One transfer by itself will not draw attention for a program, but programs having 4 or more transfers within 5 years for example will.

Now we know the answer to the question why someone would transfer from Northwestern to Cal Poly. The answer is for playing time.

Oh well, Northwestern's loss is the Big West's gain!

Update 11/29/08

- Chloe Jones has option to go pro with a #978 WTA ranking.

gouci
Nov 30th, 2008, 08:44 AM
My 10 year old niece has a pulse and 900 wta ranking.... not a pro option
Form seems like I'm gonna have to set you straight again.

1. Your niece is not as good as Chloe Jones, a blue chip player that has been ranked in the top 10 of her graduating class each of the last 4 years. Playing 14 ITF women's pro tournaments in 2008, Jones' 1st and career high WTA ranking is #978 which she only earned 5 days ago.

To imply anyone with a pulse can have a 900 WTA ranking is ridiculous. Blue chip players such as Aeriel Ellis are trying but has never yet acquired a WTA ranking. In my book anyone with a WTA ranking in the top 1000 is a blue chip caliber player period!

2. You don't think anyone with a WTA ranking of 750+ will turn pro? Well then see Brittany Augustine. She's a pro with a current WTA ranking of 1008. So that note "option to go pro" for WTA rankings in the 1000 neighborhood is based on precedence.

3. When your niece attends the 6th grade you can create a profile for her at tr.net. Be sure to list Long Beach St. as a school of high interest. :haha:

Hey Form when they switched to combined rankings they stopped giving out singles and doubles rankings. So the only way a 17 year old would show a singles or doubles ranking is if they had an ITF ranking from a few years ago when they were like 14 years old.

Anyone with an ITF ranking inside the top 100, such as Oates and Voicu, I expect to be blue chip caliber players.

With 8 players and only 1 senior, which blue chipper Catherine Isip will replace next year, I hope that means Pepperdine doesn't have a scholarship left for blue chipper Arianna Colffer therefore increasing her chances of signing with UCI. :bigclap:

I was wondering about Ellis seeing how she hasn't had the results on the ITF level. Does anyone know if she actually turned pro because if she did I would not expect her to be on the Texas roster until the 09-10 season.

gouci
Jan 14th, 2009, 05:50 PM
Tennisace I would think a requirement to turn pro would be to have a WTA ranking 1st which Ellis has never acquired. I slotted her for next season because Texas seems to have 8 schollie players this year but 1 opening next year.

Form thanks for the congrats but I won't actually believe it until Colffer is playing for UCI in a fall tournament next season. (fingers crossed) Mallory Burdette seemed like a lock for Georgia when Stacey Tan signed with Stanford but the unexpected happened and Stanford signed both.

Was it CSUN or bad luck that the matadors may have signed exceptions to the rule on how good players that are ranked inside the ITF top 150 are expected to be.

Does anyone know what's up at Florida? They only have 5 players on the roster for this year. Are there any late additions or are they really going to go with 5 all season? I can't imagine they'll be successful if that is the case. Seems like Thornqvist can't keep players around, a lot of transfers out of that program. They might've been one of the favorites this year if they had kept Cohen and Borsanyi.

Jessica Alexander (sister of Megan) joins in January. I'm sure they'll pick up an international player as well. It's very interesting to see Thornqvist's perspective on transferring. When he was a NCAA player he transferred schools and because of this I think is very pro-transferring, even if it's his own players. The most interesting part is that he doesn't even "punish" the transfers out of his program. What I mean by this is the coach must release the player and has the option to determine if they can play immediately without the loss of year of eligibility.

There are three scenarios of transferring:
1) The home coach grants the transfer the ability to immediately play without the loss of eligibility,
2) The home coach does not grant the transfer the ability to immediately play but the transfer does, resulting in a loss of one year of eligbility,
3) The home coach does not grant the transfer the ability to immediately play and the transfer sits out a year, without the loss of eligibility.

An example of 1) is Cohen and Borsanyi.
An example of 2) is Suzi Fodor (she transferred out of Mississippi her freshman year and was only eligibile to play two years at Cal)
An example of 3) is Amanda Craddock (who sat out a year/played on the tour).

Ex. Wisconsin got a new verbal so I decided to update their roster and determine how many open slots they will have in the future. I noticed they got a transfer from Kentucky so the next day I decided to look at the wildcat's roster to see who took Trgovich's place. See how that works.

Thanks for your update. :worship:

PROPOSED: Change tennis rule to require first enrollment within 6 months of high school graduation. So, if you grad in Spring 2010... you have to start no later than January 2011. You get one extra semester (to decide or clean up academic shortfalls). If you delay longer, you lose a year of eligibility and have to sit a year in residency.

This is designed to cut down the:

• the int'l kids (and a growing number of US kids) trying a year of pro tennis and then doubling back to college

or the

• "I didn't get the offer Top 20 offer I wanted so I'm gonna try the pro's while I wait for a better offer" gambit

This proposed rule will have a huge effect on the big fish of foreign recruits. I would say 90% of international players that have a WTA ranking inside the top 800 have taken a year off to try the pros.

Plus some of the most elite players, those with WTA rankings inside the top 500, are those that couldn't make the pros after 2 years and are doubling back to college tennis.

So if this proposed rule passes it will essentially eliminate the 21 year old freshman or 22 year old sophomore like Cal's Jana Juricova and Mari Andersson.

