Hi Guys :wavey:

Not too long now until the US Open starts so thought we could begin chatting and debating over Aga's chances :)

As always I am going to say her chances are high but lately there has been a dip in form and injurys, both of which could jeapordise her chances here this year. What do you guys think?

Such great memorys here last year though, would love to see Aga achieve great things at Flushing Meadows once more :worship:

I see 4th round

olivero
Aug 20th, 2008, 10:24 PM
it depends on the draw, but I hope finally a semifinal :D;)

Yet, considering Aga's last two tournaments, I think 4th round would be pretty good performance.

Depending on the draw, I think that the 4th Round is a realistic goal at this time (i.e. keeping her points from last year and beating everyone her rank says she should).

Very good draw for Agnieszka! :D

1r - Qualifer
2r - Tanasugarn

A bad draw. With her high seed I can't think of a worse one.

Both of the Williams sisters in her quarter, and Cibulková in the 3rd round. I am pretty sure the Williamses are hungry for revenge after the Olympics. Especially Serena. And Flushing Meadows is their home, so to speak.

The things would look different if she hasn't wasted last two months. I would much prefer Agnieszka to be in the place of Zvonareva who's got much easier draw.

Just reaching a Quarter-Final would be a very tall order. I wouldn't be surprised if she doesn't defend even her points from the last year. Cibulková is much more dangerous than the veteran Schiavone.

And Chakvetadze is in the New Haven Final. Agnieszka should be there.

Well, I was wrong with MDLB, but I hoped that Aga would finally get her revenge ;)

Irute
Aug 23rd, 2008, 04:35 PM
Aga doesn't need her revenge right. She is trying to stabilize herself in the new setting of a top tenner. It is difficult enough to deal with experimenting with the schedule, addressing existing gaps in her game and the pressure of everyone's expectations. Any additional pressure is undesirable.

Unfortunately, a former 'top tenner'.

Frankly, I think nobody in the forum can realistically say what kind of Agnieszka are we going to see at Flushing Meadows.

No career develops in a straight line. It is very much like mountain climbing. Sometimes you have to go sideways or backwards to gain better footing or find better path. You need to over stretch some muscles weakening them temporarily to be better and stronger later. I am not disappointed with Aga at all. You are all correct; we don't know her for USO; in general though she is on the right course. Go Aga!

Always happens. At Wimbledon Aga played Iveta Benesova 1st round and Niculescu played Rybarikova.

Yeah that's the thing. I want Aga to at least defend her points (and then go even further of course) but Yari needs these points too and want her to get at least 60 points here. It is just a bummer. All I can say is may the best girl win and of course I hope Aga is fully recovered from her arm problems. I don't want any tainted victories.

Oh and of course I will get 100% behind to winner after the 1st round.

Hard to complain about the draw though when Agnieszka and Ula ceased to have any successes in the doubles recently. And last year the future for the sisterly doubles looked so rosy (especially after their victory in Istanbul).

To be honest, I can't remember. I believe it was though. I don't recall Aga hitting a winner.

I really hope she's going to warm up... I was affraid for a while that a slump may hit her soon. I really hope it is not it!

Although the first round of the U.S. Open may not be the best time to experiment, she's going to eventually need to learn how to win when she's not playing her best.

And what a point at 0-15! Great drop shot by Aga.

Okay, breadsticks are also acceptable. :p

Agnieszka broken: YS effective at the net. AR on her serve is too easily forced into defensive.

Nothing we didn't know, really. It's the single part of her game that needs the most work. Having never seen her play in person, I'm not exactly sure what the problem is. She uses a kick serve, but when it lands short / is slow, it sits right up into the returners strike zone. Her form is also questionable: it seems as though her weight transfers from her right leg to left leg (hence the right leg crossing over) while it should go from left to left. If you watch some of the best servers (Serena, Federer, Sampras), they transfer their weight from left to left.

