I believe it is time for separate thread for Karen Barbat from Denmark.

She has now been qualifying for ITF 25k tournament main draws numerous times this year and she just turned 16 on July 3rd 2008.

After a good junior year with a QF in Australian Open she is now focusing on the senior ITF tour.

She is presently ranked WTA-767 after being unranked earlier this year and she is improving all the time.

Good luck.

As posted earlier Karen will try to qualify for the 25k in Glasgow in the weekend.

After Glasgow I guess she will play for her Danish and Swedish clubs in the national team competitions.

Next ITF tournament will probably be the 100k in Odense, Denmark mid November hosted by the Wozniacki family. She should be in contest for a WC for this Danish tournament. At least for the qualification if she does not get in by her ranking.

Nice initiative!:)
I dont know much about Karen and her potential. The Press is allready too preoccupied with Caro (understandable), but it would be nice if womens tennis in Denmark could profit on Caro´s success and let young talents like Karen, get all the possibilities to expand her game...we need to explore the momentum, because Caro will not play forever :)

Go Karen!!

Crazy draw for the Danish girls. But actually a good chance for Karen to earn 18 points and to get a rare chance to play Caroline on a tour event. But Hanne has been showing steady progress lately.

But in any case a good chance to promote womens tennis in DK.

Good luck tomorrow.

kvinden Hanne Skak Jensen.

I saw the match. Karen played ok but Hanne was strong on the fast indoor surface. Hanne must have served at least 10 aces. Karen played at little too defensive behind the baseline and her second serv was too weak.
But this is life. It is just back to the practice court :)

Hviderusland - Slut

Here is her blog (sorry, in Danish only):

Svensk traditionsturnering

I won the semifinal today 6-2 6-2 after rain interruption yesterday at 3-1 30-40 in my serve. It was a difficult match for me with lots of nerves, rain and long delays yesterday. I knew that I had to win this battle here, which clearly had some impact on my game. It was hard to find my good relaxed game from other matches in the tournament. But I managed to win and hope that I can enjoy the final tomorrow and play better. I'm playing against a very good and solid french woman, who also played finals here last year. But a final is a final and I will always be proud to be among the last two out of 32 players.

Yes, according to the official Danish Open site (http://www.e-bokssonyericssonopen.dk/nyheder/nyheder/2010/7/11/fire-danskere-med-i-dansk-wta-turnering.aspx) Barbat, Grage, and also Ejdesgaard will get wc's to Slovenia Open! I did't expect any of the three to Danish girls to win, but Mai's performance was impressive (in spite of Olga Savchuk's illness). I hope Mai is willing to play full-time on the pro circuit (and gets the necessary help/funds/sponsors). She has already earned her first 6 WTA points today! But maybe we should give Mai her own thread?

And Karen? She seems really determined with her career, so I hope she will win some matches in Copenhagen. She could use the ranking points. Good luck!

Motivation i top

Klepac was once a top 100 player, and has much more experience at events like these but she's only ranked #490 at the moment. Karen has a decent chance of winning this, I think. It's a better draw - at least on paper - than Cecilie Melsted's and Mai Grage's! Good luck.

There's been some dispute/controversy with Karen Barbat (and especially Barbat's father) on the one side and The Danish Tennis Federation/Elitecentret on the other. All cooperation has stopped some time ago, which may be one of the reasons why Barbat's not given a MD wildcard (I'm stressing the word may, as it's probably not something we will ever know for sure).

About today's match (tv2.dk (http://sporten.tv2.dk/tennis/article.php/id-32574086:karen-barbat-det-var-megafedt.html)):

Karen Barbat: Great experience!

Loud music, line judges, own towel. This is not something the 18 year old Karen Barbat is used to in her life as a tennis player. But these thing were present at Farum today when she got her win.

- I was really nervous but I kept saying to myself that I just needed to win this match. I really want to perform well at the home arena, Barbat told tv2.dk after the match.

Karen Barbat is number 552 in the world, but she defeated Andrea Klepac (WTA-490) 6-3 0-6 and 6-4 in the first round of qualification .

Serve improved
Klepac is on her way back after an injury and is currently number 490 in the world. Previously she was in top 100, yet Barbat was not entirely satisfied.

- My serve is ok at times but too often I'm slaughtered on my second serve. But I told myself before the match that I wanted to have a good experience no matter what, and it was, says Karen Barbat to tv2.dk.

In the next round Barbat plays against Alexa Glatch (USA), a match where the Dane again has to play up to her best level if she wants to win.

Brother coach
Although Karen Barbat is just 18 years old, she was not the youngest on the court in today's match. During the match she got advice and guidance from her younger brother.

- He is my best friend. He understands me like noone else, and he knows just what to say to me and at what time. My biggest dream is to hire him as my coach, Barbat said after her victory to tv2.dk.

This victory gives Barbat six points for the WTA rankings, where she recently has achieved her career high ranking at number 552. If she wins Sunday's match she will get another 4 points.

I think there is a good reason for Karen not getting a WC for the MD. Two of the four WC's were reserved to an international management company (Octagon) which is quite normal for low tier WTA-tournaments. This is was also how Caroline received her first WC's in the US some years ago.

Caroline more or less owns this tournament i Farum so she decided to give a Danish WC to Malou Ejdesgaard (her good friend) and a WC to Srebotnik in exchange for three Q-WC's in Slovenia.

I think getting two WC's for WTA-Q instead of one WC for a WTA-MD was a good deal for both Mai and Karen as the chance of winning matches (and getting points) is much better this way.

I agree. Two q-wildcards may turn out to be much more useful career-wise than one md-wildcard. Mai Grage and Barbat have earned 6 wta-points each already (and there may be more points for Barbat today), while a md-wildcard probably wouldn't give them more than 1 point.

