Why the hell is she trying to tell these two young women how to live their lives. Serena already dissed her in her last interview why don't these people learn and understanding that V&S are not single minded individuals.

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/09/07/weekinreview/07robbins.html?em

“I dispute the perception that the Williams sisters are only around because of these outside interests,” Carillo said. “They are around in spite of that.”

Carillo, a former professional player herself, says she believes that elite athletes should live single-mindedly and not waste time, especially when they are as talented as the Williamses.

Serena came into the Open with eight Grand Slam titles. Venus, after beating Serena at Wimbledon this year, has seven. Ten of those combined 15 major titles came by 2003.

“I thought they were going to break every record and co-own the tour forever,” Carillo said. “Take the case of Steffi Graf. Look what she left behind. She didn’t take a break.”

Graf, who turned pro at 13 and retired at 30, owns 22 career Grand Slam titles. But Venus and Serena do not talk about that record.

Carillo admits she is imposing her own narrative on them — but perhaps we do, too, if only because we are never sure who they are or what they ultimately want. For now, Serena is clear.

No one cares what Carillo has to say, everyone knows no one in the williams camp gives a flying fcuk about her opinion. This is the same person who watched Serena beat MS at the AO and at the end of the match say, "I still think Maria is the better player" ... which just proves she struggles with accepting the reality of what is right in front of her face. :tape:

I thought everyone in the media are past that time when they bashed Williams sisters for reason or no reason. Isn't it like SOOOOOO yesterday?

We should appreciate them still playing and not question why and how, etc. Let's just enjoy it.

She contradicts herself so much it's not even funny.

"Serena's skills are in decline"

"Sharapova is the better player"

Yet somehow we're supposed to believe that all along she thought Serena was capable of, and was looking forward to watching her surpass Graf's achievements.

It's a cheap backhanded compliement by Carillo at best. She should just concentrate on commentating on the match.

Now, back to reality, Carillo… Williams Sisters are on the court, trying to do their best (as Serena stated explicitly in her most recent interview) and winning matches. Her tiresome obsession with Serena and Venus clearly needs to be cured, urgently!

It's really disturbing how much Mary Carillo is obsessed with Venus and Serena not playing more tennis and having outside interests. She can't have a discussion about the sisters without being upset with their decision to do what make them happy.

As a Williams fan, I wanted them to play more. But I got over it, because I realized a long time ago that it was not my decision to make. I couldn't control their lives and tell them what to do. Now, seeing how Carillo continues to bash them over the years at every opportunity she gets for not playing more, I'm convinced more than ever before that if I were the sisters, I wouldn't want to play more tennis either. Having to read and hear her complaints constantly wouldn't encourage me to be anywhere near close to her.

And this is the same woman who was one of the first critics/commentators to say that "Venus and Serena were bad for tennis" when they were dominating. Something is definitely wrong with her. She needs to get some help to get over this obsession, because the sisters are not going to change their way of life to please her or anyone else.

Serena's been great this year, showed up at way more tounraments than it's ever seemed, for her, and she's one win away from the World #1. How much more can you want from her?

And all these comments she makes here are so rehashed and are just old news.
It's upsetting, because I really do think Serena is doing a lot better, but I'm worried all this criticism is going to turn Serena off from continuing to play so often.

according to Carillo;

They're bad for tennis.
Their matches are fixed.
They don't play enough to suit her.
They're not successful enough.

Ok, got it Mary. I think the term 'hater' was coined just for you.

Even if they did everything just to please her...that still wouldn't please her. She find something new to criticise them for...then she'd criticise them for following her advice! Enough will never be enough for her.

This is nothing new with that idiot Carillo-she periodically pisses off players with her inane comments. It's not just the Williams sisters. Federer, Agassi and Graf aren't fans of her either, as she's said some things about them that they didn't like :haha: The Federer comment was when he lost to Murray in Cincinatti in 2006. Roger went off on her to the press after hearing that Carillo said he "tanked" the match :haha:

You are exactly right! I just don't understand what is so difficult to understand about this statement that they have repeatedly made when questioned about this:

Q. Do you want to catch Steffi Graf?

SERENA WILLIAMS: ... you know, my goal has never been to have the most. My goal has always been to have the best time and do the best I can do.

Clearly they treat tennis as part of their lives but not as their lives. That is one of the reasons why they delayed being on the tour as early as most of their peers and finished high school so that they will not have to cut their careers short in order to go back to school.

In retrospect they have made the right decisions and it worked for them in comparison to the others who were praised for their myopic commitment to tennis. Mary and co. should just admit that they have all been wrong about the Williams family and move on. Let it go Mary because this is a battle you are never going to win.

She just has such a negative, cock-sure attitude. She acts like her opinion is universally applauded and she always like to portray Venus and Serena as the cheap elements of the WTA, while Sharapova, Ivanovic etc are the real icons of the game:rolleyes:

She has to win another 15 more slams to do that, 14 if she wins tomorrow.

The earliest she could complete that would be if she won every single slam from now until the Australian Open of 2012, by which time she'd be 30.

As near to impossible as it gets.

Although Carillo talks a load of trash much of the time, along with the likes of Austin and Mary Jo (we get the same rubbish over here, except our commentary boxes are filled by such luminaries as Sam Smith, Jo Durie, Chris Bailey, John Lloyd), I do think she has a point.

Venus and Serena, like Graf and Navratilova before that, and to go even further back, Court before that, were athletic phenomenons with the potential to cement their places in the record books.

While Serena and Venus' achievements have been considerable, when placed among the legends their records are patchy, inconsistent, their dedication questionable, and ultimately, their numbers are just not anywhere near what would be required to be placed in that league.

So while nothing should be taken away from Venus or Serena for what they have achieved, they could have done so much more. Serena in particular has wasted far more chances than she's taken.

The reason why I find it hard to believe that these commentators are truly concern about the sister's legacy is that I have not seen the same comments about and towards Jennifer Capriati. Now if you want to talk about wasted opportunity she is the perfect case. It's not like the sisters walked away from the game and were doing drug and not doing anything productive to benefit them when their tennis lives are over.Maybe having a successful tennis career and being able to pursuit their other passion is enough for them. Not everyone has to have 22Grand slam to feel their lives were successful. I am quite sure Kim Clijsters feels just as ful-filled with 1 slam as someone with a few more. There are many millionaires out there who are very unhappy and people who make just enough who are quite contented with their livess. We need to stop assuming that because we feel that having the most grand slam is what every player see as the ultimate goal.
Who would have thought that winning a gold medal was more important to Elena Dementieva than a grand slam?
