View Full Version : Race Points (Who's going to the YEC?)

Volcana
Sep 9th, 2008, 03:45 PM
Now that all the chances to get to the YEC in thousand point chunks are gone, let's see where we are. If somebody plays ever week, and wins every week, they can get about 1900 more points. Not that anyone is doing that, but the points are out there**. Recall that the YEC is 7+1, so Kuznetsova is in, while Radwanska is 'if someone else isn't sleeping with Larry Scott'. (Sharapova's out.)

For practical purposes, Serena , Jankovic, Safina, Ivanovic and Dementieva are in. There just aren't that many points out there.

Venus, if she's healthy, is probably the '+1', if she doesn't make it outright, given the she's Wimbledon champ and one of the biggest draws on the tour.

01 3680 SERENA
02 3670 JANKOVIC
03 3123 SAFINA
04 2881 IVANOVIC
05 2855 DEMENTIEVA
** 2515 SHARAPOVA
07 2106 VENUS (06)
08 2022 KUZNETSOVA (07)
-- ---- -----------
09 1945 RADWANSKA (08)
-- ---- -----------
I think, realistically, 800 points is the best anyone outside the top ten is earning this fall. And it's going to take at least 2500 to make the YEC. Those two assumptions give the following players a chance.
-- ---- -----------
10 1795 ZVONAREVA
-- ---- -----------
Yup. That's pretty much it. Radwanska vs Zvonareva for the last spot. Anyone else if probably looking at winning both the remaining Tier I's, and a Tier II, to even have a shot. But, theoretically .....

She has qualified almost every year since 1998 and has only gone twice, 1999 and 2002.

If Venus qualifies I have a feeling she'll play. She wants to try and get to top 4 so as not to run into Serena in the QFs.
But Doha :o I don't think Venus has every done well in Doha or Dubai or YEC. lol.

I'd say it is 65/35 Agnieszka gets the last place over Vera. But as others have pointed out Venus does have a tendency not to play this event and in that case both Agnieszka and Vera would get in. If, in the not too unlikely event, someone else pulls out due to injury, tiredness or disinterest I would imagine the next place would go to Caroline.

I don't think Venus will play, simply because she really never does. That puts, bleh, Aggy in. I am hopeful Zvonereva can make the cut. And always crossing my fingers for the beautiful Caro

I'm not sure about Doha, but in Dubia they have used heaver balls to try and limit power players advantage. This can cause player injuries, and I hope neither Venus or Serena plays if this is the case here. I don't like tournaments messing with the surface speed, but at least it doesn't injure the players. All tennis balls should be a STANDARD size and weight.

Sveta should just forget this season - withdraw from the YEC, sort out the issues she is going through and start early preparation for the next one

It's not unrealistic to think she won't even make the cut for Doha. You have hope, still.

I wouldn't mind TOP 8 like this

Umm...Also no you were wrong Volcana.. several players are about taped out on points.... Safina has 17 tournies.....Jankovic 16. Radwanska 18.

Its prolly just about set I'd assume. With Venus only having played 10. Kuznetsova 14. Vera is also at 18 tournies.... and shes not even really close to radwanska. Wozniaki is also taped out.

But Maria hasnt offficially pulled out yet has she? I read where she said if she's healthy I'll play... (even though we all know if she were smart she'd just sit out.)

There will be no surprise. The 8 qualified players will be the same as today's Race
Serena
Jankovic
Safina
Ivanovic
Dementieva
Venus
Kuznetsova
Radwanska

If Venus doesn't play, then Vera will take her spot

Venus will qualify and she will play, unless if she is injured. That is my opinion as I think she is motivated to make some more points now and has probably withdrawn from Tokyo to avoid fatigue.

With vera winning a title and agnieska not doing to well vera her chances for YEC are more then still alive. She's only a little more then 100 points behind. And venus is just above that, if venus decides to hardly play or goes back to errorenus both vera and agnieska will most likely pass her.

Well Aga earned 110 points for her Tokyo QF and Vera earned 140 for her title
Not a big difference;)

Venus has a heavy schedule starting in Stuttgart, then Moscow and Zurich
I think she intends to play the YEC in Doha all the more she has a trip to Nigeria planned after the YEC;)

seems to be the story of vera lately, getting in the right spot when a top player pulls out...it happened in olympics w sharapova out and now in beijing, getting a bye since safina withdrew.

Dementieva is 1-14 at the YEC since 2001 in 6 appearances. Her only win was against Chanda Rubin in 2003:help:

So are you saying that I have no valid opinion because I like someone who has a shit record at the YEC? Do I not have a brain? Can I not read results?

Again, I have nothing against you or Elena

but if I follow your logic, players who have no chance of winning a match should not qualify at the YEC:rolleyes:

Elena at least was beating the top players to get to the YEC from '03-'06 as well as '00 (5/7 appearances). Caroline's "only" beaten Svetlana and Agnieszka. She consistently makes 4R/QF and loses, and it may be enough for her.

But now it looks like she definitely won't qualify. Thank god for small favors.