Thanks olivero! In retrospect, I have an impression that Agnieszka may have been helping Yaroslava to make so many errors. This is one of her trademarks, isn't it? From a distance it may often look as an inexplicable stream of errors by Agnieszka's opponents. In reality many of these errors result from Agnieszka's game.

Interesting observations. Would love some experts to discuss it in greater detail. Today her serve was particularly vulnerable. She rarely gets broken to love. Today she was in two consecutive service games -- she set probably some kind of personal record.

A relevant excerpt from an excellent report by Pam Shriver.

(...)

The highlight of my day was scrambling back and forth between Courts 11 and 14 with Radwańska and Shvedova as well as Hsieh versus Rodina. Rodina looks like the lovechild of Davenport and Woźniak and plays like Woźniak on crack. After five straight days of ball bashing it was so nice to see the crafty touch of Aga and Hsieh. Hsieh's hands are just amazing and she knows it, ballsy dropshots and dropvolleys out of no where that she had no business trying. Aga was humiliating Shvedova and it was a lot of fun to watch. Ultimately all of Aga's cat and mouse wound up being too much for Yaro as she fell and called for a trainer, mind you she was panting like a sheepdog in Miami by this point. I hadn't thought much of Aga before today but she really won me over.

and here is my reply in her thread

Tennis writing of the highest caliber, Pam. An unmitigated pleasure to read. I just wish more Tennis Forum members realize that here is something to learn from and to be set as an example to emulate...

I notice that we both share 'distaste for bashing'. Your observations on Radwańska vs. Shvedova both fresh and unexpected. I fell in love with Agnieszka's game a few months ago, and I admit I may be spoiled by what I saw from her in the past -- except for two consecutive games in the 2nd set which resulted in Shvedova calling for a break, Agnieszka looked to me as if she just disembarked at the nearby JFK Airport from an intercontinental flight. It's true that I was watching her on a computer screen, and you watched her playing being there, thus your impressions should be trusted not mine. Still, I saw Agnieszka on several occasions this year playing breathtakingly well.

...and Pam's response

You know what, you are right on with that observation, those two games are so stuck in my head because it was just such wonderful tennis that I kind of generalized as that being Aga's level throughout. This is especially true because I was going back and forth between her and Hsieh so I think I might have assumed that she was consistently playing at that level throughout, however she was much less shiny after the injury timeout though I do recall a few lovely dropshots. She is such a breath of fresh air and I hope she can get some more going on her second serve and push into the top five.

'I hope she can get some more going on her second serve and push into the top five'

...to which I say 'Amen'.

Relieved to hear that. Playing bad is not bad if you know that you play bad and you can't stand it. Pretending that everything is fine, saying that 'life goes on', 'she is not a robot', and that 'everybody has weak days' is bad. That's what separates excellence from mediocrity (and Agnieszka is in my eyes invested with excellence -- I wouldn't be here otherwise).

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I almost never see Aga smile or have "dynamics" on court. The only time I've seen her smile while playing a singles match is after a bad line call (a look like "Are you kidding me?) and I believe I saw her give "that look" in the match against Shvedova.

That's right. Agnieszka is focused in matches she plays. Yesterday, nevertheless, she seemed a bit depressed, so I agree with Martin, there was little 'dynamics' (I jokingly compared her to somebody who just disembarked from an intercontinental flight). The marvelous two games that brought down Shvedova, and impressed and delighted Pam Shriver so much, were an exception.

I base my hope on conviction that an out-of-form player cannot play so well even for two games in a row. She did. And this gives me hope.

i think the situation is totally reverse.

domi has to play her very best to beat aga, she does not have any lethal weapons to kill aga (like some ballbashers do) and just pushing the ball to the other side of the net won't do the trick if aga plays anywhere near her average.

I have the following question: when was the last time that Agnieszka+Ula did not lose in the first round of a big tournament (grand slam)?

They've played together in such tournaments just twice. First in FO 2008 when they lost after 3 hours long battle to AMG/VRP (who later won the whole tournament). Second time here, lost in 3 sets to olympic medalists. That's a good point they have great potential and should play together more often. :yeah:
