And Marion said that Lindsay was not really injured. So for me, Serena and Lindsay didn't assume their double bagels. Lindsay was 5-0 down in the 1st set of that match, I doubt she was worrying about being double bageled at that point. Anyway it doesn't matter if they pull out or not. Fact is, they didn't lose 12 games in a row so it's not a double bagel. And I don't think professionals (especially Serena and Lindsay) would retire from a match just because they don't want a double bagel. Seles, for instance, could barely move and was even booed because some stupid fans thought she wasn't trying or tanking. No, I haven't seen all of the matches where people retire before they are double-bagelled. But, I say it's dumb because no one should risk their career to continue to play in a match where they are clearly injured and can "barely move". I thought it was dumb of Venus to finish that final against Seren at Wimbledon '03. She was clearly severly injured, but she continued in order to give the audience a good final, which didn't result because she could barely play in the end. I happen to believe, except in the case of Justine , that most players who retire, especially the top players, are injured and can't continue. I don't buy into the scenerio that they just don't want to be double bagelled because they are playing so badly and they are losing. Most top players (top 20) at least, will keep trying to at least win a few games even if they are playing badly. I believe for a top player to get double-bagelled, they either have to be injured and not smart enough to retire (live to fight another day), or they are not injured and the conditions on that day (along with a good opponent) make it difficult for them to get a game won. | |
