Sheer, blind, unthinking fanaticism can be a beautiful thing.

I can only hope our beloved Lena knows how passionate and loyal her fans are.

We are not windbags, we are RIGHT.

Lena is the greatest thing to ever happen to tennis. And maybe--no, certainly--the world in general.

Let's keep going!

Lenas conquerer continues her reign of terror...

One up side of Lenas rather poo US HC season thus far (played one event, lost in first round) is there is an opportunity to grab some points next year, what with her doing so well to this point she is gonna be struggling to defend all her points in 2009, thus assuming she still plays in '09 as I am sure she will be.

Blame Elena and her fantastic schedule

I can not think how close of being number 3,2,1 Elena would be at this moment with a better schedule

The worst thing is that Safina can surpass her :tape: . Time to think in a new job it it happens

You aint nobody till youve been banned, I speak from experience.

So, if only lena coulda made it back to number 5, she could be 4th seed at USO.

Why does Lena ALWAYS run into the current "running hot" player at every bleeding event.

Same as she shouldn't lose to Dulko, Arvidson, Schruf, Kleinova, Bammer... I missed someone? :p:p

Seriously speaking, shit happens and this season it doesn't happen to Elena very often. I am really satisfied with her results this year. But one thing I am NOT satisfied is her scheldule... I think with current form she could easily end this year in top3 if she'd spend less time on photosessions and more at tennis events.
Top3? To hell with top3. She faced number ONE three times this year, and didn't gave Ana any chance. Actually there's only one player on tour wich I can say that is better player than Elena- and this player is out till propably even end of season. Seriously, if she wanna make something big, she should do it now- now or never. But she will not achieve this playing 1 tournament during 4 weeks...

Ivanovic looks lost these days, especially losing to a fat slob like Paszek. Womens tennis is a mess right now with all the injuries and non competitors in it. It looks like Safina could be number one by the end of the year with nobody playing events anymore. At least mens tennis is still fun to watch, right Captain. :D

P.S. Ivanovic is too thin now. She needs to put some pounds back on her slim body and get away from all the off court crap she's involved in. Elena needs to play a bunch of matches before the US Open. The Olympics are a waste of time. :o

In my opinion this matches - Lena's defeat ag. Cibulkova, Ivanovic ag. Paszeck, Jankovic, etc. - makes WTA quite interesting. I would not like to have two players taking up all the titles like it happened in ATP last years. I like the fact that even the #6 in the world has pretty decent chances to become #1 .
Isn't the ATP more interesting now that Federer is losing some matches against weak players? We will finally see a change in the top after what ¿4 seasons?
Ok had to post to add the new thread to subscriptions. Congratulations everybody, this is great news. Damn, didn't knew how much you guys can talk about Elena, even when she has played 1 match in the last 3 weeks :D

She played a lot during clay and grass. Four events on clay, two on grass--she needed some time off. I was really looking forward to her playing a new event in Stanford, but we also expected more out of Elena in Canada. She should do well in Beijing; she has a good record in Asia. I doubt she'll take the title, but I'd rather her take USO anyway.

And it's true. Elena runs into the hottest player at almost every tournament. Sharapova won Melbourne, Safina made the final of Paris, and Venus won Wimbledon. That's just the slams.

Anyway, since I'm far more interested in the US Open, I figured you all should know...

4R opponent:
Chakvetadze, Zvonareva, Hantuchova (if she plays), Szavay/Bartoli/Azarenka

QF opponent:
Ivanovic, Jankovic, Kuznetsova, S. Williams

Need I say more?

Because of this (as I remember I already posted this):

Men's/Women's Singles - 64 Draw/16 Seeds
Seed 1 On line 1
Seed 2 On line 64
Seeds 3 - 4 Drawn on lines 17, 48
Seeds 5 - 8 Drawn from top to bottom on lines 16, 32, 33, 49
Seeds 9 -12 Drawn from top to bottom on lines 9, 25, 40, 56
Seeds 13 -16 Drawn from top to bottom on lines 8, 24, 41, 57

Anyway, I wish Lena didn't care THAT much about the Olympics. The tennis Olympic event is fairly useless. Apart from avid followers of tennis, most people don't even know that tennis is an Olympic sport, and you would be lucky to see the F on TV even.

For most of the other sports involved, the Olympics is the pinnacle of their sport, and the most coveted prize. In tennis, it's merely a backdrop. Winning a TI would probably be bigger IMO.

miffedmax
Aug 3rd, 2008, 05:35 PM
I don't think we have to worry about Lena's place in tennis history. She will always be Russia's first Olympic medalist, and half of the first all-Russian Slam final in history.

