We leave the hard court season behind, following an exciting US Open which saw Maria Sharapova claim her first Grand Slam, as well as Ana Ivanovic taking over the #1 spot. However, she will have a tough time staying there as she defends here this week. Tokyo kicks off the indoor season, and with only a few events left of the season, every match becomes crucial for those aiming for the YEC!

Sharapova poses with the US Open trophy she won over the fortnight
Tokyo, Japan - Maria Sharapova was a former top 10 player back in the first season of the OWTT but has since been in a slump and battling a shoulder injury. The last fortnight, this all changed. Maria Sharapova played in the US Open and wasn't even considered to be one of the favourites to win the title but has defeated 3 seeds en route to her third title overall, second title this season and her fist grandslam ever. With this win, Sharapova moves up the ranking to number 6 and jumped up to number 3 in the race. In all her five matches she has won the first set by 6-0 before losing the second and fighting her way to the next round in the third set. Sharapova had the tough challenge of playing Jill Craybas in the first match and won that 6-0 3-6 7-5, saving 2 match points in the third set. She had to play another home crowd favourite, Lindsay Davenport. She won that match 6-0 2-6 7-5 and was 5 times, 2 points away from losing the match. The Quarterfinal showed Maria regaining her composure against Daniela Hantuchova in a 6-0 2-6 6-0 win after a bad second set performance. The semifinals was against world number 1, home crowd favourite and defending champion, Serena Williams. She won it 6-0 0-6 7-5 and a let cord at 5-4, 40-0 helped Maria save 1 of 6 match points. Sharapova finished up the fortnight by defeating Serbian shock, Jelena Jankovic 6-0 0-6 6-4 to regain her form and game back to the way they were in early season 1. Maria Sharapova is playing in Tokyo this week and has to play US Open finalist, Jelena Jankovic in the first round.

Sharapova celebrates her win over Jankovic in the US Open final
Interview with Maria Sharapova
Congratulations Maria, on winning your first and hopefully many grandslam titles.
Thank you, and I hope I can win many more. *laughter*
You played a good week, but what has happened in the second set?
I don't know, mental lapses I guess. It's weird. I played my best tennis in the first and third sets but you know, I'm happy to get through all the matches.
In 2 matches, you were match points down, how did you keep your composure?
I guess I was just playing my best and I didn't care whether it was championship point, natch points or just a regular point. Every point I try to do my best. I thought I was gone in that third set against Serena Williams. So luck was definitely involved in that, but you know. I was so happy and I apologized at the end of the match.
Now, you are likely to qualify for the Year Ending Championship, it will be your first. What are your thoughts?
Feels great, winning a grandslam, playing my first Year Ending Championships, you know it's great. It's a great 2 weeks for me.
Was winning a grandslam ever a priority for you?
Yes, it was a goal I had in mind, but you know there are a lot of great girls on the tour and it was going to be hard. But it finally felt good when I got one of those goals out of the way.
What other goals do you have in mind?
After winning a grandslam, it's definitely to crack the top 5, top 3 become world number 1. You know it's a hard task but if I can play like this, I think I can do anything. Winning a YEC would also be good.
You're playing against Jankovic again, do you think that now that you know her game, you can win easier?
Well, I'm not sure about that. Because she knows my game too and I think she will see my weaknesses easier than I see hers. She's a great player with great abilities. It will be another tough match, but it would be great to follow up a grandslam win.
Good luck Maria
Thanks

Great match here between these two Slam Champions. Shame the result had to come down to CT order, but it was Sharapova who had the luck today, and she follows her US Open win with a title run here in Tokyo, which sees her rise to #3 in the rakings - well done!! Great week for Malek as well :D
