View Full Version : Alicia in Beijing!

Aug 2nd, 2008, 11:17 AM
This is without a doubt the biggest event on Alicia Molik's schedule this year.

Here's hoping for a significant improvement in Beijing compared to Alicia's post-January 08 slump. Alicia is playing in her third olympics and is the only singles medal winner from Athens playing this year. She is entered in singles via an ITF Wildcard but her main chance at a medal is in the doubles where she will partner an inform Casey Dellacqua.

Good Luck Alicia!!!!

Dellacqua on a double missionLinda Pearce | August 1, 2008

CASEY Dellacqua and Alicia Molik will fly to Beijing together on Monday, just as they have shared a practice court at Melbourne Park in recent days and will combine in doubles at Molik's second Olympics and Dellacqua's first.

But there the common ground ends, as a breakthrough year for one has been a difficult time for the other.

Still, this is what Molik has been waiting for, and wanting so badly, despite needing an ITF wildcard to achieve it, and Dellacqua is well aware that her friend and Fed Cup teammate rates her singles bronze medal from Athens four years ago as the highlight of her career.

"I've spoken to the other girls that have been before, and they've just said it's such an amazing time, and I'm definitely going to march at the opening ceremony and soak up all that, and then get out there and experience the tennis, see what the courts are like, see how they're playing — and then just really look forward to seeing how the draw goes and getting out there and playing for Australia," Dellacqua said yesterday.

"Looking at my grand slam history this year so far, realistically I should be looking to win at least a few rounds. Once you get there and put on the green and gold, anything can happen.

"I've had a really good preparation. I had a bit of a shoulder (injury), but I'm over that and I've just been training really hard, so if I go out first round I'll be disappointed."

Dellacqua's singles ranking has halved this year to 39th, easily the best among the Australian women, on the back of a fourth-round showing at the Australian Open and third-round appearances at the French Open and Wimbledon. She has already achieved her year-end goal of a top 50 ranking.

In doubles, too, she has been a big improver in a season highlighted by an appearance in the Roland Garros final.

The Molik-Dellacqua duo is Australia's second-string pair behind medal contenders Sam Stosur and Rennae Stubbs, but both members of the first-time pair have reached grand slam finals and Molik has triumphed in two.

This year, however, the former world No. 8 has not won a tour-level singles match since January, and with her depleted ranking of 141st translating to a return to Challenger events and qualifying rounds, speculation still swirls about an impending retirement. If so, Dellacqua has been given no hint.

"I've hit with Alicia for the past few days and I think she's training as hard as she probably was when she was top 10," Dellacqua said.

"I think she's hitting the ball amazing, and I know she's very excited to continue to play.

"I know she's absolutely pumped about the Olympics, and we're super-pumped to play the doubles, so I think we've definitely got a good shot."

She knows Chinese conditions and is less bothered by the likelihood of polluted air than excited by another highlight in a crowded year.

The draws are out!

Alicia has to play Lindsay Davenport in the first round of the women;s singles. When I first looked at the draw I was like 'oh no' but, putting things into perspective, Lindsay has been suffering a lot from a knee injury of late, and her form has hardly been world class. My guess is that she will be pretty darn cautious with the US Open just around the corner, and that could work in Alicia's favour.

Having said that, Alicia hasn't exactly been in the form of her life this year. She hasn't won any match since the Prague Open in May and she hasn't won any matches at main draw tour level since the Australian Open in January, where she beat Kaia Kanepi. Let's just hope that her injuries are gone, her body holds up, she is fresh from a break and her training block has done her some good.

In doubles, Casey and Alicia play Francesca Schiavone and Flavia Pennetta in the first round. Should they win that, they would face Yung Jan Chan and Chia Chuang, the third seeds. Not exactly an ideal draw...but good luck to them both :D

Aug 7th, 2008, 05:47 AM
Oh thats a tough one for Alicia. She will have to serve well if she is to have a chance or otherwise she's pretty much gone.

Aug 7th, 2008, 06:00 AM
Yes I agree, and the serve, frankly, hasn't been working all year
Oh well, time to pick things up again

Aug 7th, 2008, 08:01 AM
Good luck Alicia, you can take out Lindsay :armed:

Aug 7th, 2008, 09:01 AM
tough draw i know... but who knows with the Chinese conditions anything could happen. Lindsay is probably a good match up for Alicia - a slower shotmaker will allow/force Alicia to play agressive and for some reason I have a good feeling.... Dinara =( but again who knows.... Chan/Chuang is the only team standing in their way for a doubles medal I think...

good luck Alicia!

Aug 7th, 2008, 10:01 AM
lol shit draw looks like its Athens 2012 or wherever the next olympics r being held

Aug 7th, 2008, 10:35 AM

Aug 7th, 2008, 12:07 PM
My goodness! Drawing Lindsay in the frist round when you are already struggling! If there are tickets still I will take my buds up to cheer her on. How depressing!

Aug 7th, 2008, 01:52 PM
Really, this isn't that bad, davenport has been out for a while with that knee, bit of the unknown factor. Really anyone that alicia would of been drawn up against would of been tough.

Aug 7th, 2008, 10:55 PM
good luck Alicia!:rocker2:

Aug 7th, 2008, 10:57 PM

Aug 8th, 2008, 06:29 AM
well davenport just withdrew from the singles, so alicia will play an alternate instead. makes her path to the 2nd round a little bit easier, but who knows.

Aug 8th, 2008, 07:09 AM
Yay! But  for Lindsay

Aug 8th, 2008, 07:13 AM
Thats better for Alicia :D

Good luck to her!

Aug 8th, 2008, 08:18 AM
i feel terrible for saying this but its good news for Alicia.... good luck!

