Petrova couldn’t have played better

July 29, 2008

Marie-Ève Pelletier’s run in the main draw of the Rogers Cup presented by National Bank was short lasting.

On Tuesday afternoon, in front of an encouraging crowd, the 26-year-old from Repentigny, Que., crossed paths with a Nadia Petrova at the top of her game. The 25-year-old Russian needed just 45 minutes to dispose of the Quebecker, 6-0, 6-1.

She took the first nine games of the match before Pelletier held her serve in the second set. “I couldn’t stop thinking of a 6-0, 6-0,” admitted Petrova. “That’s when I lost a game when I was returning serve. But I’m still satisfied with the way I played. I had never played her before – not even in junior – and I knew the crowd was cheering her on. But I made it through the match more easily than I expected. I couldn’t have asked for any better: a good match, a good crowd. It’s a great start to the tournament.”

Petrova won the first set in just… 19 minutes. She’ll take on Thailand’s Tamarine Tanasugarn in the second round.

“I played an amazing match. I’ve never played so well in my life,” joked Pelletier after the one-sided match. “No, seriously, I had problems on serve and she played a perfect match – so much so that I couldn’t really play. But everything you deserve comes back to you. She was almost perfect. She’s a really good player, really tough to beat.”

Still, Pelletier has no intention of becoming discouraged. “I’m going to play some tournaments in Mexico and then I’ll go to the Bronx before the US Open. I’m right in the middle of my career. Tennis is allowing me to learn a lot about who I am.”

Good luck. This time she should beat her.

BTW: I think the Eleven-clothes looked way nicer...

Does anyone know why she's with Babolat now?

Nadia got beat by Domi again, 76 62.
Awful loss. It looks like Nadia will never be top 10 again.
Too many losses to noncontenders.
