Hey guys, so I just got home from todays singles action and there was a lot of good tennis being played today. I figured I would just give you the details on the matches I saw (and the ones I know you guys are interested in).

1. Brodsky def. Stephens 6-4, 2-6, 6-4

First off, the site reported the score wrong, it was actually 6-4 in the third. I was really excited to see this match because I think Sloane is truly something special at 15. This match did not disappoint. Gail came out firing in the first set and her groundies were just painting the lines and although Sloane was very steady from the baseline, there was nothing she could do about Gail's laser ground-strokes. Gail went up 5-2. Sloane held for 3-5, and then broke Gail for 4-5 and then they were back on serve. But Gail got it together to break Sloane for a 6-4 set. The second set was an entirely different story. Gail's usually penetrating ground-strokes were finding the bottom of the net! She was all over the place and really did not play well at all. Thus Sloane's steady play won her the second set 6-2. Starting with the third set both girls were playing very well and there were some amazing baseline rallies. With Gail up 4-3, Sloane was serving and saved several break points to prevent getting broken. Gail then held at love for 5-4. The last game of the match was by far the best. Both girls playing their absolute best. However after saving one match point, a forehand in the net from Sloane gave Gail the break, and thus the match. Great playing girls!

I watched all of this match from start to finish, so I was unable to see any really of the Ahn def. Damico.
However...

2. Ahn def. Damico

I saw of Ahn's match yesterday and she was hitting the ball very well off the ground. Whenever I looked over at this match Damico was always losing the point due to an unforced error. This match was over very quickly and Ahn barley had broken a sweat when I saw her after the match.

3. Falconi def. Guarchi

This match directly followed Ahn's match and was going on during the third set of the Brodsky match. I was not interested in this match as I am not impressed by Falconi. So I cannot comment on this one, however I did hear Guarchi talking after the match about how it was really difficult for her mentally to play Falconi and that that had a big part in her loss.

4. C McHale def. Gibbs (6-3, 6-4)

I left while this match was still in the first set. I was mad I could not see more of it as they have had good matches in the past.

5. Cecil def. L McHale

Ok, biggest  of the day! Mchale was up a 6-2, 5-3 and serving!!! I was surprised that McHale even got out to this lead, as i think Cecil is the better player, but once up by such a margin, I thought for sure McHale would close it out. Cecil really took it too another level and showed how good she really can play!

6. Vandeweghe def. Bolender

CoCo was really on today! Her serve was unstoppable, she had one game where she blasted 4 aces in a row. A routine win today for CoCo over a very solid player. CoCo is really playing herself into this tournament.

7. Boserup def. Hampton

This was an absolute shalacking! Boserup was killing her ground-strokes and really pummeling Hampton from the baseline. As usual, Hampton was bitching up a storm. I was really impressed with Boserup, she played very very well today!

8. Muhammad def. Janowicz (6-2, 6-1)

I did not see any of this match

More reports tomorrow!

You didn't miss much, Robert. It was every bit as one-sided as the score indicated. It looks like a Muhammad-Vandeweghe semifinal Saturday, and I won't be able to see it.

By the way, Patrick McEnroe was there today.

I've heard Sloane is more or less just a pusher/moonballer. Did she still play that way or does she variation in her game where she goes for winners?

Gail :D
Mallory  :)
Coco :yeah:
Julia  :worship: I thought Jamie might get this, due to Julia seemingly in poor form as of late. I think she could give Asia a run for her money tomorrow.

Coco vs. Asia would be nice though considering these two are apparently not so fond of each other.

Coco vs Asia will be a cracking match. Please let it happens.

And Iwe want the story behind the lovefest between Co and Asia.

1. Sloane is definitely not a pusher/moonballer. Although she does not hit the ball as hard as Gail or CoCo, for her stature and age she hits the ball very very well. Perhaps someone might refer to her as a pusher do to the fact that she makes very little unforced errors and keeps the ball in play...but she keeps the ball in play with a very good amount of pace. I think the game-plan against Gail today was to make Gail hit a lot of balls, because as shown by the second set, Gail is prone to making her fair share of unforced errors. With improved acceleration and aggression, Sloane is certainly someone to watch out for. As someone who watches a whole lot of junior tennis, I was very impressed.

2. I am looking forward to seeing the Asia vs. Julia Boserup match tomorrow, because Julia played unbelievable in her match against Hampton. I too think Asia will have her hands full!

3. I am curious as too where you heard the information about the CoCo and Asia not liking eachother? But it is true I have not seem them talk to eachother this whole tournament. Asia has been with her mom (and a few other juniors but primarily faye :hearts:) and CoCo has been with her coach. Both very serious about this tournament :yeah:

4. For all those interested in the CoCo vs. Asia battle (myself included, also I am going to be verrrry upset if Boserup or Cecil ruins my perfect semi) I will be there to document every moment of it upon my return! I am also hoping to take pictures! :bounce:

Back with more updates tomorrow!

In response to questions about the winning doubles team earning a MD WC into the US Open, they do! :yeah: Jamie Hampton and Melanie Oudin earned that WC last year by winning the tournament. Unfortunately they lost first round at the Open to Chan/Chuang (eventually finalists) 6-1,6-1.

So now for my synopsis of todays matches...

Brodsky Def. Ahn

I only saw the end of this match, but can guess that Gail probably suffered one of her error filled sets in the second to lose it 6-0.

Vandeweghe def. Cecil

Good display from both girls, CoCo was just better on the bigger points

Boserup def. Muhammad

I watched all of this match, and was crushed when Asia lost  She had her chances, but unfortuantley Boserup played way to well today. Boserup played amazingly well from the baseline and really put the pressure on Asia. CoCo will have her hands full tomorrow, and I expect a lot of very hard hitting rallies.

Also, news/rumors from around the grounds today is that CoCo Vandeweghe signed a 1 Million dollar contract with IMG.

Well done Julia. :worship:

I knew this girl had talent...but she's been having some pathetic results on the ITF tour lately. :o Her vs. Coco should definitely be a good match and I expect the winner of that match to win the final as well.

Gail has loads more experience from juniors and pro circuits s and it showed. Coco made way too many unforced errors and needs to really focus on learning how to construct points...she has a ways to go. US Open will be a great experience for Gail but it's unlikely she can win a match against top 100 players.
