1943

At the height of the Second World War a thick haze of inactivity settles over the tennis world. Even in the United States many events are either cut-back or cancelled altogether. As late as March it was unclear if the US Nationals at Forest Hills would be held. Many thought that tennis during a World War was frivolous. Rubber was a much needed war material, should rubber balls be manufactured at all? In the end the USTA slooged on, making the US Championships the lone slam not interrupted by war.

Other events are less fortunate. The US clay event is thrown together at the last minute, and others are cancelled, including the prestiguous Seabright event on the summer grass circuit.

Exhibitions for the war effort all all the rage. Pauline Betz recalls playing on aircraft carrier decks and on makeshift dirt courts to entertain the men in uniform. Often the gals would go to several camps in one day. At one stop Betz and traveling partner Dodo Bundy arrived after dark, making tennis impossible, or so they thought. The men were so eager to see them that two jeeps turned on their lights and voila-night tennis!

MX: Pauline Betz/Al Stitt d Connie Clifton/Harrison Rowbotham 6-2 1-6 6-3

Pauline runs the table with all 3 titles as expected, but the big story of the week is Hazel Wightman, who earns her 34th US National title at an advanced age. Betz had trouble in the semis with the strong forehand of Lillian Lopaus, US junior girls champ. Lillian has 2 set points in the first set and wins the second. "The youthful titleholder sealed her own doom with two ignominous double faults".

Helen Wills Moody Roark has her right hand operated on after she tries to stop a dog fight between her German shephard and another dog. Several bones in her right hand are broken. She wrote of the incident: "Actually I was trying to save a little cross-wire terrier, who came running out of a house and attacked my police dog, who, ordinarily pays no attention to small dogs. I was bitten on both hands, but the finger was almost severed, and the bone broken, between the second and third joints. ...The miracle is that I have a finger at all, so I must not be too sad."

Wills has retired from singles in 1938, but continued to enter mixed doubles events and toy with a return to singles. This accident ends all competition for the woman who holds the record for the most "Big 3" (French, Wimbledon, and US) singles slams.

Pauline Betz performs an amazing feat in winning a Golden set (24 straight points) from Catherine Wolf in the finals-the first since Hazel Wightman in the 1910s. Not even Suzanne Lenglen or Helen Wills even won a Golden set despite regularly walloping opponents 6-0 in sets. "So spectacular was the champions play that Miss Wolf, by her own admission, never got to hit a ball in that first set." Pauline went for winner after after winner, by no means playing safely. It was estimated Betz hit 18 winners-the other 6 points coming on Wolf's errors. "Pauline, obviously, made no errors, and there was not even a doubtful line call."

4th seed Mary Nolan upset in the quarters as she tired--Mary works in a war plant at night.

Rye marks the start of this year's abbreviated Eastern grass court season. There were shocks and thrills galore as #3 Osborne beats Betz and the near invincible team of Brough/Osborne falls to Betz/Hart. The event lost about $2,000 in putting on the event.

Notes: Attendence was good for a war-time event, 10,000 showing up on each of the last 3 days. In the first round 3 women served as lines judges "Indicating a shortage of manpower". On a field court a long battle took place between Waite and Clifton. After 50 games Waite won at 6-0 12-14 10-8 after 3hrs 15 minutes. Waite let a 5-2 lead in the 3rd slip away and saved a match point before closing out the marathon.

Despite having more "name" entries than the men, the women's quarters were given short shrift on day 3, only one women's match was put on the grandstand and none on center. On the grandstand junior Doris Hart swept by Sarah Palfrey (now married again as Cooke), who was just starting her comeback. Two close qf matches were on field courts next to each other. As word spread that the favorites were in trouble the passage between them was jammed. Brough barely escaped elimaination, her good freind and doubles partner Osbourne did not. Both went to the wire at 7-5 in the final set.

In the semis the spirited fight of "little" Dodo Bundy brought many supporters out. Dodo "Camped out at the net" in set 2 and got to 5-2. At 5-3 Dodo had 3 set points, but by playing safe she allowed Brough to regain confidence. Bundy was never the same and went out at 6-4 7-5

The Betz-Hart semi was the match of the Nationals. At 7-7 Betz survived a 10 minute game on serve. To add to the excitement both girls slipped on the turf, Betz twice. . She was 'visibly shaken" by the second fall. Hart was then broken after a game of 2 deuces. Doris came within an inch of the first set and "almost blasted the champion off the court in the second". Her volleys and drives lost none of their sting as Betz flagged.