Barring a miracle, she's always going to be in TOB's shadow, and other players will surpass her achievements. But like ol' Nasty herself says, nobody can beat being the first. I wish like hell she was the first Russian Slam winner, but I'll have to settle for that being our dear Nastya.

TOB's always going to be remembered as the first Russian to win Wimbledon. That she's also the first Russian to win the AO doesn't get mentioned, sort of like Sveta's US Open. First-ever and First-Wimbledon are the two biggies.

Even if Lena wins a Slam, it won't do much to change her legacy as probably the 9th or 10th best of her generation. She's not going to catch the Williams sisters or Justine. She's had a great career, and I honestly don't think that people will compare her to Safina or any of the other players who are breaking out in the '07/08 time frame because she's probably peaked back in her earlier years.

I know I'm a broken record, but she's had a very good career. I think she could have done better, but then again she could have done worse.

Anyway, I'm way past worrying about rankings or results at this point anyway. Lena is MY No.1 until the end.

I notced Lena first at Wimb where she played Doubles and looked incredible, a tall tanned muscular goddess with incredible hair and a beautiful face, saw on and off after that then became totally hooked in '04 of course.

Safina can win as much as she likes, will still be a red faced minger, that will not change whatever her ranking, we need to take a leaf out of Miffeds book, bollocks to rankings etc, if you adore Lena it will make no difference, those that love her will never forget her however many tournys she wins.

Not mentions to some contradictory posters like Demugska . He wanted Venus to lose in Rome bc she would not overtake Elena in the rank and now he has no problem with the druggie Dinara winning , even if she overtakes Elena in the next rank

Take it easy. Safina don't have better carreer than Elena, at least now. Jankovic will not be remembered as better player than Elena. Everyone who follows carreer of their both will agree. I don't feel a need to cheer against them. Have no intrest in it.

I notced Lena first at Wimb where she played Doubles and looked incredible, a tall tanned muscular goddess with incredible hair and a beautiful face, saw on and off after that then became totally hooked in '04 of course.

Safina can win as much as she likes, will still be a red faced minger, that will not change whatever her ranking

Sure, but as I remember its tennisforum, not beauty contest :lol::lol:

Maybe because I'm not a fan of Venus as I am Safina  And Dinara will not take over Elena now she has won Montreal. So what's the problem? While on the topic of contradictory posters, who posted in GM a few weeks back that the rankings speak for themsleves and don't lie *cough* ATP rankings *cough*

Reading some of the last comments I have some conclusions

1.- Most of people here don´t have the same interest in Lena as tennis player than Elena , the good looking woman. They enjoy more a pic of Elena than a forehand winner
2.- Zero interest in her legacy once she is retired from tennis
3.- They root for the direct rivals of Elena , instead of rooting against them

In the sum , a bad year for Elena this 2008 . Another 3 players have surpassed her in the tennis history books ... Ivanovic , Jankovic and Safina, who will crush her easily cos already has 8 titles at 22 years old , helped by the doping vs the ridiculous 9 titles of Elena

Bye fanboys , keep enjoying the Lena pics :wavey:

I don't think we have to worry about Lena's place in tennis history. She will always be Russia's first Olympic medalist, and half of the first all-Russian Slam final in history.
.

In a country like Russia , they donīt give a shit about silver medals. They win like 2 gold medals per day in the Olympics. Maybe in a third world poor country like Chile a silver medal is something big, not in Russia

Being part of the all russian finals is a datail as other russians are winning Grand Slams

The only Russian winning Grand Slam titles is TOB.

No other Russian has more than one (on the women's side).

Only Sveta, TOB and Lena have played in more than one.

Ordinarily, Sin, I'm find with your rants but right now you're being a condescending jerk.

There are a lot of fans here who have other favorites besides Lena, but if push came to shove I think that most of the people here would pick Lena in a head-to-head against any other player.

And finally, there are dozens of attractive women on the WTA tour right now. Nobody's just looking at the pictures.

Shut the fuck up, Felipe.

Christ on a cracker. Safina's having a great three months. Most of her titles until Berlin were fucking TIV or TIII. Elena's had a great CAREER. Safina's in a purple patch that I really doubt lasts.

Concerning Jankovic, at least Elena has two slam finals and will probably end up with more titles than JJ since Elena can actually win titles--she doesn't win many, but more than JJ at least.

Ivanovic has huge weaponS. Dementieva has one huge weapon, and it's prone to going off. Not Ivanovic.

But I must agree with Max. She's my favorite player ever. There's no doubt about it. I love her dearly. Tennis is going to be nothing for me when she's gone.

