Sharapova.

Ana haters stay away from this thread :armed:

Best slam run of the year for me is Sharapova. She totally dominated that tournament. Serena's is also very impressive, finishing with straight sets victories over wimbledon champ Venus, most in-form player Safina (2 + 3!!), and then Jankovic.

Sharapova by far, that was incredible domination. Serena's US Open after that, and Venus's Wimbledon close after. Ivanovic's cake draw Heninless Slam was a joke. LMAO.

Wow, Sharapova only losing 32 games, that's pretty impressive:eek:

Certainly the most efficient Slam win, but i would pick Serena's. Saving 10 set points against the Wimbledon champ in the QF, then handily beating the tour's most in firm player in the SF and then saving set points to beat a former number 1 in the final, then becoming number 1 herself. That's pretty incredible:worship:

Sharapova. Because she beat Davenport, ivanovic and trashed the belgian, Sharapova was unbeatable at that tournament
Then comes Serena´s US Open

I really liked Serena's "revenge run"

But Sharapova played the most dominant tennis to win, which makes hers the more impressive to me.

Serena was the only player to have not reached at least the finals of the major they won in 2007 :lol:

Even though I was in TEARS over Serena's win, I have to just give Sharapova the edge. She demolished Henin and ended her INSANE winning streak.

SUPER close 2nd is Serena. Venus is 3rd, and Ana's run is 4th.

mmm no.On paper (seeing the players she beat)she had the best run but in reality Davenport's level was beyond pathetic (her worst match since a long time imo) not moving at all, Henin was already out of it mentally and Jelena was injured.Maria did beat the players she had to beat and in brilliant manner but I just think it was far less difficult than some claim it to be.

I have to say Sharapova, even though Davenport wasn't at her best and Jankovic was clearly injured in the semi. I was impressed with her demolitions of Dementieva and Henin. She also managed to hold off Ana from taking the 1st set in the final after Ivanovic briefly gained the momentum.

Serena is next-beating Venus, Safina and Jankovic in straight sets.

Oh please,Maria was just too good for all of them, injured or not, they didn't have any chances to beat her. It's pretty bizarre because before facing Henin, Davenport or Jankovic, everyone here said they had their chances, but when Maria crushed them, obviously they weren't that good. Maria was he most impressive, xwith this level, she could win at least 2 GS this year but unfortunately she had an injury.

Sharapova. She beat better opposition. Serena is a close second, and I think the major reason I'm putting her behind is because her last two opponents had never won a slam.

maria sharapova at the AO--> she played such a high level, she looked unstoppeable. She beat both serbians and henin in straight sets.
When she play like that she is the best.

Sep 9th, 2008, 10:06 PM
Sharapova played her best tennis to win the AO. and did it in dominating fashion.
Then Serena who imo didn't player her best tennis but beat a lot of tough opponents.
Venus who also imo didn't play her best tennis but was the only one to defend her slam from last year and beat Serena in the final which alone is pretty impressive.
Ivanovic only cuz she didn't beat a slam champion to get there. But who cares she still won a major.

I didn't say otherwise.I just think that her draw was considered very hard when in reality those players weren't that good in this tournament. For example Serena had to beat Venus and JJ playing very well.Which player playing at a this level Maria had to beat ?

Sharapova, there is no comparison.

She crushed Dementieva, Henin, Jankovic, and Ivanovic in back to back matches where Serena beat Venus, an out of sorts Safina, and then Jankovic. It really isn't even close no matter what the Serena fangirls say.

Maria's run was overrated IMO. Davenports umbilical cord was still hanging out, Justine had retired mentally, Jankovic couldn't walk...

But on paper it was perhaps impressive. I think the USO though was the toughest slam to win.

I think it has more to do with the level of tennis she displayed rather than the standard her opponents were at. She just played dominating tennis in all 7 matches without any letdowns (which doesn't happen too often at slams). Everything functioned well for her and she was so mentally focused. Plus the win over Henin was huge considering her winning streak.

But you're right, I think Serena came through a tougher draw to win last week.

tough... I mean in hindsight really what made pova's run so impressive was destroying Henin.... but as we all know and anyone who was paying attention back then. Henin was playing like shit..... I might have to give the edge to Serena. Cause Serena did in fact beat some very in form players.....

Ana last of course

Shreiky. Serena had just as much competition but didn't thoroughly blow her opponents out like Pova did.

I don't understand why people say Squeaky got a cake walk draw at the FO, she lost a set only to Jelena and won all her other matches comfortably. She was playing well enough to win that tournament no matter who was in her draw.

Funny.. 3 of 4 slam winners this year had to beat Jankovic on their way to the title. The only exception is Venus, but she got one match short, as she could have faced Jelena in the quarters of Wimbledon, but JJ lost in the 4th round.

Also, both Ana and Serena had to face the same players, Dinara and Jelena, in their last two matches, just different order.

Renalicious
Sep 13th, 2008, 04:38 AM
I'd say Sharapova, yeah. But the final was a big letdown. Venus's run was impressive in a sense that she hadn't played well all year, hadn't played well to get to the final and then played a magnificent match to prove she's still the Queen of Grass.

Serena was impressive, but i choose Sharapova as my pick because she demolish Davenport,Dementieva,Henin,Jankovic, and Ivanovic in unbelieveable game.
she also gave a bagel to Vesnina,Dementieva, and Henin.

8 months ago I thought Masha would get close to get the Golden Slam. She seemed so stong then that I'm really a bit stunned about the outcome of the GrSl year. 4 different players again and the 5th takes the Gold Medal. Pretty balanced.

Nevertheless I acknowledge Masha's giant performance at the AO. It's been the most flawless stampede to a GrSl trophy this year.

Davenport/Dementieva/Henin/Jankovic/Ivanovic is incredible. Just insane, plus her level of play was out of this world.

Williams/Safina/Jankovic is close behind, though.

Ana and Venus' runs were fine, but they "only" had two truly quality wins per slam. Three if you want to count their surface specialist (relatively speaking) wins in the quarterfinals.

Masha's run was too good. Outstanding, stats and opponents, plus her own level of play. Her match with Henin is one of the few high quality 2 sets matches IMO of the year, involving a bagel no less.

I've to say Serena'a run is awesome too. Beating quality opposition in the final 3 rounds. Demolition of Safina!

But to me, the thing about Australia is that there's no form player for that tourney really, since most just came back from the off-season. And everyone is almost playing on level ground, which makes Masha's dominance, much more impressive.

Maria's run was overrated IMO. Davenports umbilical cord was still hanging out, Justine had retired mentally, Jankovic couldn't walk...

But on paper it was perhaps impressive. I think the USO though was the toughest slam to win.

:haha:

And anyway, whoever didn't vote for Maria are trying to kid themselves. She was scary in the AO. The only consolation I took away from the final was that Ana was neither breadsticked or bagelled, took Masha to 7-5 and got more games than anyone else including Kostanic Tosic.
