Welcome to Flushing Meadows, New York, for the season's final Grand Slam. The first 7 Slams of OWTT have seen 7 different winners - will we have another new Grand Slam winner here in New York? With not long to go until the Year End Championships, this tournament will be crucial in players' campaigns for the season-ending Top 8. Let's check out the big guns here in New York....

The Favourites

http://dallassports.files.wordpress.com/2007/09/s082795a.jpg

#1 Serena Williams - She reached the QF in New Haven this week, but won the Tier II title in Los Angeles a couple of weeks before. She finished #2 in the US Series Race, and will be looking to do well here to make use of her 75% points bonus. She is yet to really prove herself at the Slams though.

http://sites.evc.net/wta/Daniela_Hantuchova/Daniela_Hantuchova_157.jpg

#3 Daniela Hantuchova - Winner of the US Series Race due to title wins in Stanford and Montreal, Jankovic is definitely a huge threat here in New York. With a 100% points bonus, she will be looking to go deep and close the gap on Serena at #1.

http://www.tennis.info/images/US4/10Sun/Schnyder7723.jpg

#22 Patty Schnyder - She just won New Haven and so is the in-form player heading into the Open. She also reached the QF at Stanford so is playing well right now. She finished #3 in the US Series Race and will be looking to make use of her 50% ranking points bonus.

The Contenders

http://www.mariovilla.com/eventi/masterseries2003/01/images/22_dinara_safina.jpg

#2 Dinara Safina – Decent showing for Safina in the run up to New York, with a RU finish in Los Angeles, and a QF in Montreal. She has contended the last 2 Slam finals so will be expected to go deep, but I lack confidence in her mental ability to go the whole way.

http://www.wtnphotos.com/data/550/1akoupic113.jpg

#9 Anna Kournikova - She has had a fairly solid run-up to this tournament, with SF showings in Stanford and Los Angeles. She definitely has the game, and knows what it takes to win a Slam.

http://www.sport.be/fotospecial/2680/safarova.jpg

#13 Lucie Safarova – consistent performer on tour, reaching QF in Stanford and Los Angeles, and a SF in New Haven – she has a great game when it is on.

http://blogsimages.skynet.be/images/000/225/245_Nathalie%20Dechy.jpg

#20 Nathalie Dechy - Dechy has been impressive, reaching the SF in Los Angeles and the final in New Haven. If he can make a few minor changes, she can definitely be challenging for the title here.

The Dark Horses

http://i16.tinypic.com/2uzvuhd.jpg

#4 Alize Cornet – Poor hardcourt season by her standards until she got to New Haven where she reached the SF. She seems to come alive in the Slams though, so will be a threat for the title.

http://z.about.com/d/tennis/1/7/1/C/2006-us-open-2.jpg

#5 Elena Dementieva – former #1 player is a huge threat to whoever she plays. She is playing her way into form with a QF in Los Angeles and a SF in Montreal.

http://img407.imageshack.us/img407/7741/io26901galleryyp7.jpg

#28 Michelle Larcher-de-Brito - She can trouble the top players, and made the final in Montreal, as well as a QF finish in New Haven. She could be one to watch this week.

http://gravyandbiscuits.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/05/harkleroad-ashley-photo-ashley-harkleroad-6225311.jpg

#30 Ashley Harkleroad - she had a great week back in Stanford, with a RU finish. She has struggled since, but has shown she has the game to do well.

Serenaliciously well done

http://cache.daylife.com/imageserve/06Rw7zVgGNdTq/340x.jpg

Serena Williams has already had opportunites of getting to a Grand Slam final in the past two seasons, but has never made her dream came true. This week she is as determinated as she has never been, after a lot of struggles who brought her to the US Open, Serena William has decided to change things in her game and come up with something new in front of her home crowd. the American women has loads of pressure on her shoulder as she's number 1 and will have to defend tons of points over the next four weeks to keep this spot.

In first round she faced the Spaniard and qualifer, Maria Sanchez Lorenzo, so we thought Serena would simply steamroll her, but she didn't. Was it cause of injuries, cause of a lack of fitness, cause she aws in a bad day? We don't know but it looked like it was cause of the three as she was palying some terrible tennis. Serena still got through it 6-1 2-6 7-6(4), Ree said after the match, "She must have felt like in a dream, the world number one almost offered her the biggest upset of her carreer, I was playing awful, I'm glad I pulled it off, I would be ashamed to lose to such a bad player."