A lot of players are going to eclipse Elena. Dementieva has eclipsed Dokic and Myskina, two old rivals, at least to me anyway, I know you can argue Myskina but I would rather have Elena's career. Anyway, at the end of the day, it doesn't matter. Elena's had a wonderful career.

1. I said earlier became her fan when she saved MP against Davenport with a forehand winner. I couldn't care less about what she wears for her matches.

2. Sure I would move on when Elena retires, but I wouldn't have a true fave as she is when she does.

3. Lena was in the top ten for what, 3 or 4 straight years and 5 total years? Safina probably hasn't been there for 6 months total and Jankovic for no more than 18 months. I don't know if you're one of those posters that spew sh - I mean - say that Grand Slam results are the only things that count, then Lena beats both of them there too. If Lena were to play Lucie or Na in a slam I would root for Elena.

I know this is probably difficult because of the way the ranking systems have changed over the years. But would anyone have any idea what the highest amount of ranking points Elena has ever had is? And When?

I.e When (According to ranking points) was her greatest achieving period of 12 months?

She is currently at 2912 and has such a great opportunity to add more to that between now and Moscow...

Tis a shame she couldn't break the 3000 barrier before US Open ... an olympics gold might fix that

It has been a while since she has had this many points...

LudwigDvorak

Elena's blown a lot of chances for more points this year, and probably will continue to do so after USO.

I would imagine her schedule will be:
Beijing-Flushing Meadows-Tokyo-Stuttgart-Moscow-Doha

The only thing Elena screwed up this year is her ability to get a few more titles and get a top four/three rank. Five or six more events this year and that's it...oh well. Great runs in Dubai and Berlin with some chances for more like that. I'm still hopeful.

It's doubtful Wozniacki will ever achieve anything that big in tennis. She just doesn't have a big enough game. Undoubtedly she'll take advantage of a few depleted fields in big events throughout her career, but there will always be someone to overpower her in the end.

Early in the second set of the Fed Cup '05 match against Amelie, she hits this out of nowhere amazing volley winner that she literally just picked up off her racket, and while it was going over the net she jumped up and down a couple of times with this adorable look on her face, and when it was finished, she had this sweet smile. She looked so proud of herself for hitting that shot.

Any wonder I was ready to back a slightly gawky, bang-wearing blonde with an infectious giggle and a forehand that could drive tennis balls through the front armor of an M-1?

Nicole Vaidisova seems to be going nowhere fast, while Safina is on the move up the rankings. Why? Safina is in top shape, plays with lots of enthusiam and now has confidence. Nicole has no enthusiam and is too lay back. With her talent, I think she could have won a major by now along with a Tier 1 tournament. It's all about attitude.

Either way, Nicole's already achieved more than Safina did at her age (even with a duff year), and who thought Safina's career was going anywhere earlier this year after some terrible losses?

On the subject of Wozniacki, enthusiam counts for little in today's game. Having some big weapon(s) counts for much more, something which Wozniacki doesn't have. Most of the people winning slams today were already making some sort of dent into the top of game by her age. She has an excellent record against players she should beat, and a woeful record against those she shouldn't be beating. I'm sure she'll have a very consistent career, and propably make it into the lower echelons of the at some point, but winning slams, etc looks doubtful at this point.

That's what I meant, yes. I guess opportunity was a bad word because her success has a lot to do with her working her ass off, but most of us mere mortals tend to forget that sometimes.

She was kind of gangly at first--you can see why they teased her and called her "le petite" at school, but she still had that kind of girl-next-door pretty look.

But yeah, it's like overnight. Gorgeousness. Honestly, I see some pix of her as a teen and I don't even think it's the same person. But that's why it's so charming when that "le petite" part of her shows through, the half-assed piroutte being a great example. It's so genuine, so spastic, so completely her.

None of the above should be construed as an endorsement of her trimming her bangs, though.

Who knows? Elena felt out of top15 last year. Some clowns even predicted her end. Noone will guarantee she will be still in form being 30 years old.

Yup, I agree with you on both points :) But on Wozniacki, she is still just 17 (think) give her time to develop weapons and maybe she could become a top player, but you never know. She could just fade away

It's true, Wozniacki could surprise me and become an elite player, but even though she's still young (18 now I think :p), future top players usually have the raw weapons at this time. Pretty much all the elite now had huge games when they were 17/18, but they couldn't control them. About the only exception to this is Jankovic, and even then she's still slamless. This is one of the reasons why I find the whole "Radwanska will become a huge power player aswell as a varied hacker" argument quite lame.

