No Gajdosova, Moore, Adamczak, Dokic, Wheeler, Ferguson, Kriz or Bai means we will only have 3 direct entrants in an Aussie 25k :spit:
Starr, Golds and Mirkovic. That with 4 wildcards (and hopefully a couple of qualifiers) means we might get 10 entrants :scared:

Wouldn't it be nice to see all these girls play at the same time, I can understand why girls like Gajdosova and Jess Moore want to play a weak 100k. But Soph Ferguson, Jelena Dokic, and Nicole Kriz could very much capitalize on tournaments like this. Monique and Alison have excuses, they are injured... Soph I imagine, is just a headcase.

Easy draw for Sally to qualify.
Tyra has some competition with Nguyen there, as does Sheed with Pejkovic ( she is back in Australia)
Can't believe TA made Olivia R play quallies AGAIN *groan*
With Welford and Scivetti in her part of the draw, Liv has the toughest section, but will still qualify comfortably.

Good luck to all the Aussies, hope to see AT LEAST 4 qualify for MD

Good chance for the Aussie girls to pick up more points here this week :)

Loving Isabella/Sally's draw. *POTENTIALLY* one of them can make it to the semi finals, BUT it all depends which Sacha turns up
1_ The, 'oh I am a tennis player, I forgot, Sacha'
2_ The, 'oh I am going to lose to a 'mediocre' Aussie junior, Sacha'
3_ The, 'I am playing badly but will fight to win, Sacha'
4_ The, 'I am a great player and will win this tournament, Sacha'

Good chance for the Aussie girls to pick up more points here this week :)

Loving Isabella/Sally's draw. *POTENTIALLY* one of them can make it to the semi finals, BUT it all depends which Sacha turns up
1_ The, 'oh I am a tennis player, I forgot, Sacha'
2_ The, 'oh I am going to lose to a 'mediocre' Aussie junior, Sacha'
3_ The, 'I am playing badly but will fight to win, Sacha'
4_ The, 'I am a great player and will win this tournament, Sacha'

Yea I'd agree with that

Sacha, if you reading this - please be a darling and beat the crap of that thing

No, Sacha, if you read this, be a darling and do the honourable thing, lose to Sally ;)

I read somewhere at the start of the year that one of Sacha's goals this year was to qualify for all 4 grand slams :tape: she is about as far away from that now as ever. And if she wants to play the Aussie Open quallies again, she will need a wildcard :o Unless of course the in form Sacha cleans up here this week and in Port Pirie next week

Disappointing loss for Isabella there
Oh well, she played her doubles match, so hopefully she is not injured and this was just a really bad day at the office. She has been playing at a pretty high level since Wimbledon, so there are bound to be some down points. Hope that this doesn't cost her an AO MD WC and she can get a better result next week in Port Pirie.

Great win for Marija, she just keeps rolling along! Miyamura is a top 500 player and has beaten some decent players this year, so coudos to Marija :D

Olivia :woohoo: :yeah:

She looks to be in some great form, and now a crack at the #4 seed. She's played a lot of matches lately (6 in Traralgon, 3 here in Mount Gambier) which is something she's probably not usually used to, but hopefully she's not too tired. Most of her wins have been pretty straight forward so I'd be surprised if it was to take that big a toll on her, but we'll have to wait and see.

It's a shame she had such bad draws in Rockhampton and Kawana though :o It really could have been a big boost to her WC chances at the AO next year, but I guess bad draws are a part of tennis. Still, so happy with how well Liv has been doing the last fortnight or so. :)

Interesting...Who would you say have a bigger profile than Sally? Definitely Moore and Holland, maybe also Rogowska (after beating Jelena Dokic and Sophie Ferguson en route to the 2007 Australian Open Playoff final). I'd say Peers has a bigger profile than Bai, probably also Mirkovic and Hubacek, and definitely Sheed. Oh and Calderwood has a bigger profile than all bar Moore and Holland (but her tennis doesn't justify that).

Australian Open the target for Melanie

Top speed Melanie South won through to the semi-finals of the Mount Gambier Blue Lake Women’s International Tennis tournament today with a 6-3, 7-5 victory against Shiho Hisamatsu.

The powerful Englishwoman (pictured left in an earlier game) was too strong for her Japanese opponent in warm conditions.

South was given a scare in the second set though, when Hisamatsu broke serve to level the games at five apiece.
Down 15-40 in the next game South dug deep and clawed back to hold serve, then won the match with a decisive break.
Ranked 128 in the world, South told The Border Watch her objective is to win the tournament and keep winning on the satellite circuit to crack the main qualifying draw at the Australian Open.