Agreed

What is likely to happen is a trickle down effect

In short term, there will be a big void of int'l kids but as they learn the rule that will adjust a bit

The eliminiation of the elite kids doubling back will ultimately bring the college game downward... less talent and lesser level.

Also, the big dogs (BCS) will still get the best available. So the best kids going to Pepp, LB and UCI will now get offers at the bigger dogs who need players. Yes, even the Hammell's will now get Pac or similar interest and forgo a UCI for the higher profiles.

So the college game will weaken and the gap between the elite and the mid majors will ultimately grow wider since the best available, though less talented than now, will still go to the highest profile offer.

But this is going to be great news for tennis pros. Parent of competitive high school players are going to be thinking its worth spending that extra five or ten thousand dollars on training and travel, because the chances of the money being paid back or opportunities increased in college is going to be moving up.

I was just about to post this, too. Also interesting to see that Christina is keeping her amateur status for another year to see if she wants to try out college. I know the sisters are quite close, as I saw Christina watching Lauren play in a college tournament last fall, so imagine Christina playing at UNC, even for a semester. They'd have a serious shot at a national title.

Yes and no. I don't know about anyone else but I was kind of disappointed with Lauren's freshman year. She didn't break to the top that you would think she would have and she had some uncharacteristic losses.

North Carolina has huge gaps to fill with Katrina Tsang and Sanaz Marand graduating and Sophie Grabiniski as well (who's a big contributor in doubles).

I totally agree with you about Lauren's first year, but the Ivies have much stricter practice regulations than most DI schools, so she may thrive after a year off and in a different environment, but who knows. Tsang, and especially Marand are going to be tough to replace, but Lyons and Slater should both be solid players, if not exactly worldbeaters, next year.

That's quite old news.;) Should I take it that the Purdue site isn't one you check very often?

I never like it when one of the players I follow (well, whose results I follow) disappears but Craven has reappeared at Leeds Metropolitan (http://www.bucs.org.uk/core/core_picker/download.asp?id=14768) and is, I think, fourth seed in the ongoing British University champs (http://lta.tournamentsoftware.com/sport/event.aspx?id=6BC8001F-D29C-4F96-980D-96C25C757B2F&event=5). Been putting this off, wasn't expecting to be able to do any of these, but since amongst some of the remarkably researched worked-out examples you've done, you've included a gimme, I'll take a look.;)
The following players have disappeared from their school's roster and may become transfer candidates.

Ex. (disappeared from school roster of) - (player name) - (recruiting class)(star rating)

Harvard - Catriona Stewart sr. #5 - 2006 Great Britain ITF 364
Harvard - Elizabeth Brook jr. #7 - 2007 Great Britain

You have Catriona Stewart (http://www.gocrimson.com/sports/wlax/2008-09/bios/stewart_catriona)'s start year wrong. She's been playing a few ITFs since graduating. What she's done in the world of lacrosse, I have no idea. I'm almost certain she's the sister (http://www.itftennis.com/womens/players/player.asp?player=100014358) of Sabrina Stewart (http://www.tennisforum.com/showpost.php?p=16806489&postcount=181).

Elizabeth Brook may have better things to do (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Circle_of_Women) in her senior year (I don't know if it's the same woman or not, though it looks likely). She is the sister of Yale's Victoria Brook (http://www.yaledailynews.com/sports/sports-general/2008/09/24/tennis-great-expectations/). She is the daughter of Philip Brook, the heir apparent (http://www.wimbledon.org/en_GB/news/pressreleases/2009philipbrook_16_10_09.html) to the chairmanship of the AELTC.

And that's that for this thread. Abigail Olivier and Jenna Webster have disappeared off the face of google:(, I can place Alice Hall in France on or around 2009-02-20 but that's not much use, and Vanessa Johansson could be Scarlett's sister for all I know.

I'll validate your hunch. I don't know Lauren personally but I do have friends at Princeton and many other Ivy's. And yea, Lauren was given the boot from the team after she was caught violating Princeton's honor code. I was told the full story back when it happened but I won't try and rehash that here because the details are fuzzy and I wouldn't want to say something that was inaccurate. I don't know her personally, but I do really like Christina and her parents (I'm not just some silly fan girl ). Luckily for them (and really surprisingly) this whole thing has been kept extremely quiet, but it was still embarrassing for the McHale's. An unfortunate situation

Ask him about his # 6 with over 20 wins... yet another snackForm you sound hungry!

Long Beach St. played UCI twice this season with UCI using the same player at #6. Both times LBS had an opportunity to protest but did not.

I have a hard time believing the LBS head coach who was berating a chair umpire and creating a scene against Cal Poly because she felt wronged, didn't have the guts to protest if she felt wronged by UCI stacking at #6.

In any case either protest or SHUT UP!

Can you give advise to a parent? My son transfered to a different university after 2 years and now at the very last minute his new coach has stabbed him in the back and wants him out of the team. It is very late in the day to transfer, but can he transfer a second time and will he have to sit out for a year? Are coaches allowed to do this sort of thing after offering scholarships at the beginning of the summer? Is there anything we can do to appeal this decision as it could end up ruining my son's College tennis, and also he hasn't been able to study in the Business School so isn't studying his existing chosen degree.

I agree Jones and Hampton should definitely bolt out of the pros and into college.

Follow Mallory Cecil's example. If you're not better than her then go to college!

Where are they now?