Wozniacki at this point, is a Steady Eddie. She's not a pusher, but finds it almost impossible to hit outright winners from the baseline, something which is becoming essential in today's game

I was thinking last night about how Elena could possibly end her career.

The past eight/nine years, at the WORST, she's been a consistent presence in the top 20. It's weird thinking of her fall out of the top 20. And at her worst, she's always had a few good runs here and there, so it's even weirder to think she could be top 40/50 struggling to put together wins.

Her game is so much different in comparison to the new generation. The new girls either like to hit big, down the line baseline winners or run around like rats defending like crazy since they have no ability to dominate from the baseline.

I personally think if she could stay healthy and fit there'd be no problem having a Sugiyama-like finish to her career. Top 40 player with the occasional surprise. I think that'd be acceptable, right?

But she has a few more years of top ten/top five if she can keep up a decent level.

Until then, though, let's dominate Beijing, k? K.

I'm not sure how many many more years Lena will continue playing on for.

I used to always believe she would be playing into her 30's. I find it hard to believe she would continue playing through as a journeywoman, with a Sugiyama like finish (i.e feeding off the scraps of the tour in order to keep an inflated ranking, then get owned by every top player, and just about every other ballbasher on the tour when they are on).

Top 40 with the occasional surprise would not be acceptable for someone with Lena's talent/achievements. Doubt it will happen though. If she dropped out of the top 20/30 I think she'd retire. Not gonna happen any time soon though.

Demska

Sugiyama is a doubles player = less running. Not taking it away from her she is super super fit but she is long gone in terms of threatening top 10 players (Hantuchova clearly isn't a top 10 player after her choke at AO)

The subject of having a family comes up more and more often in her interviews, and I suspect that may be a sign that retirement is crossing her mind.

My guess is she retires at 30, is married at 31, the proud mother of two gorgeous kids by 35, and sitting in the Friends Box with Grandmommy Vera watching her daughter win Wimbledon by the time she's 55.

Oh, and she'll still be smokin' hot.

She hardly ever talks about retiring/having a family. It's only been mentioned a few times in the last year or so that I can recall. That's moreso than it was a few years ago, I guess, but for right now, she has the drive to do well and compete. She still cares. A lot. How she reacted to losing to Venus proves that, that's all I'm gonna say.

When she's playing again in a few days all of these thoughts should be long gone. Play starts on Sunday, and in case any of you don't know...she can draw anyone outside the top 16 seeds in the first round. She could get Davenport in the first round.

As well, she won't get Sveta in the QF or Zvonareva in 3R. So her 3R draw opponent will be either Azarenka, Hantuchova, or Szavay. Her QF opponent will be Jankovic, Ivanovic, or Serena. Good stuff, no?

I only swear (much) if it's a really important match. Usually I just scream "C'MON!" or "LICHNA!" or I just...scream, no words. :o

Seeing Elena so much has put the nasty habit in me to scream when she hits a really stupid shot. I found it unnerving that I was screaming with Elena in unison so much during the Wimbly semis. :o

I was talking a lot to myself during the Moscow final. Not quite as much in Dubai, since I thought she had a better shot, but I remember just being flat after she lost that first set. Then Sveta was like three games away at one point in the second and I was like NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!! And I thought she was going to lose her mind after being up 3-0 in the third. I still remember that hot dog shot Sveta hit that I thought was going to lose the match for Elena.

But, Moscow, well. After her two slam finals, that was probably the biggest match of Elena's life, and a LOT was riding on it. I know I was irritating mom a lot by how much I was talking and yelling at the TV and to myself.

When she had that horror show against Azarenka in Charleston, that I saw live, I was screaming, yelling, and talking to myself a lot then too. iPatty told me, after one point that Elena screwed up, I pushed my big straw hat down over my face and screamed (which I did, I remember that), and that the people behind me looked at me funny.

18, not 17... No, she won't fade away. But she also won't be multi slam champion. I think noone from 1990+ generation will be. Maybe De Brito...Or maybe Paszek if she will lose weight...
There aren't many multi slam winners around these days, Maria, the Williams sisters. Womens tennis is really hurting for top players.
Wozniaki looks like a sure shot top player to me, but then again I thought Nicole Vaildisova would be too. Nicole may fade away soon unless she gets her act together soon. BTW, the only title Paszek will win is a hot dog eating contest. Never heard of De Brito.

There are no medals for the QFinalists

But there are points for the quaters...And till the quaters its no serious threat (I DON'T belive she is capable to lose with Arvidson twice in the row. I don't belive she is capable to lose with Wozniacki)

An ideal draw would have been with Sveta , Ivanovic or Jankovic in QF . In that order

Once You're right...but it is how it is...And that draw is really good for her...

