Q. What kind of goals do you set for yourself during this comeback? Are you just -- do you think okay, I am going to get back to No. 1? Are you just thinking let me win a tournament, win a Grand Slam --
LINDSAY DAVENPORT: It's funny, I think probably my main goal as it stands is to try and qualify for the end of the year WTA Championships, top 16 to make it. It is going to be really tough to just start in July and try and qualify for that and it's in L.A. this year, obviously my hometown, and it would mean a lot to me for me to be able to play there. So that's something that I would really like to qualify for.
Lindsay has stated in her press conferences this week that she main goal of the year is to try to qualify for the WTA Championships - so I thought we'd do watch her progress here.
Top 16 players qualify for the WTA Championships, this year to be held in LA.
As of 14 October, No 15 position is held by Lindsay *yay*
Also here's the breakdown of her points:
Race to WTA Championships
19/July/02 No 100+ 154 points added 156
26/July/02 No 73 - 145 points added 299
12/Aug/02 No 53 - 194 points added 493
26/Aug/02 No 36 - 225 points added 718
07/Sep/02 No 19 - 398 points added 1116
22/Sep/02 No 16 - 0 points added 1116
07/Oct/02 No 16 - 232 points added 1348
14/Oct/02 No 15 - 73 points added 1421

if she reaches SF at Us Open and she reaches some finals in indoor-season she should qualify.i really think she'll be in top 16 before than Master.btw...they cant give a WC to Lindsay for playing it?
Aug 25th, 2002, 11:31 AM
I think the 16th place can either go to the #16 player or it can be used as a wildcard. SO wta would be stupid not to give her a wild card if she didnt qualify automatically. I mean given her form since shes been back - shes obviously still tonnes better than others and deserves it.
But what i think she was tryign to say is the goal she has set herself is to qualify automatically :D and well hopefully she will :D
:bounce: :bounce: GO LINDSAY :bounce: :bounce:

well what they've done in previous years if a player is injured when it's WTA Championship time they go to the next ranked player aka #17 in line for the Championships.
I'm trying to remember the last time we've had a situation like this when a player was in the top 10 but due to injury so far down the ranks - because from what I remember no wildcard has been given in the past to those players - since there can be a disadvantage for those who might have actually played a lot of tournaments and felt they earnt their right (a prime eg was Tommy Haas last year with the ATP Masters in Sydney and because Ivanisevic won Wimbledon he got the last spot even though Haas was higher ranked and deserved his spot).
The people who have qualifed for the WTA Championships at this moment are Jennifer Capriati and Serena Williams because they've won grand slams.... now if Lindsay could pull off the biggest miracle and win the US Open she would have secured her spot straight away <g>
Aug 27th, 2002, 01:34 PM
I hope Lindsay can qualify autamatically. If she reaches the US Open semis and then does reasonably well afterwards, and stays injury free, I think there is a possibility she could do it. If not I hope she can have a wild card. Like you say it would be daft not to give her one given her great comeback etc.
I shall watch with interest!

Lindsay will definitely be there!:)

updated to include all of US Open.

