Lisicki

Wow Dominika is one speedy girl on the court! From the three or four games I watched, Dominika was way too consistent for Sabine who was too erratic at times. Although Dominika hit few winners, there were some really fantastic rallies by both girls. I'm looking forward to watching a whole match of Dominika's tomorrow, and I hope she can play well against either Dinara, Alize or Flavia. Fantastic tournament by Sabine, she's gained many new fans and was unlucky not to make the final, the Kiefer incident was really sad. Dominika gonna be scary on clay, she's one to look out for in the future. Oh and for people wondering, I didn't see the Kiefer accident but someone sitting next to me told me the whole story. Really sad, I hope he recovers quickly.

Training Sessions

Only two sessions today, Hewitt trained with popular hitting partner this week, Matt Ebden before his match while Blake and Hrbaty hit up prior their countries woman's singles matches. No sign of any group B players today, they were probably at the State Tennis Center.

Hey guys, I just got back from the Hopman Cup today...and cbf starting a whole new thread for my reports so I guess I'll just give a quick report of my own. (Sorry Droolv ;) )

Dellacqua vs. Shaughnessy

Oh God, this was a terrible match. Casey should have won 6-1, 6-1 or something. Meg was firing errors everywhere, and Casey was good enough to put the ball in the court and wait for the error but she was really stupid sometimes and went for a lot for no reason. Meg played better in the second set but still not good enough to overcome Casey in a error filled match.

Cibulkova vs. Lisicki

This was a high quality match! Both girls were intense and played pretty well. Lisicki got a lead at 5-3, but Cibulkova fought back to take it in a tiebreak. Great stuff from both girls, Cibulkova was running everywhere forcing Sabine into errors but Sabine still played really well. Eventually it became too much for Sabine who folded in two tough sets.

Hewitt vs Blake

Pretty low quality match. Hewitt was well below average and hit a lot of bad errors. Blake played okay, his backhand impressed me today. Don't remember too much tbh, went really fast.

Dellacqua/Hewitt vs Shaughnessy/Blake

Shaughnessy was clearly the weakest link. Only watched the first set, but from the looks of it Blake was the only player on his game and rescued the US team single handedly.

Hsieh vs Pennetta

Omg I felt so sorry for Su-Wei, me and my brother were the only ones cheering her on! she got to lead 5-4 but then the silly errors creeped in and she lost the set 7-5. The second set, Flavia looked like she was about to steamroll. She clearly looked the more fluent player. Su-Wei was dumping stupid drop shots everywhere and probably had 2% success rate. Luckily she regrouped and was about to level 4-4 but once again stupidly gave it up with errors and lost the set 6-3.

Safin vs Simon

A nice match with hard hitting and special shots. Safin's serve is HUGE. Simon was really lucky to stay in a lot of points. Pretty high quality overall. Simon out maneuvered Safin and won.

Safin/Safina vs Simon/Cornet

The French were off to a fast start, and Cornet was playing very well, she matched Safin on the baseline. However the Russians were quick to recover and Safin really pushed the accelerator to win.

Other notes

I saw a couple of people roaming the grounds. Among them were John Blom (Umpire, lol), Paul McNamee, Dinara Safina's couch, Lu from TPE And Cibulkova (she was like, 3cm away from me, texting on her phone.) I also saw Bolleli and Flavia's couch watching Flavia play, they were very near me. It also hit me how tall Su-Wei is. I didnt think she was tall before. Oh and Flavia kept on talking to herself obsessively lol.

The whole match changed in the second set. Blake made some incredible mistakes while Meghann was quite intelligent playing some smart shots to Lleyton while he was at the net as well as some nice volleys.

Hewitt was like 'sleepy' though. Does anyone know what was wrong with him?