Second round was against Gisela Dulko, an opponent Serena had always struggled against in the past, but not this time. The Queen of the Tour prevailed 6-1 0-6 6-3 and said about the match, "It was quite weird. I respect Gise's game but I know I should be able to win my matches against her I went out there really focused but lost my concentration in the second set, things were going too well I guess. I still regrouped quickly in the third set and I'm proud of it, this wins really gives me a confidence boost, it was a match I was fearing a bit."

Her QF match was against the surprising(ly old) Monica Seles, Serena ass whooped her 6-1 1-6 6-1, Serena totally the tanked the second set, seems like she jsut wanted to give the crowd a longer match. The best player in the world said afterwards, "I can't believe she made it to the QFs! She's so bad, she's so old, go back to retirement, she can't run and doesn't have what it needs to counter the power the top players have. It realy was my easiest match of the tournament, Patty should be real tough next."

What a great match between these two! Serena's power shone through in the first set, whilst Schnyder's variation frustrated Serena in the second set. The third set was a tense affair, with Serena getting the early break, before Schnyder hit back to lead 5-4. However, Serena was not prepared to lose at her home Slam and really dug deep, winning the next 3 games to book her spot in the final. Schnyder should be proud of how she has played, and with her 50% US Series Race bonus, goes away with 375 points :)

Another awesome semi here in New York! This match was full of momentum swings. Safina will be livid that she didn't close out the first set from 4-0 up, but all credit to Cornet for fighting back and being just that little bit stronger in the end. Safina fails in her bid to make her third straight Slam final, but is still playing awesome tennis. Aussie Open champ Cornet advances to the final to take on #1 seed Serena Williams

Serena rolls over Ugly Patty : Ugly Ali as opponent in final!

http://graphics8.nytimes.com/images/2008/09/08/sports/08open.xlarge4.jpg

Serena Williams will try to prove the world she totally deserves her number 1 spot in this last GS of the year, in front of her home crowd. In semi-final she was taking over Patty Schnyder, from Switzerland, before stepping on court Serena said, "Her angles and top spin shots are gonna be a tough challenge, but the real challenge will be to look straight to her head and stay focus. Have you ever seen such an awful hairdo?!?"

Serena then stepped on court really determinated to win this match. She showed that Ugly Patty wasn't intimitading her right off the beginning, winning the first set in 21 minutes, 6-1, but gave up the second one in 31 minutes 2-6. The the real action started in the final set, Serena got up to her 4-2 lead, on serve and was borken on a weird point. While Ree was serving, it seems like a bird came out of Patty's hair, look like a bird was hiding in her hair since the beginning of the match, ready to disturb Ree at a critical moment of the match.

Ree complained to the umpire that a bird really came out, but the umpire said she wasn't a fool and some other stupid stuff, how can you deny the world's number sayings? Serena was totally furious and after insulting the chair umpire went back to her chair. Then some suspiscious calls were made in the next game and Serena got out of herself after losing a second straight game to make it 4-4 and said to the referee she was a "Fuck*ng bitch" and got a game penalty for it. She surpringly stayed cool, after breaking her racket on the field, and went back to her chair. SHe then hit 12 winners in a row to win the final set 7-5. Patty didn't shake Reena's hand and kicked her water bottle and went away running.

In final Serena will face Alizé Cornet and said about the upcoming match, "Let's face the truth, she has had better results than me in big tournaments, but looking at talent only, I'm twice as good as her. Of what I heard she didn't had any surgery for her nose since she was born, it's a bit sad, she could have beautiful face, but with this Micheal Jackson nose she looks totally stupid. I'll try to correct this with a winner passing shot at the net. Wouldn't it be nice?"

Congratulations to #1 Serena Williams on claimng her 5th title of the season, 8th overall in OWTT and her first Grand Slam title. Serena makes it 8 out of 8 new Slam champions! She had underperformed at the Slams previously, but was on fire here in New York, spurred on by the American crowd. Cornet was runner-up here last year, but couldn't stick with Serena in the end, and has to settle for runner-up once more, but still an amazing tournament for her. Together with her US Open Series bonus, Serena walks away from New York with 1225 points  which is great for her as she has 3 tournaments to defend in the coming weeks.