Will she really be there, already! Hope so.
I know she has had a superb comeback
Sep 22nd, 2002, 03:41 AM
due to not playing she slipped one place in the race.
Sep 23rd, 2002, 01:10 PM
Blow! I did hear she might play the Kremlin Cup, Anybody know if this is so?
Can't wait for her to play again
Sep 25th, 2002, 02:12 PM
I don't think the question now is whether she'll qualify, I think the question is whether she'll be able to remain a top ten player by the year's end. Clijsters, Hingis, Dokic, Hantuchova and Davenport all want to be in there, but one of them can't make it. It'll be close.
Oct 2nd, 2002, 01:00 PM
I think Linds will stay in the Top Ten. Not too sure about Martina and even Kim to a point.
Oct 2nd, 2002, 01:08 PM
Lindsay is slowly climbing back up to the top 3 position i believe.... she'll definitely make it to the top 5 by this year.... and btw... she'll definitely qualify for the porsche race championships.... she has a good chance of reaching the final in the kremlin cup in moscow.... who knows she can beat venus in the final this time.... we'll wait!
Oct 3rd, 2002, 12:37 PM
what people have to remember is the official ranking doesn't count when it comes to WTA Race to Championships. You may be ranked in the top 10 but unless you have those points to your name you can still miss out. Technically only 2 people have qualified so far for the Championships they being Jennifer Capriati and Serena Williams for winning their respective Grand Slams, then you go down the list - at the moment the last 3 positions are still very wide open.
As of this minute it looks like Lindsay has leapfrogged two players and is now in 18th position :) When I get confirmation I'll update the first entry of this thread.
Oct 3rd, 2002, 01:44 PM
Thanks gossipcom. With Lindsay winning today and Venus losing I would say Lindsay can get to the final and probably play Amelie. Linds will have to watch out for Dementieva if she beats Bovina. She has a things about girls called Elena! Lol!
Well done today Lindsay
Oct 3rd, 2002, 02:11 PM
well Bovina came through which means yet another meeting between Lindsay and Elena - their 3rd this year so far? Let's hope for Lindsay's sake she can beat her in a better fashion than her last encounters :(
Oct 4th, 2002, 01:44 PM
Agreed re Bovina! I think Bovina will prove problematic for Linds at first but I think her experience and class will win out in the end.
Oct 4th, 2002, 03:50 PM
ugh not a good start to that trying to beat her scenario - worst situation being Lindsay loses today she'd still be around the no 18 position since there's really only 3 people below her who could jump her they being Bovina, Coetzer and Maleeva.
If she won, her chances would definitely increase due to some losses by Sugiyama and Dementieva this week.
Oct 4th, 2002, 05:11 PM
I'm sure she will beat Elena (both of them) besides it's Lindsay's best durface and Elena doesn't play her best in this one. Lindsay will beat her in straight sets, hopefully!!
Oct 4th, 2002, 05:22 PM
Lindsay scraped through barely in the end 3/6 6/3 6/3 (she has to improve her game overall because it was way too scratchy)
Good news is she'll jump up a place today :)
Oct 7th, 2002, 07:49 AM
okay even though she lost the final in Moscow I can proudly say she has qualified for the Championships *yay*
Courtesy of an AP Sports article :)
By reaching the finals in Moscow, Davenport will move one position up in the rankings and has secured the No. 15 spot in the season-ending WTA Championships in Los Angeles on Nov. 6-11.
Davenport injured her right knee last November and underwent surgery in January, keeping her out of most tournaments this year. She resumed playing at the end of July and reached at least the semifinal in the six tournaments she played in before coming to Moscow.
Oct 8th, 2002, 01:17 PM
Congrats to Lindsay. Thanks for the info gossipcom. Do hope she improves her game and her attitude this week in Filderstadt. Playing doubles might help her.
Oct 8th, 2002, 01:54 PM
no problem - though all the info is conflicting according to all sources except for Sanex WTA website she's qualified, on there she hasn't *shrugs shoulderrs*.
Yeah doubles hopefully will help improve her serve and return and she couldn't have chosen anyone better than Lisa R (okay Renee S would have been the only other one) <g>
Oct 9th, 2002, 01:20 PM
Well the doubles scoreline was certainly fantastic! That was great for her teaming up with Lisa. Is Rennae Stubbs injured at the moment?
Go for the same scoreline against Smashnova Lindsay, well as near as you can get! LOL
Oct 9th, 2002, 01:57 PM
Nope Rennae's just taking a break I think - well I haven't heard if she's injured.
Yeah fingers crossed she can get to the next round - basically if Lindsay could get to the Qtr finals she'd have cemented her spot firmly in the top 16.
Oct 11th, 2002, 01:50 PM
She must be there then, Yes?
Oct 11th, 2002, 02:08 PM
As of right now she's sitting in 14th position with 1426.
I'd say if she manages to beat Kim then she's there - I'd make that call... if she doesn't win then it's still very wide open with 2 tournaments left in the year.
Oct 11th, 2002, 07:23 PM
i really hope tht she can win atleast 1 title b4 this yr ends... and i really hope she can claim bck her number 1 spot real soon... dnt u guys think so?
lindsay, the best!
Oct 14th, 2002, 01:00 PM
Its a pity she lost to Kim and she gets her again this tournament. I hope she can put her away this time!
As for getting back to No 1. She ought to have a good chance next year as long as she stays fit. She does not have any points to defend until the US Open wheras serena and Venus have a lot to defend. It could be a very interesting year!
Go Lindsay in Zurich
Oct 14th, 2002, 01:28 PM
The key for Lindsay is the no of tournaments she plays which she said won't be as many in the past (my guess probably 13 or 14) and staying injury free.
I hoping she'll come to Australia in January, because I booked my AI tickets today <g> as well she has a pretty good record here :)
Oct 15th, 2002, 03:27 PM
She'll definitely be in Australia. I also predict a renaissance for Lindsay next year. She'll be back. Why? Because King Lindsay is here!
Oct 16th, 2002, 12:37 PM
Well KING LINDSAY I hope you are right about QUEEN LINDSAY
I have a good feeling for Lindsay for 2003 and for the Oz Open.
GO GO GO LINDSAY

Some interesting comments on Sanex WTA Website re: Championships
Lindsay Davenport, who takes on Tatiana Panova on Wednesday evening, must also hit the ground running to help her chances of making the Championships. Davenport is in 14th spot but needs to win a few rounds in Zurich before she can book her flight to Los Angeles.
Others who could cement their places this week are defending champion Lindsay Davenport, who is currently at 14th in the Race and Anna Smashnova, who is in 16th spot but is bound to move up after Sunday's all-important win over Race rival Chanda Rubin.
Smashnova has never made it the Championships before, but after a standout year, which has seen her win four titles, few would argue that the Israeli deserves a place in the sportís elite.
Davenport has won the Championships in 1999 and knows exactly what it takes and would be odds-on to make the event again, particularly as this year it would mean a triumphant return to her native California.
Davenport still has plenty of work to do though - an early loss here in Zurich could deal a killer blow to her chances. With the Porsche Race to the Championships going down to wire, anything could happen in the next seven days.
