Post videos.

I'll go first.
Ana: Would have to be YEC SF against Justine l. 6-4 6-4, but made great efforts fighting from *5-2 down in the first and *3-0 down in the second. In the second she retrieved both breaks only to get broken again. What was amazing was that she was winning backhand rallies with an on-fire Justine after being demolished by Sharapova.

Check out the point when Ana hit a winner off Justine's overhead.

Though probably not many would care but Strasbourg SF 2008 has to be one of the best matches of Chan(in which she lost to Srebotnik 16 76(8) 46,saving 3 MPs in a row in the tie-break).

She was literally firing winner after winner out of nowhere. :scared:

Most of the matches she lost to Clijsters and Henin Elena played very very well. It's hard to pick which one.

The Belgians definitely forced Elena to play her best.

Incorrect. I didn't see that match, but I don't see how her losing 1 and 3 could be better than her other loss to Radwanska this year in Charleston. THAT was magnificent stuff.

I can't think of many Marion matches, but I do think her loss to Radwanska last year in Stuttgart was a lot better than the scoreline reflects.

US Open 2001 Quarters to Serena- very high quality match, both played well, Serena just clinched it in the end.

Wimbledon 2005 Final to Venus- Lindsay played exceptionally well considering her back injury.

But most of the time when Lindsay does play like she did in these two matches, she wins.

If Venus was the best, she would have won from Serena. Serena is the best on all assets, besides the net and grass, but even there, she's narrowing on Venus.

Anyhow both are great players, Serena's just the better one.

Venus:
USO QF 2008 - Lost to Serena 7-6, 7-6
USO SF 2007 - Lost to Henin 7-6, 6-4

She played so well in both matches, some really stunning tennis but was just edged out in both of them. However two years running she has provided the sternest test for the eventual champion.

Serena:
Berlin QF 2008 - Lost to Safina 7-6 in the third. I know Serena took a mental walkabout mid match but both players were somewhat erratic and somewhat great in the final set but Safina edged it.
Wimbledon QF 2007 - Lost to Henin in 3. I still can't believe that it took a player of Henin's calibre 3 sets to defeat an injured Serena (who didn't hit a backhand winner) but as her 4th round match showed she has some amount of fight! It wasn't the most stunning of tennis from her but it was a gutsy performance.

I wish my memory stretched back further. I always reference relatively recent matches in these types of threads.

I have no idea. Whenever Serena loses she never actually plays well.

Off the top of my head I'd saw the epic match at AO with Hingis and also Wimbledon 2007 QF - injured but still fighting.

^^ Henin has often struggled against injured opponents (I know there have been a few cases with Lindsay at least). It puts more pressure on the one who isn't injured to put them away. But as you said Serena is a fighter and is hard for anyone to put away.

Berlin has been an unlucky place for Serena. She's lost two fairly big matches 76 in the third there.

She was playing some of the best tennis I've seen her play in both of those matches, but Safina and Henin were actually mentally stronger than Serena on those days. Henin saved MPs to win it in 2002 and Serena was ahead in the tie break I believe against Safina, but Safina held her nerve to comeback.

Venus:

Losing to Serena at the Aussie Open 03- Played her ass off, and still got nothing. Had a break in the first two sets, and ended up losing in 3. Still my favourite Williams final:D

Losing to Graf at Wimbledon 99- Absorbing match, with Graf edging her out in the closing stages.

Losing to Hingis at the Open in 99- Match of the highest quality. Venus showed so much class to come back from an awful start and forced Hingis to play some of her best ever tennis. That penultimate shot from Hingis was lights out tennis:eek:

I wouldnt put any of Venus's matches since 2003.. Venus was too patchy in the 2007 USO semi and the 2008 QF losing 10 set pts and being unable to serve out a set on different occasions is just disgraceful.

Vee played well against Graf(Wimby) and Hingis(USO) in 1999
Also in the Stanford final, Vee was REALLY close 6-7 7-5 6-7 against Davenport

Jennifer Capriati against Henin at USO 2003
Clijsters against Capriati RG 2001 F

I'm trying to remember how good the 2002 YEC semi between Capriati and Serena was and the Wimby quarters between those two in 2001.. if anyone could help me out, that'd be great.

the 2002 YEC semi is one of my favorite matches in their rivalry!!! Serena won 2-6, 6-4, 6-4. Capriati was up 3-1 in the third set but Serena came back. Jennifer actually had a point for 4-1 in the third, but Serena saved it and then broke back in the next game. That was probably the best Jennifer ever played going toe-to-toe with Serena. All the other times she beat Serena by playing good defense instead of trying to hit with her.

The 2001 Wimbledon quarters was the match where Serena had the upset stomach. She was up 7-6, 5-3 and 30-love when she basically choked. Capriati went on to win 6-7, 7-5, 6-3. Serena should have won that match, and she probably would have beaten Justine in the semis, and that would have been the first all-Williams final at Wimbledon, but it's not like I'm lamenting.
