Despite Russia's Fed Cup and Olympic "domination", they haven't been able to convert this into slams.

We were told 4 years ago that the youngsters were teenagers and are still coming up and the prophesy will be fulfilled soon.

But it's the end of 2008 grand slam season and since 2004 only Maria Sharapova has won grand slams: two.

What do you guys think? Are these women a bunch of patriots who can only bring out their best Fed Cup and Olympics or do the rest of the players just don't care about Fed Cup and Olympics (and they have the numbers and will to shine there)?

Russia is fine on its own name. Myskina won a slam and Kuzzie won a slam. Maria isn't Russian by even the Russians. I actually think Russia is fine. They have Elena D who is remaing a patriot by remaining in her country. She owns 2 medals.

You're basing this thread on your personal opinion. It's natural though. Russia is fine with or without Masha S.

P.S. You know what is so ironic????????? Anna Kournikova still after watching all these Russian girls has the most talent of them all. She was a true all-court player. Had a great feel of the net, decent groundies. Not just a hit the ball hard player but had an arsenal of a plan A and B. A true net volleyer. Yet she never won a title.

I still get so ticked at how she handled her career. If you look at her game compared to the rest of the Russians she actually has more weapons and a better sense of the game.

I think Sharapova is good, but Russia could survive without her. She practically never plays Fed Cup, wasn't in the Olympics (and Russia still won all 3 singles medals). Russia still has lots of youngsters on the way that are constantly improving. This year more than ever I think the Russians have picked it up a level and not just Sharapova, but Dementieva, Safina, Zvonareva have all had outstanding results. They play incredibly consistent tennis, there's always 2 or more russians in the quarters and I can't remember the last time there wasnt at least one in the semi's of a slam. Sure, they may not be winning all the grand slams, but look at other areas of the tour such as Tier I's and Tier II's and you'll notice Russian players are winning lots of these. In 2006 Russian players won 8/10 Tier I tournaments. This year there has been at least one Russian in 6 out of the 8 Tier I finals played.
