Draw is okay. Anna could do very well here. Then again she could fall early. She's been presented with so-called easy draws already this year and been unable to take advantage. There's a few tricky customers in there but no-one an in-form Anna couldn't handle. With the big names missing Anna needs to get some good results this week.

Tennis a release for Chakvetadze
By David Borges, Register Staff 08/18/2008

NEW HAVEN — She says that it’s no longer an issue, totally out of her thoughts.

Anna Chakvetadze insists that the brutal invasion of her Moscow home by several masked burglars last December is simply a thing of the past.

“I did put it behind me,” Chakvetadze said on Sunday. “I don’t think about it anymore.”

But there will always be reminders of the incident for Chakvetadze, the 21-year-old Russian tennis standout.

The physical scars have healed. Chakvetadze’s hands were tied so tightly with rope during the robbery that she lost feeling in the fingers of her left hand and couldn’t hold a racket for about 10 days afterward. But she rebounded to win her seventh WTA title — the Open Gaz in Paris — two months later.

However, the increased bodyguards and elaborate alarm systems in her home offer constant reminders that things will never really be the same since the night of Dec. 18, 2007.

Six armed robbers broke into the home Chakvetadze shared with her parents that night, tying the three of them up and beating Chakvetadze’s father, Jamal. They stole roughly $202,000 in money and valuables, according to reports, and have yet to be apprehended.

But despite rumors that the robbers have vowed to return, Chakvetadze has not left Russia — and, in fact, hasn’t even moved out of the house.

Continued from C1

“I wanted to move, but my parents didn’t want to,” Chakvetadze said. “They wanted to stay, so we stayed.”

Tennis has been Chakvetadze’s greatest release from the incident. Unable to practice for a few weeks afterward, she figured she probably wouldn’t be able to play in January’s Australian Open — perhaps her favorite Grand Slam event. But she recovered in time to compete in the event, falling in the third round to fellow Russian Maria Kirilenko.

A few weeks later, Chakvetadze defeated Hungary’s Agnes Szavay in Paris. Currently ranked No. 10 in the world, she’s the top seed in this week’s Pilot Pen Tennis tournament.

Chakvetadze has earned a first-round bye and won’t begin play until Tuesday or Wednesday, but she’s looking forward to her third trip to the Pilot Pen.

“It’s a good tournament to get some confidence back and play some matches before a Grand Slam event,” Chakvetadze said.

Chakvetadze elected not to participate in the Beijing Olympics, but was glad to see her fellow Russians collect plenty of gold medals in tennis. Instead, she practiced out in Los Angeles for the past couple of weeks.

“Of course the Olympics are something different, but I just didn’t go there because I thought the U.S. Open was more important for me,” Chakvetadze said. “So, hopefully, I’ll play well in New York.”

That would certainly go a long way toward putting that Dec. 18 home invasion behind her. But first, Chakvetadze has some business to attend to in New Haven.

Chakvetadze downs Dellacqua at New Haven
August 21, 2008 - 2:22PM

Top seed Anna Chakvetadze has ousted Casey Dellacqua from the New Haven ATP tournament in straight sets.
Russian Chakvetadze won 6-4 6-4 against the Australian women's No.1 in the second round, despite 11 double faults.
"I lost my rhythm a little bit on my serve because of the wind in the first set," Chakvetadze said. "I couldn't find it in the second, as well. But still, I was fighting to the end and I'm pleased with this win."
Chakvetadze, ranked No.8 in the world, is looking for her second title this year. The Paris indoors winner advanced to her fourth quarter-final this season.

I just woke up and saw that Anna is into the final. Good news to start my day! :yeah:  It's really great to see her make a final again. I was starting to have doubts it was ever going to happen again this year.

My thoughts on the final...Wozniacki is my favorite among the youngsters coming up on tour and she is a very solid player and I love how show anticipates every shot. She won't overpower Anna but she can beat her with consistency. If Anna starts over hitting and gets too impatient in the rallies it may cost her the match. Overall though of Anna is focused and plays her game she can beat Wozniacki. She has more experience in finals and should take advantage of that. I really hope she wins, I believe she needs this win more than Wozniacki does to have some confidence as the US Open comes up.

