Pity about yesterdays loss, especially after getting that lead in 2nd set :(

But sounds like Kleybanova played really well :(

Still it wasn't a bad week with that Safina win :)

Aravanecaravan
Aug 21st, 2009, 01:01 PM
No, it wasn't a bad week. Cornet and Safina are quality wins. I think this will give her a new "CHR" next week, of ...35? Still, IMO she should beat a player like Kleybanova at this point, so it is frustrating. I think she's 0-3 against her this year on hardcourt yet beat Alisa on clay.

I knew that Aravane would have a tough time of it in this match because Kleybanova's serve stats have been good, but I still think it was an opportunity wasted.

Plus I wanted to see her on TV..... :(

I hope she gets a good draw at the USO, so she can do some damage.

I read an interesting interview with Aravane on the internet that mentioned that her best friend on tour was Pavlyuchenkova. That would go a long way in explaining that bizarre loss in Miami this year, being up 3MPs at 40-0 and then eventually losing. I wonder if it was hard for her, mentally, to be in that situation against a close friend.

It's still a good week with a victory over number 1 player.Pity Aravane won't be seeded at uso though :sobbing:

Aravane vs. Lisicki in R1 at the US Open....

Hmm. Could be tough, could be tougher. IMHO. Which Lisicki will show up, that is the question. If Sabine is serving big and holding with ease, I think it could be a short US Open for Aravane. OTOH, her return game should create at least a few problems for the big but movement-challenged German, and if Aravane can get into the points on Lisicki's serve, I think she'll have some break opportunities. I just hope she can serve reasonably well. A higher percentage of 1st serves would be nice. And please eliminate those doubles!

Allez, Aravane! :inlove: Make some noise here!

I believe that one of the articles posted by Bероника in the news thread said she's going to play a couple tournaments in China and Japan. Also, she will be able to play in Bali this year, having won at Strasbourg.

Bероника
Sep 18th, 2009, 11:15 AM
oh how does that Bali thing work? Is she playing there for sure? I thought it would be a boring event but the presence of Aravane there changes my perception completely! lol

Aravanecaravan
Sep 18th, 2009, 07:17 PM
Well, it is my understanding that, like the YEC, it is a champions tournament for all tournament winners other than the 8 who make it to Doha. Basically the top 8 in points go to Doha and the other players who won WTA events go to Bali. I would think it would have to be mandatory otherwise they might have a tourney where nobody shows up. Maybe that isn't right, but last year when they announced this tourney I thought that was how it was supposed to work.

Oh well, congrats to Marion.

Interestingly, Aravane had a number of chances in the first set to go up a break, jumping out to leads in two or three of Marion's service games while holding her own serve. She was actually playing a better first set until getting broken in the 9th game. Then it was all downhill from there.

Aravane has had to play a lot of tennis just to get into main draws the past two weeks. It's not an excuse, but it certainly can't be helping to play this many matches on top of each other. I hope she starts playing up to her ability soon. She has a SF to defend at the beginning of the year.

Great win Aravane !
I'm extremely pleased by the way she won her service games! She saved so many BP. What's more she didn't chocke a la française !

Now, she needs rest.
She will play tomorrow against Czink who is good player too.
Now let's wonder, how can she qualifies, since there are only 2 matches left in the group:

If Aravane def. Czink in 2 or 3 sets, she is qualified (W/L : 2/0), no matter the result of Lisicki/Czink.

If Czink def Aravane in 2,

_____- Lisicki def Czink in 2 :
Lisicki (W/L : 1/1; sets :3/2)
Rezaď (W/L : 1/1 ; sets : 2/3)
Czink (W/L: 1/1; sets : 2/2)

______-Lisicki def Czink in 3 :
Czink (W/L: 1/1; sets : 3/2
Lisicki (W/L : 1/1; sets :3/3)
Rezaď (W/L : 1/1 ; sets : 2/3)

______- Czink def Lisicki in 2 or 3, Czink is qualified (W/L 2/0)

If Czink def Aravane in 3,

_____- Lisicki def Czink in 2 :
Lisicki (W/L : 1/1; sets 3/2)
Rezaď (W/L : 1/1 ; sets 3/3)
Czink (W/L : 1/1 ; sets 2/3)

_____- Lisicki def Czink in 3
Lisicki (W/L : 1/1, sets 3/3
Rezaď (W/L : 1/1 ; sets 3/3)
Czink (W/L : 1/1 ; sets 3/3
--> It will depend on the number of games won/lost.

_____- Czink def Lisicki in 2 or 3 , Czink is qualified (W/L 2/0)

Therefore, Aravane has to win her match to qualify. Otherwise, the only chance to go through, is to lose in 3 against Czink and that Lisicki win in 3 against Czink, and to have a getter game ratio.

Very confusing, the rules for this event. Someone mentioned in another thread that they will re-seed the 4 surviving players for the SF, based on rankings. Don't quote me on that, I'm just repeating what I heard.

Does anyone know how many points are up for grabs in this tourney, and how many Aravane has won by getting to the SF?
Strastib mentioned in GM that she's got "250 in the pocket", which, according to my guesswork, would bump her up to around the low 30's and a possibly a new CHR.

Aravane will play Martinz Sanchez in the SF.

She's a tricky player who like's to serve and volley, but hopefully Aravane can pull off the win and make the final :)

Ok Martinez Sanchez is good player. But Aravane at her best should win this :)

Good luck to her...lets go win this thing and end they year on a high :yeah:

I hope you're right. Aravane can be so up and down. From the interviews, she seems to like Bali and the court itself--the lack of doubles lines is interesting, and I got to thinking about this the other day. It may actually help her focus. She is a hitter, a rhythm or "zone" player, and with just the one line to worry about, she can focus on that and it becomes like target practice. It's just a theory. At any rate, she seems to be playing well, so hopefully she can continue moving forward in the tournament. Closing the season out with a win would be fantastic.

Aravane wins! She was amazing! She smacked winners from everywhere, including a ripping one at 0-30 to give her 3 MPs and then a blistering backhander to win it. She was awesome! Never dropped serve. Totally dominant! A perfect match! One more performance like that please! Take this title, Aravane! I hope both finalists play well!

Allleeezzzzz!

Just wonderful!!

I must confess I didn't really hope anything right before the tournament as regards Aravane's few past performances.
Therefore unexpected as it is, I'm so Happy !! So many points won, an opportunity to win a great title.
Though, I couldn't see the match since I was at work, so I don't know if you guys could see the match, (I hope so ;)) And if anyone has recorded the match, I would be so grateful if he could upload it (or some highlights, whatever!)

Now Aravane is so confident, I'm glad she meet another French girl, they really can't stand each other, this will be funny to watch!

Come on Aravane, let's the deam continue ! :D

So happy for her! She fought hard and came back in the match and deserved the title! I feel terrible for Marion, and I hope she will recover soon, but I am just ecstatic for Aravane. Now she knows she isn't a one-hit wonder and that Strasbourg wasn't a fluke. She will gain so much confidence and belief in herself from this week. She can do great things next year, for sure!

what suprised me is how she's completely changed the way she hits the ball, before it was a lot flatter with a lot less margin for error, now she's hitting these really heavy topspin forehands! She clearly has done a LOT of work on her game.

Ok obviously its a pity it ended due an an injury, but the most important thing is Aravane wins a title!! :clap2:

This should give her so much confidence going into 2010 hopefully :)

yes you re right, the fact she managed to win strasbourg on clay showed her that she can play a different tennis, a tennis with less risk and more acuracy. She can put spin and that's good for her. I hope she can keep improving in her game and make an even better run at roland garros next year;)