Serena's first GS triumph

http://cache.daylife.com/imageserve/03xn1UmdgP1Mi/610x.jpg

After struggling on big stages since the beginning of her career, Serena Williams faced her demons in Fulshing Meadows, proving her world number 1 spot was well deserved. Serena had won Tier I titles in season 1 of the OWTT, but since the beginning of the second season, all of her four titles were Tier IIs so people started questionning if she really was the best in the world, but after this marvelous week, there's no more doubt: She is the best.

Serena Williams had to overcome a third set tie breaker in first round, she had to beat Gisela, whom she had always difficulties to prevent against in their previous meetings. The draw then opened up a bit with Monica Seles and Patty Schnyder to finally face the world number 4, Alize Cornet in final. The two finalists never really liked each other and had some really big fights in the past, particularly in last season's Wimbledon tournament.

The final was weird, starting with two bagles, Serena was really loud in the first set, screaming after each point she would win but things turned around in the second set. Cornet lifted her game up and Serena got negative and made a lot of mistakes, she looked like she was melting down under the pressure.

The Queen of the tour then had a bathroom break to change her clothes, she came back on court and seemed more relaxed. Both girls found a way to show some of their best tennis, going to 2-2 and 3-2 for Serena and then the crucial game of the match came. Alize was facing break point and went to the net and as promised, Serena made an increbidle passing shot right down the Frenchie's nose. Serena broke and screamed a loud "Come On!", and Alize then shouted an heavy "Allez!". People seemed mixed up a bit, but Alizé was touching her nose and couldn't believe how beautiful it now was.

Things then kept on going with no more break, Serena overpowered Alizé on the last points of the match, she was hitting harder and harder and Alizé seemed discouraged as Ree was making no unforced errors and making her run as much as she never had before. After Ree won her MP she threw her racket in the air and started jumping sooo high, she had won her first Grand Slam and secured her numbe 1 spot for some more weeks.

Serena said in interview, "I can't believe it. I really was playing awesome out there except the second set. I'm so glad I've done it in front of my fans. Sorry Alizé, but you just ain't my level yet and won't ever be, but you can keep dreaming." The crowd then laughed and Alize went away running in tears, get a sense of humour baby girl.

Cornet promises to step up commitment

http://www.alize-cornet.com/galerie/albums/photos/AlizeONcourt/Annee2008/new%20haven/normal_alize-newhaven08-gettywta6.jpg

French #1 Alize Cornet today apologised to the Tour Director for her lack of commitment over the past few weeks, pledging that for the rest of the year she would get her priorities right and be a major force on the tour once again.

"I had an amazing start to the season this year taking a few titles including the Australian Open, and was definitely the hottest player on tour. Unfortunately in the Asian hard court stint I picked up an ankle injury from playing so much and had a very bad time of it. Things started to look up again in the clay season where I had some strong results in Berlin and Rome. I was really looking forward to Roland Garros after that - I had loved playing in Paris [Indoors] in front of the home crowd - and really thought I had a good shot at the title. Unfortunately it wasn't to be and my game just didn't turn up. This was a huge disappointment for me and had a knock on effect in Wimbledon and most of the US Hard court season."

"However I had a good result in New Haven and this gave me a bit of confidence coming in here. I knew I had a lot of points to defend and this really focussed me on what I had to do. I think I played myself into the tournament, I had a tough 1st round again Amelie but fighting through that helped me a lot. Unfortunately I couldn't quite go all the way and I am bridesmaid again. I don't mind though, I am more than happy to get this far. I think it hurt much more last year for some reason. Serena is a deserving winner and a deserving #1. That doesn't mean I think she is a better player, I aim to get back up to my best and challenge for the #1 spot. I don't have a lot of points to defend at all in the coming weeks so I think I am almost certain to qualify for the Year End Championships."

"My goals for the rest of the season are to get as close to #1 as possible, hopefully winning another title along the way. Then next season I am looking to become the 1st person to defend a grand slam in OWTT. One thing you can be sure of is that now i'm giving 100% to my tennis
