Serena has won the US Open and Miami (the "fifth slam") and made the finals of Wimbledon. That IS deserving of a # 1 next to her name

W- Venus Straight Sets :)
US OPen- Serena Straight sets all the way through

I really like that the majors and olympics were all won relatively impressively with top players stepping up.

What do you mean by no straight sets?

They all deserve it FFS.

He ment that she lost a set. One only set, that she shouldn't have lost, by the way. But it's just that Tenisstar86 can't forget about Ana at any moment. :help:

Please come back Justine.

Hey tough titty....it is what it is...Justine was loosing in 2008, she lost horribly at the Australian, Miami and in a clay tournament, then she bailed out before the French in fear of loosing her winning streak there...she couldnt handle defending her 2007 year..she burned out too fast just like Clijsters, Myskina, and a few others....yall can continue to desperately pray for justines return, but until then, the Williams sisters are going to win more slams and there will be other new champions and new #1 players in the process...Justine Henin is HISTORY...get over it! THIS IS 2008!!! Congrats to all the champs and congrats to the LEGENDARY WILLIAMS SISTERS!!! LOVE YOU SERENA WAY TO HANDLE YOUR BUSINESS TONIGHT!!! :worship:

Justine retired. She's not part of the equation.

She wasn't playing all that well in 2008, and if she was burned out enough to retire, even if only temporarily, I don't see her playing at the same level she did in 2007.

All the fan bases love to pick and choose from a time frame, but the fact is no player is always going to be able to play their best. The 2003 Serena is history. The 2007 Justine is history. I'd love to have the Olympic model Dementieva roll out for every tournament, but it isn't going to happen.

Justine deserved to be #1 in 2007, and she was. Serena, with a title from a key Tier I, a GS and a finals and quarterfinals run at the last 2 slams and the Olympics, deserves to be #1 right now. It ain't perfect, but for the most part the system works. (except for not giving Dementieva enough points for the Olympics and general adorableness).

I donīt think so. The winnner in the menīs side is determined in 3 sets, not 5 sets like the Olympic or Masters Cup Champion

Serena, Ivanovic or Jankovic are definetely the best players of the year so far. It will be interesting to see who (if not one of them) can claim the all-important year-end number 1.