Aug 23rd, 2008, 11:33 AM
NEW HAVEN - If Amelie Mauresmo was the overwhelming fan favorite on the women's side of the Pilot Pen Tennis tournament, Anna Chakvetadze had an on-court moment Friday night with which nearly all of the 6,158 fans in attendance could relate.

Awaiting at the net to smash back a high lob return from Mauresmo late in the third set, Chakvetadze swung and missed at the ball. Just plain swung and missed.

"I just lost the ball in the sky, I don't know how it happened," she said afterwards. "It was not that difficult a shot."

She rebounded in time to twirl around and fire a backhand off the bounce - straight into the net. It was a comical moment, one which even Chakvetadze was even able to laugh at. It was also one of her few mistakes of the night.

Utilizing a powerful - if inconsistent - serve and a deft backhand, Chakvetadze topped Mauresmo, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1, in a semifinal match at Stadium Court. Chakvetadze, the women's top seed, advances to today's finals (1 p.m., CBS), where she'll face unseeded Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark.

"Of course I'm pleased (advancing)," she said, "but I look forward to taking the title." Chakvetadze has never played Wozniacki, but she's certainly no stranger to reaching the finals of an event. To this point, she's a perfect 7-for-7 in championship matches, most recently winning indoors at Paris in February.

She can't explain her success in finals.

"I have no idea," Chakvetadze said. "I just play and concentrate during all my finals. Hopefully it will be the same (today)."

Interestingly, a concentration lapse in the second set kept Chakvetadze from dispatching Mauresmo more easily. After winning the first set rather handily, she fell behind in the second, 5-1, and never recovered.

"I lost a bit of concentration in the beginning of the second set, then I started to play better but it was too late, she was up 5-1," Chakvetadze said. "I don't know why it was like that. I hope it won't be like that again."

It's those lapses in concentration, according to Mauresmo, that is keeping Chakvetadze (currently ranked No. 10 in the world) from reaching greater heights.

"Mentally today, she went down a little bit in the second set. I guess she will have to raise these moments," Mauresmo said. "Her serve, also - there were a few double faults there (nine for the match). But it's very hard to say the way she's going to evolve and grow up a little bit in her game, and mentally. It's difficult to know if she's going to be able to put things together and really focus the way she has to to get to that No. 1 spot. It's going to be hard."

Mauresmo knows what it's like being there. She was ranked No. 1 throughout most of 2006, winning both the Australian Open and Wimbledon, but has battled injuries and illness since then and has tumbled out of the top 30. Her performance this week gives her hope that she's on the comeback trail.

"I think I got a little bit of confidence back, showing that I can definitely play this type of game against great players," she said. "So, I'm happy about that. I was always asking myself for a while, especially at the end of last year, if I was going to be able to physically and mentally feel the way I felt before. I'm happy that this week, I found that again."

There's little question the Pilot Pen has lost its star attraction on the women's side.

Mauresmo, who will face fellow Frenchwoman Nathalie Dechy in the first round of next week's U.S. Open, said she simply ran out of gas after playing a couple of lengthy three-set matches earlier in the week.

"I would have loved to play the last match (today), but it's a good tournament (for me)," Mauresmo said. "I'm pretty satisfied about the week and the way I played throughout the week. Tonight was a little bit tough to produce some good level of tennis, not being good enough physically."

Chakvatadze has overcome injuries, as well. A harrowing invasion of her Moscow home left her with injuries to her hand that kept her from practicing much of the winter. In March, injuries to her rib and abdomen kept her from reaching her peak.

"Every year is different," she reasoned. "Of course I felt I'd play better this year, but I still have some time to show some good results."

No better time like this afternoon.

Wozniacki advanced by defeating France's Alize Cornet 7-5, 6-4 in a semifinal battle of 18-year-olds Friday afternoon at Stadium Court. Wozniacki broke Cornet's serve to clinch the first set, then fought back from a 3-0 deficit in the second.