Sophie Lefevre (FRA) (29 years of age) is also a doubles specialist (ranked 1033 in singles and 123 in doubles), allthough not quite as good as Kondratieva. Lefevre and Kondratieva have played 10 tournaments together as a team in 2010. A tough match for Barbat/Grage!

A Danish name for sure, but hardly more than that....

Sonja Larsen is just 14 years of age but a really good player. There is an article about her on the tournament webpage (http://www.ntv-tennis.de/ntv_13318.php), and she was on German tv last night. It's impressive that she won the qualification final, but Karen should be able to beat a 14 year old.

Karen writes in her blog that her next opponent (Hanna Landener, GER) plays one-handed backhand. That's pretty unusual - especially for a 16-year old girl! The match will be played today at c. 15:30. Karen also plays doubles today.

EDIT: I forgot to mention Karen's ranking. She has a new career high rank this week: #515!

Yes, the did play some matches indoors. Karen said in her blog that it was chaotic. They played on carpet indoors (it's a clay tournament) and she slipped during training because there was water on the carpet (leak in the roof!). She thought for a moment that she was injured, but she's luckily OK.

Karen had a walkover in her 2nd round match and will probably play QF tomorrow (should have been played today according to OOP).

Unfortunately Karen and her Dutch partner lost their doubles QF in supertiebreak.

Karen's second round opponent (http://www.hanna-landener.de ) had a back injury - she had also slipped on the court, but in her first round match. She could finish that match and went to the physio but unfortunately the physio treated her muscles although it was a backbone-injury ...

oldgirl
Aug 29th, 2010, 10:06 AM
Hanna Landener is completely new on the tour, played her second ITF tournament and got her first ranking point. She is 16 years old and the backhand is really interesting.

Karen's opponent Carina Witthoeft is a german "young gun", she is only 15, but plays very clever and also has a clever management.

angliru
Aug 30th, 2010, 12:48 PM
The Barbat vs. Witthoeft QF was partly played in rain outdoors but when Barbat slipped late in the first set it was moved indoors on carpet (according to Karen's blog). It wasn't a very good experience for Karen, but she also praises Witthoeft who did very well for her age serving a lot of aces on the carpet!

Karen's next tournament may be 100K Sofia, Bulgaria, 13 September - 19 September 2010. This tournament has a very strong entry list: There are eight top-100 players on the entry list at the moment, so it will probably be difficult to get in! The withdrawal deadline is tomorrow.

Is Karen sponsored at all?

angliru
Feb 6th, 2011, 09:56 AM
I don't know for sure, but she must have some sponsoring - not just of clothing, equipment, gear, but also travels, hotels, living. To play on the tour is really expensive! Karen played approximately 25 tournaments last year - almost every time in a new country. There's no way her prize money could pay for that.

Even someone as succesful as the Polish Magda Linette - another 18 year old - couldn't keep a living based on prize money alone (yet!). She's ranked #171, and won four 25K tournaments in 2010, and was in the final in another three 25K's. Yet her total career earnings is only 26,000$! She couldn't live long for that.

Karen hasn't even won a title yet - not even 10K's - so it will take a while before she can make a living of playing tennis without sponsorships. (She has won two 10K doubles titles, but they're only worth $300 each). Of course there's also a possibility of Karen's family paying her expenses, but I don't think that's the case.

Upcoming schedule:

14 February - 20 February: 10K, Leimen, Germany (Hard)

Karen's blog (http://www.tennissporten.dk/pages/posts/lang-tid-siden-og-et-lille-confidenceboost-3785.php) today:

Long time... and a boost of confidence

It's been a long time since I've written in my blog. Lately I've been training a lot, and I have played a lot of team matches for my club Birkerød (bronze winners at the playoffs), and I won the Danish championship in singles for the first time [indoors]. I won another Swedish winter tour tournament in Malmö in December, and it was nice to have some extra matches there too. In January I went to Colorado, United States (some people I met during the WTA in Farum offered me training there), to train for more than 3 weeks until the Fed Cup. I've changed my game a bit during this period. This was noticeable during Fed Cup, where I had the honor of being 2nd single in all of Denmark's three matches (Switzerland, Great Britain, and the relegation match against Greece). I was beaten severely in the first two matches. However, I played better in the last match against Greece losing 2nd set in a tiebreak. It's all about being strong and confident, and learning from the defeats.

Now I am in Frankfurt, Germany, playing a $ 10,000. It has not been easy adapting to my new game, but I'm through to 2nd round winning 61 62 against a good German qualifier. I still have a lot to improve, but it was nice with a little win, and I hope I get the chance to play a lot of good matches here. Later today I also have a doubles match with my Latvian doubles partner Diana Marcenkevica. I know her from my junior days, so it's pretty exciting.

Tough draw, but Karen needs to start winning some matches against good players if she wants to improve her ranking. Good luck in doubles.

Bath draw (http://www.itftennis.com/womens/tournaments/drawsheetbyround.asp?tournament=1100023543&event=1100132913) is out. First round against Lina Stanciute (LTU) who is a former top-200 (and who beat Wozniacki a couple of years ago). Tough draw in a 10k but good luck.

Yes, difficult, but I hope Karen wins this one. She needs it. She plays tuesday not before 12:00 (http://www.lta.org.uk/NewWebsite/LTA/Documents/Fans%20News%20and%20Major%20Events/Results/2011/AEGON%20Pro-Series/Bath-Mar/Order%20of%20play.pdf). GL!

It'll also be interesting to see if she gets in at the 25K Bath next week. She's no. 3 on the alternate list at the moment.

Karen also lost in doubles 1st round. Maybe she'll stay in Britain and play 25K qualies at Bath. She's first on the alternate list atm.