“There’s a lot at stake for me,” she said.
“I’m aiming to get my ranking down to 110.”
South said conditions were warmer than she had experienced on previous visits to Mount Gambier, and she always felt confident against Hisamatsu.

“I knew if I stayed aggressive I’d take control,” she said.

South had a much stronger serve than Hisamatsu and aced her opponent several times. She also dominated rallies from the back of the court with her explosive forehand.
Hisamatsu worried the Englishwoman when she chipped it around and forced South to stretch for the ball with clever drop shots and lobs.
South was equal to the challenge and covered plenty of ground at speed to maintain control.

South and Grandin to contest tennis final

Posted on October 18, 2008, 3:03pm

The stage is set for a fascinating final of the Mount Gambier Blue Lake International Women’s Tennis Tournament between powerful English player Melanie South and skilful South African Natalie Grandin.
Both women won their semi-finals convincingly in straight sets.
South knocked out I-Husan Hwang from Taiwan 6-4, 6-0 while Grandin was too classy for promising young Australian Sally Peers 6-1, 6-1.
Grandin, 27, has beaten South, 22, in their two previous encounters, but is expecting a tougher contest this time.

“I have hardly played singles this year,” she said.
“I took the first three months of the year off with a knee injury and then played a lot of doubles.
“My goal is to qualify for the Australian Open.”
Grandin was impressive in tricky conditions before a small crowd in the semi final.
The talented left hander simply hit too many winners for the erratic Peers, who never came to terms with the blustery wind and served six double faults.
Grandin worked the ball around the court, slicing it heavily to reduce Peers’ hitting power. She deftly dropped the ball over the net for winners several times from the back of the court.
Peers lost her first two service games and never seriously challenged. It was a great tournament though for the unseeded qualifier and she will take much confidence into the next event at Port Pirie.
For Grandin, success in Mount Gambier will bolster her credentials as a singles player.
She was pleased with her form in the semi-final, which was played in warm and windy weather.
“It was very tough out there,” Grandin said.
“I thought I played smart in the conditions.”
Melanie South had no trouble disposing of Hwang in the first semi-final, although both players made many unforced errors in the first set.
Hwang opened with a double fault and lost her first service game. She broke back immediately in the next game, then games went with serve to 3-3.
Both players struggled with their ball toss and serve. There were three more breaks when games were at 5-4 in South’s favor.
With the set up for grabs the Englishwoman finally took control, hitting two clear winners and serving two successive aces to close out the game.
South dominated the second set. She reduced her error rate, improved her serve, forced more errors from Hwang and hit more winners.
She broke Hwang’s serve twice in the first three games. With the score at 3-0 the Taiwanese woman took a medical break and returned with a shoulder strap.
South was unflustered by the interruption and closed out the match in convincing fashion. She hit several cross-court double-handed backhand winners that left Hwang standing flat footed.
South served three aces for the match and four double faults. She will be hoping for calmer conditions tomorrow in the final.

Yeah, both her parents were in Hobart last year (where I saw them). They were both really nice. I really hope she can win here and do well next week. Thjat'll give her a good chance to make Ao quallies. :D

If Nat wins at least Peers would of lost to the eventual champion.

Good luck :)

Live reporting from the tennis
I’m going to try something new today … live online reporting of the women’s international tennis final between Melanie South (Eng) and Natalie Grandin (RSA).

I’ll be posting scores to Twitter from 3.30GMT.

After mentioning the possibility yesterday, a couple of British tennis websites linked to the Twitter address. Although the match will be played in the wee hours their time, there might be some keen fans following it.

I have this fear that my phone battery will die half way through, so I’m taking the mini laptop as well. Between the two of them I should make it to the end unless it’s a long three sets.

I’m also going to try taking photos and some video.

Well done Natalie! :D I hope this gives her the confidence to continue on this road...she is too talented not to be ranked much, much higher...Does anyone know what her fitness levels right now? I am curious to know...Can't wait for those reports. Best of luck to Melanie as she goes into 2009...but FINALLY another title for Natalie Grandin, the crafty Queen! :D

A bit late to comment, but it was a good match to watch. I think Nat has a great future if she can strengthen her serve. Mel needs to play with more confidence. She let the ball bounce a few times when she should have volleyed, and she doesn't have much variation (ie drop shot or lob).

Nat a great future? She's hardly young. ;) But hopefully she'll get back into the top 200 at least. :D