"I was trying to play my style of play," Wozniacki said, "because I knew if I let her decide the points, it would be real difficult for me to win."

Anna's not playing that badly in some respects, but she's still mistiming and hitting way too many unforced errors... she's at 49 or 50 now... and doesn't have 40-50 winners to at least neutralise the errors a bit. Anna needs to win this 1-2 service game...

Looks over now - credit to Caroline who has really tightened her game and asked the questions of Anna... but Anna has to find a way to stop melting when in charge of these sorts of matches. Anna hits flat and tries for the lines. It's a high risk baseline game.
It's those swinging volley and overhead errors, and all those 1st serve faults. She can improve that real quick

It's not that bad a loss. Now comes a much bigger tournament, and maybe the loss will have Anna more focused. She shouldn't be too confident because she's making too many UE's. She needs to focus better, and play smarter.

I'm trying not to be too disappointed about this loss. Wozniacki is a solid and fast improving player so it's not really a big upset that she beat Anna. Plus as I said before I didn't think Anna will make a final again this year but she did so I see this as a good sign for the US Open as she seems to be finally getting back on track with her game. :)

Unfortunately my prediction is good and Caroline win the Tournament.

But we have some positive facts for Anna, she plays better now and starts again to win the Matches she has to win, with players like Cirstea or Dellacqua, she makes so many errors in this 2nd set, but still can remain in the Match until the 4-4, and Anna gain good points for the rankings, I hope she can reach at least the 4th Round at US Open, with this nice draw.

Chakvetadze - who had only dropped one set en route to the final, to resurgent former world No.1 Amélie Mauresmo in the semifinals - had all of the numbers on her side as she prepared for the title match. Although she had never played Wozniacki she had far more experience, having been as high as No.5 in the world before and enjoying some of her best career results on summer hardcourts; she was also 7-0 lifetime in finals, a perfect record that included one winning final performance earlier this year, beating Agnes Szavay at Paris [Indoors].

Chakvetadze won the first set of the final, 6-3, in just 39 minutes, then broke for a 1-0 lead in the second set, seemingly on her way to 8-0. But that was when Wozniacki came alive, cutting down on her unforced errors and taking control of more of the points. The Danish upstart fought back to win the second set, 6-4, then cruised through the third set in 25 minutes to complete a 36 64 61 victory.

"Anna was playing really aggressive; I was playing into her game too," Wozniacki said. "I was thinking, if I win this tournament I have to play my own game, and make her do the things I want her to do. I realized I'd lose if I didn't change something anyway, so I just tried to change my tactics. And it worked."

"I didn't recover from yesterday's match well enough," said Chakvetadze, whose semifinal match against Mauresmo was played Friday night. "I just didn't have enough power, especially in the third set. It's quite important that you're able to run and fight on the court. If you can't do that, you're going to lose."

Although she ended up without the title, Chakvetadze still had some positives to take away from New Haven.

"I won quite a few matches and I'm actually pleased with my game, except for today," said Chakvetadze, who hadn't reached a final since Paris [Indoors] in February. "If I compare the way I played to one month ago, it's much better. I'm looking forward to playing the US Open. It's the most important tournament. I'll get a day off in between each match so hopefully I can stay fresh for each one."

here a interesting interview of anna after her match against Mauresmo

Anna Chakvetadze

NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT

A. CHAKVETADZE/A. Mauresmo
6-3, 3-6, 6-1

THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.

Q. The tape on your leg, just preventive?
ANNA CHAKVETADZE: It was just for support. Just protection. Didn't bother me.

Q. Seemed like a good first set and good third set tonight.
ANNA CHAKVETADZE: Yeah, I lost a bit concentration in the beginning of the second set, then I felt I started to play better. But it was too late. Already she was up like 5-1. I won two more games.
But I am still pleased with the third set.