After the intermission Hart was out of contention as Betz won by 9-7 2-6 6-1. Hart's blistering returns, which earlier had found the lines, were now missing by inches.

Errors decided the final. Betz had two match points on serve at 5-4 and missed both on mistakes. In the last set Brough committed "numerous errors including foot faults and double faults and misses of easy overhead kills and in short order Miss betz won 5 games in a row." It was soon over at 6-3. Betz had been challenged in winning her 2nd US National in a row.

The inaugural event was earlier in the year. This 2nd meeting in October becomes the standard time of year. The Pan American in effect becomes the championship of Latin America, a prestiguous tournament. Osborne captures no titles but plenty of hearts-he rbeautiful volleying was not enough in singles or doubles, where a tiring Brough drags down their team in the doubles final. Pauline and Dodo lob rough to death down the stretch. Louise had trouble all week with the high altitude of Mexico City.

In the mixed final Margaret got the ovatiion of the tournament: 3 times Pancho Segura sent bullet forehands at her-3 times she blocked back a volley, the last landing for a winner between Pancho and Pauline.

Capacity crowd of 5,000 on hand for the finals.

Was this a one-off special tournament? I find it unusual that a tennis tournament would be played in Europe, even in neutral Sweden, with a war raging across the continent. How would Magda Rurac have got to Bastad from, say, Bucharest, and back again? Romania was on the side of the Nazis until August 1944.

Hi Mark,

This is one era where I think we can safely say we are 90% in the dark when it comes to tennis outside of the US.

Tennis did go on however. The French managed to hold an event at Roland Garros every year-even in 1944 and 1945. Ditto for Romania, where Madga Rurac was the champion from 1939 through 1946. (By the way, her maiden name was Berescu. She must have been married c 1940 or 1941, as she won the Romanian nationals in 1939 and 40 under her maiden name). I've read small accounts of German teams that visited Italy as late as 1942.

Regarding the war itself, much of the continent was remarkably war free at this time. After the Germans overran Western Europe in the spring of 1940 action was not seen again until June of 1944. Even in 1943 the war in the eastern front was still deep in the Soviet Union.

Transportation from Bucharest to Germany or Denmark wouldn't have been affected by the war until Allied bombing made things bad. Madga probably would have been able to take the train to say, Copenhagen and then cross by ferry over into western Sweden.

Transportation from Bucharest to Germany or Denmark wouldn't have been affected by the war until Allied bombing made things bad. Madga probably would have been able to take the train to say, Copenhagen and then cross by ferry over into western Sweden.

Hi, Bill,

It sounds a bit like a wikipedia story to me (especially with the golden boomerang added as a prize!), but it might be true. I haven't included it in the biographical piece I wrote on Magda Rurac because I can't verify it.

Added an entry for early July. Magda Rurac d Hilde Sperling 1-6 6-4 6-3 at Bastad.

There was a big international event in Bastad ending on Aug 1. Perhaps the above women match took place then.
In the men's final Jozsef Asboth (Hungarian champion, winner of the French Championships in 1947) beat Gottfried von Cramm (the famous German player, French champion in 1934 and 1936).

Large international events and international team competitions replacing Davis Cup were played in Central Europe in the first years of WWII, but they are poorly documented in English tennis history books.

Hi, Bill,

I posted it a few days ago in the "Blast from the Past" forum along with several other pieces, on Cilly Aussem, Lily de Alvarez, Dorothy Round, Maureen Connolly, Kathleen McKane and Anita Lizana as well as a piece on the early winners of the Ladies' Championships of Germany.

The Irish Championships were held during the Second World War, except in 1944 and 1945. I think the correct dates for the 1943 tournament are 5-10 July.

All of the winners and runners-up were Irish. Here are the relevant final results for 1943:

Ladies' singles
Betty Lombard d. Mary Nichols 6-1, 6-0

Ladies’ doubles
Betty Lombard/Olive Poole d. Pam Egan/Sally Lister 1-6, 6-1, 6-2

Mixed doubles
Eustace Fannin/Betty Lombard d. Cyril Kemp/Barbara Good 9-7, 6-4

So, this event was played on grass before 1943?