Aug 8th, 2008, 09:48 AM
I wonder who this alternate may be? A bit of good luck for Alicia for a change. Make the most of it.

Aug 8th, 2008, 10:52 AM
i think it might be martinez-sanchez but im not sure.... any alternate would be better than lindsay

So Disrespectful
Aug 8th, 2008, 11:59 AM
Damn! Lindsay withdrew.

If she had have played, I'm sure she would have retired mid-match or performed poorly anyway. It's not as good a thing as people are making out, but if Martinez-Sanchez is her opponent then she has a great shot.

Aug 9th, 2008, 02:12 PM
Good luck to Alicia. She certainly has trained hard for this event and it means a lot to her so I wish her very well.

Aug 9th, 2008, 05:48 PM
GO ALICIA!!:rocker2::bounce::hug::kiss:

Aug 9th, 2008, 06:50 PM

Aug 10th, 2008, 01:31 PM
Good luck Lish!!! And yeah, it's Martinez-Sanchez. She should beat her :wavey:
Martinez-Sanchez was very impressive against Venus at Wimbledon, hopefully she doesn't bring that form into this match :)

Aug 11th, 2008, 02:01 AM
Martinez Sanchez is the favourite i9n this match hope Alicia can put up a good fight

Aug 11th, 2008, 03:47 AM
10 winners to a whopping 40 unforced errors from Alicia :help: very poor stats from her.

MJS had 14 winners to 16 unforced errors.

Aug 11th, 2008, 03:49 AM
Well at least she still has the dubs with Casey, hopefully she can do better in that.

Aug 11th, 2008, 03:56 AM
omg... omg... omg...

this is the end for alicia's singles career IMO.

Aug 11th, 2008, 04:24 AM
yeah, that's embrassing, nothing else to say really. This demise to her career is really sad.

Aug 11th, 2008, 04:51 AM
poor alicia  heartbreaking :sobbing:

Aug 11th, 2008, 06:08 AM
My goodness me! THis is terrible to see as she tried so hard to train and get fit in time. I would imagine this loss will give Jessica Moore the US Open wild card.

Aug 11th, 2008, 06:19 AM
Alicia :tape:
This is so sad, the end is NIGH IMO...
I hope she plays the AO at least once more though...

And definitely, Jess should get US Open wildcard, no doubt now...not even AUSBOY could possibly disagree

Aug 11th, 2008, 07:04 AM
bugger . . . :tape::fiery:

Aug 11th, 2008, 08:19 AM

Beijing, 11 August 2008
After the party comes the hangover.

Or, in Alicia Molik's case, after the high point of an Olympics bronze medal in Athens comes her career nadir at the Beijing Games.

The on-going woes of the one-time queen of Australian tennis continued today with a demoralising first-round singles loss to Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez, a Spaniard ranked a lowly 81st in the world who only gained at start when Lindsay Davenport withdrew last week.

Molik succumbed 6-1 6-1 inside an hour and did her best to put a positive spin on her sad demise.

"Of course it's disappointing because you always go into a match thinking, believing and preparing to win and when you don't, it's disappointing," Molik said.

"But it's better than judo. You're out there for a minute (in judo) and you can get demolished and walk off. Someone got demolished in a minute yesterday so, you know, I had a good hour maybe."

While the former world No.8 was trying to remain upbeat, Molik conceded the Athens Games felt a lifetime ago and that she was struggling to turn her career around.

"It was a long time ago," Molik said.

"They're probably some of the fondest memories of my entire career, winning bronze.

"Especially because tennis players never really get to be in a team too often. I mean, Fed Cup for us girls. Davis Cup for the boys.

"Yeah, God, I was playing probably some of the best tennis obviously of my career at that particular time."

Molik hasn't won a tournament since capturing her fourth in five months at the 2005 Sydney International and said she desperately needed some decent court time after three years of mostly injury and illness.

"The key for me is to have great training. To have great training, you need to be injury-free and that's something I've struggled with for a while now," she said.

"I haven't really had too many good patches this year."

Molik is still in the Olympic women's doubles with Casey Dellacqua, who is enjoying a watershed season in both versions of the game, having reached a career-best 39th in the singles rankings and made the French Open doubles final as well as the semi-finals at Wimbledon.

"Casey's riding high. She's had an unbelievable doubles record this year. Amazing, amazing," Molik said ahead of the pair's first-round clash tomorrow with Italians Flavia Pennetta and Francesca Schiavone.

"So I'll let her do her thing and I won't say too much at all. I'll just leave her to own devices and just take care of what I'm doing, I think."

Aug 11th, 2008, 09:40 AM
Oh god Alicia :sobbing:

The end of her career is close I think

Please fight hard :armed:

Hopefully she will go home and give it one last shot starting with the Aussie 25's.

Aug 14th, 2008, 10:13 AM
Hopefully she will go home and give it one last shot starting with the Aussie 25's.
Hopefully, Alicia made waves or so years ago by training hard and being match hardened. This will be a good start.
Even at the start of the year she was playing top 50 tennis. Struggled against those in the top 30 or so but was beating players around her! A solid run of tournaments and I reckon she could get back to that point easy enough.

Aug 14th, 2008, 11:08 AM
has she actually signed up for the 25ks:)?

Aug 14th, 2008, 11:10 AM
We don't know yet, list for Rockhampton is out next week.

Aug 14th, 2008, 11:59 AM
Well I think it is the best that Lish participates on a few ITF's, just to find her game again. Always starting from scratch is the best way of getting back to the top, and it will be difficult but she has to believe in herself.

Aug 14th, 2008, 05:20 PM
I feel the end of her career coming. Please, Lish, think about it, take some time off, just train and then come back. STRONGER :hearts:
