Wasn´t Jie Zheng not the girl who beats Ana already in Wimbledon?
It seems, Jie likes Ana a lot (as opponent). :)
But Ana played better than the last weeks, I think.

Sep 26th, 2008, 07:40 AM
That match shouldn't have gone to 3 sets. It was like Jie didn't want to win.

Anyway!! Good result for the mature future top 10 player. Win the tournament!

Tough luck Ana, learn some tactics and you might get past a quarter final.

Sep 26th, 2008, 07:41 AM
Ana should have won that. Congrats the Jie though. Ana served for the 1st set twice and lost it, then her service game went south at the begining of the 3rd. There were flashes of the old Ana, but man is the ugly stuff ever ugly!

she played better for sure

but she had plenty of chances to win that third set, heaps of deuce games on zheng's serve and the game she was broken she was up 40-15

Sep 26th, 2008, 07:41 AM
No surprise ....i was cheering for her but... she was bad 2day, i said it before Ana is a good player but not really top material, 2 defeats in a row by Zheng , her forehand was weak , too much UE , if she continues like this.. she will fall out the top 10 after the AO 2009 ... She s now playing like a top 20 player... she can do better.

jie played some very scrapy tennis even though she won. when i said to ana fans that she played crap yesterday its just cornet was shit, they told me she played well in 'x' game and 'y', well its just not good enough. if jie hadn't been nervous and played a little less erratic she would have taken it in straights, she totaly lost her rythem in the 2nd set.

as for ana its no better, shes still spraying the ball all over and you can almost count on her to miss on the big points. she realy needs this season over with. still no back to back wins since the french!

Harju.
Sep 26th, 2008, 07:43 AM
Jie hit two outrageous winners on the last game.. She did play better during the crucial points and basically that comes down to it.

Ana .
She'd be back soon.

That was excellent match. Great play by both girls. They both were fighting so hard and most of the errors were errors of agression although Jie did hit some silly errors too. Overall though I have to say Jie is amazing. Credit to her.

But for Ana fans I wouldn't get too dishearten. That had to be the best Ana has played since RG. Playing like that Ana will be tough to beat and she is still not quite at her best. Based on that performance even though it was a loss I would say the slump is basically over and I expect very good results from Ana for the rest of the year.

Well done Jie :yeah:. Her game is really a joy to watch, so quick and aggressive all the time :hearts:. She can put the ball wherever she wants. Very happy for her :D.

Ana is so streaky now. She can't keep control against anyone. The offseason will serve her well. I don't know if she'll play her best the rest of this year.

Congrats to Jie though! She probably played some damn good tennis under a lot of pressure.

Absolutely. I wasn't embarressed for Aga who I like a lot when she lost to Jie. I wouldn't have been embarressed if I was Ai either. And Ana played a very competitive match against a woman who is playing shit hot tennis right now. Nothing in the slightest for Ana to be ashamed of. She could have put up more of a fight in that last game but besides that she fought like a lion all the way. Good match from both girls.

When you have a loss to Julie Coin in your dossier, I just don't get how a loss to Jie Zheng could be an embarrassment.
edit: Ok, I'm a bit evil here, but Ana's been in a crisis for a while now while Jie's been playing great, so the result is not a surprise at all.

Why? Her game is just coming together. She needs matches. Taking the rest of the year off would be insane.

It´s not her game, it´s mental. The strokes are there, at least they were against Cornet. She looks frightened on the court, and when you are not a defnesive wizard, but somebody that has to stay on top of their opponent confidence is important. She has none, she is about to break down every minute on the court. She was against Cornet, who just happens to be horrible on anything but clay, and even she served for the 2nd set.

I agree. She lacks confidence and that's the reason she lost this match. One year ago she would have won this comfortably.

This match is fun to watch with a lot of deuces and break points.
happy for Zheng to reach the semi-finals but meanwhile i'm glad to see that Ana is playing better than two months ago, when she could hardly deal with the flat&fast balls.

Please don't play doubles, Zheng...

The points Ana has from the first two slams alone will keep her top fifteen, plus those Madrid and Indian Wells points she'll make up for elsewhere if this slump is elongated.

Weird having someone ranked #5 now with only four great results on her rank (AO, FO, IW, YEC)...thankfully she picked all really big events.

'grats Jie, I was hoping you'd pull this out.

Typical Ana for me; great winners, nice approaches to the net followed by hideous inexplicable errors. It's always been this way (except maybe a bit worse now) which is a big part of why I dislike her game so much. What made the difference today was her will. She looked so unsure out there, her body language was just very down. It's sad to see even if I was rooting for Zheng (not out of Schadenfreude, I really do like Zheng and this is her home event.) Well, congrats Jie, sorry Ana.

I continue to say Ivanovic plays mindless tennis.
She bangs that forehand all day long with no apparent sense of point construction.
If I were Ana I would ask to see some of Serena's matches where Serena backs off hitting so hard and rolls a few forehands/backhands to get some consistency.
Its one thing to try for consistency without falling into defense mode like Jelena often does.
Ana needs to learn point construction, basically she needs PLAN EFFIN B when all that ball bashing is producing errors, especially coupled with crap serving!

I beg to disagree. She does not just bash the ball. At the very least, she frequently hits wrong-footers, approaches the net with increasing frequency, and moves the ball around without going for too much (when she is playng well, I mean). Her problems are completely mental.

How is losing in three tight sets to Zheng an embarrassment? You're an Ana hater anyway, so whatever.

It s embarrassing that a "top" player loses twice in a row from a top 30 player, so imo Ana isn t a top player but a good player.... and this is not coming from an Ana hater..

If she is fall comet, then what is Hantuchova:scratch:

The thirteenth ranked woman in the world who has had to overcome a lot in her career and has continued to fight through each and every obstacle. She's also coming back from a heel injury that hampered her from playing what was the best tennis of her career. I don't really understand attacking another player because they're in someone's signature. It's not necessary. :wavey:

In a GS a QF is a good result , not when you won 1 match.. to get in the QF..

i think with Ana its a confidence issue she has lost that in her shots, after Jie broke back in the first set you could see the doubt in Ana by her body language she looked nervous too plus Jie was really aggressive she never let go of the gas pedal.
She will get over this hump with time but I am afraid she is going to go down in ranking from now till February next yr.I am sure this phase is a learning experience ....

Yes. Even with this loss, I felt like a small corner may have been turned in Beijing.

Sigh... well...

If I were you I'd jump for joy. Huge win for Jie which should give her a real boost confidence wise in the coming months. Truely I expect to see her in the top 20 next year, and I wouldn't rule out the possibility of her reaching the top 10, although that wouldn't be easy.

And for Ana, well personally I think it was the best match Ana has played since RG. She could do with being a bit stronger mentally at the moment but that only comes with playing more matches, something she seems to be doing. Personally I saw a lot to be positive about in Ana's performance today.

The other reason to jump for joy rather than cry with sadness is a simple one. It feels better and if you can find a reason to justify it, and you got reasons, then it makes sense to do it.

In other words...ChrisCHorse sez start jumping. ;)

happy for Zheng to reach the semi-finals but meanwhile i'm glad to see that Ana is playing better than two months ago, when she could hardly deal with the flat&fast balls.

watching ivanovic play its very hard to believe she is a current grand slam champion and former world number 1. her ball toss is all over the place, she is letting people dominate her and then when she attacks she misfires