This isn't a bad draw at all in my opinion. Lena has a nice path to the quarters before facing Serena who isn't in prime form right now, so Lena definatly has a shot to take her out. Ivanovic in the semis but she isn't a sure bet to be there either, plus Lena beats her everytime. Lena definatly has a shot to go deep with this draw. Good luck Lena!

Elena can beat Serena we all know thta I guess.......they way Elena played against Serena in Moscow was great great great, and we all know how badly Lena wanted to win Moscow, and now we all know that the Olympics are the most important thing for her this year.....she has worked hard....she hasnīt play much since Wimbledon but she went to Miami to train .....
If Elena beats Rena....then we can expect her to be in the final again..:bounce:.....Ivanovic is not playing good at all....and even if she has a good run in Beijing well we all know that Ana is Elenaīs bitch .....

Elena has a wonderful chance to win this title.

I am trying to prepare myself for a heartbreaking three set loss to Serena or Ana, though. It's bound to happen.

But then again, I am a biased fan. I usually have more faith in her than most people.

I like the draw Lena has, unfortunately I don't like it in general.
With Lena, Dani and Caroline being my favourites, at least 2 of them will be out after the 3rd round

By the way, just read my way through the previous pages, and I should have it known that I feel reading Max's posts on Lena really is a joy and a priviledge.

Who woke big Al up? :weirdo: He's been gone for a long time. I have one word for these Olympics. There will very little coverage of the tennis, because tennis doesn't belong in the Olympics, besides these games are being held in Hell(China). I will only watch Elena's matches which means I won't be watching any tennis unless she gets to the final anyway. Right now Elena needs matches because the US Open is much more important than the dumb Olympics and I hope for a big run in NYC later on this month. :)

Did anyone here know Elena's scheduled for Luxembourg? TIII event, two weeks before Doha.

So it's looking like:
Sydney-Melbourne
Paris [i]-Dubai-Miami
Charleston-Berlin-Istanbul-Paris
Rosmalen-Wimbledon
Montreal-Beijing-Flushing Meadows
Tokyo-Stuttgart-Moscow-Luxembourg City-Doha

Seems out of line of her usual preparation this year to do so much in the fall, but she'll have four weeks off in the fall, too.

Warning: It's possible that some of this information could be out of date.

Elena has played in New Haven eight years in a row (2000-2007). She didn't sign up this year, IMO, because of the Olympics. Note that Dinara Safina intended to play in New Haven and then withdrew to play in the Olympics, when she replaced Chakvetadze.

Anne Worcester, New Haven's tournament director, is withholding wild cards until the last moment knowing that half of the Olympic main draw will lose in the first round. Anna Chakvetadze signed up late and is number one on the alternates' list, but as far as I know hasn't received a wild card yet.

If Elena loses early, New Haven is still a possibility.

GM isin't a Love-Inn. You can't expect every poster to come in and share these Lena sentiments, not least rabid Serena fans.

I'm just saying, you should have expected some semi-hostile comments bumping such a thread in GM. Not everyone in there sits on the fence, and comes into practically every result thread with the standard "Well Done!", and rightly so.

Anyway, I expect Lena to have a decent run in Beijing.

Serena is somewhat of an unknown quantity at this point. Other prospects for a QF clash include another UQ (Vaidisova) and someone who's record off clay this year has been dismal (Cornet). With Ivanovic still a bit of a question mark, this is a good draw.

I'd also say that arguably, Lena's Russia's best hope for a medal. Kuznetsova will likely lose to Li IMO, Safina's coming in tired and Zvonareva hasn't played well since RG.

I didn't expect everyone to agree. Honestly, I expected by bumping it that it would die with a couple more posts after my initial post.

I figured since this match is nowhere close to being one of Serena's worst losses, and one of Elena's best wins...it wouldn't cause such a big fuss.

I guess I was naughty. I think I'd say I was more naive than anything, in this situation, though.

Tarpischev talked about Elena:http://www.games08.ru/2008/08/08_2804798.shtml

Translation:
- How to explain that all the tennis players live in the Olympics village but Elena Dementieva, who is famous for her modesty, preferred to stay at a luxury hotel?
-In Athens the players had to live in indeed spartan conditions. Dementieva couldn't get enough sleep. That was probably why she didn't do well.
- In Sydney Elena lived near a contruction site but she won a silver medal...
- The little house in Sydney where Dementieva stayed was actually "medal house". The sportmen who stayed there won 5 golds and 2 silvers.