Q. Is there something that made you lose your concentration in the second set?
ANNA CHAKVETADZE: No, I don't know why it was like that. I hope it wouldn't be again like that.

Q. She thinks if you work on that part of your game, potentially No. 1 can be in the future for you.
ANNA CHAKVETADZE: Well, that's my goal.

Q. Do you still feel that's part of the game you need to work on?
ANNA CHAKVETADZE: Yeah, definitely.

Q. How about the overhead?
ANNA CHAKVETADZE: Oh, my gosh. I just lost the ball in the sky. I don't know how it happened. Just was not that difficult shot, you know.

Q. A couple weeks before you'd played; a couple weeks off.
ANNA CHAKVETADZE: Yeah, I was practicing in L.A. with my coach. I feel much better after that.

Q. Feel like you're getting better match by match right now?
ANNA CHAKVETADZE: Yeah, definitely.

Q. Last year you had a great season. How were you feeling last year at this time compared to now? Can you compare?
ANNA CHAKVETADZE: Yeah, every year is different. Of course I thought that I gonna play better this year than last year, but unfortunately it didn't happen.
I still have some time to show good results, and I look forward to that.

Q. Do you remember the last time you swung and missed at a shot like that? Doesn't happen very often, I take it.
ANNA CHAKVETADZE: No, not really. I just remember last time my hair got stuck in the racquet. That's it (laughter).

Q. Did you feel more pressure going into the season compared to what you did last year?
ANNA CHAKVETADZE: No, not really. I just lost my confident [sic] a bit, yeah, in the first of the season. I had two injuries in one month, and it was tough time for me.
But, as I said, I look forward to get in the shape again.

Q. What were the injuries?
ANNA CHAKVETADZE: It was my rib and abdominal.

Q. When was this?
ANNA CHAKVETADZE: When is Dubai?
THE MODERATOR: March.
ANNA CHAKVETADZE: Yeah, right.

Q. A couple injuries this year?
ANNA CHAKVETADZE: Right.

Q. You had to overcome nine double-faults. Do you take some confidence you were able to do that or are you disappointed in yourself that you had so many?
ANNA CHAKVETADZE: No, of course I should serve better tomorrow definitely because I think Wozniacki plays more aggressive than Amélie does. Have to put more first serves in.

Q. You're 7-0 in finals. What's the reason for that?
ANNA CHAKVETADZE: I have no idea actually (laughter). I just play very concentrate during all my finals. And I hope it will be the same tomorrow.

Q. Is this the first of the finals where you've been the older player?
ANNA CHAKVETADZE: Oh, come on. I'm not that old. I'm only 21 (laughter).
Yeah, there are a lot of players who are like younger than me, three, four years even younger. We have Russian girls who are four years younger.

Q. I mean in a final.
ANNA CHAKVETADZE: Yeah, she's a good player. So I look forward to play her.

Q. Have you ever played her at all?
ANNA CHAKVETADZE: Actually, I never played her.

Q. Are you pleased to get to the final?
ANNA CHAKVETADZE: Yeah, of course I'm pleased. But I look forward to take the title.

Q. Were you having problems with the sponsor thing on your shirt? I thought you had an injury, but is that what you were tapping down?
ANNA CHAKVETADZE: Yeah, because I wet. It was sticking off. It didn't bother me actually. I get used to it.

Q. What is your coaching situation? You're with Lansdorp?
ANNA CHAKVETADZE: Yeah, he gonna come to New York. He didn't come here this week because he couldn't. But I'm here with my dad. And things are going really well with Robert, and I like to practice with him.

Q. Are you still advised by Carlos Rodriguez?
ANNA CHAKVETADZE: No, not any more.

Q. I read somewhere you had Georgian roots. Do you have any family still there?
ANNA CHAKVETADZE: My dad does.

Q. How are things going down there? Does your father keep in touch with anyone down there?
ANNA CHAKVETADZE: Yeah, he keeps in touch. I think we're not here to talk about politics. Our family is feeling okay. They're living in Tbilisi, the capital. They're feeling fine.
