View Full Version : ;; Best match of the century - THE FINAL POLL

Okay, so now we have the 10 best matches of the century. They were voted by people from this forum (see this thread: http://www.tennisforum.com/showthread.php?t=350578), so please, no complaints. ;) Each of those matches got 5 votes, which was the criterion to get to the final poll.

We need to cut 10 down to 1, so vote for your favourite match. Voting ends Tuesday, July 22nd, 8:53 PM (20:53) DANISH TIME - Denmark is 1 hour ahead of Britain 0 hours ahead of Paris. I guess most of you know the time difference between your country and London/Paris, as two of the most important GS's are there. ;)

Enjoy! :wavey:

And by the way, I DO know that the century started in 2001 - but I thought the 2000 matches deserved to be in the poll too. ;)

As a fan for nearly ten years, I can easily say that the 2006 Miami SF between Sharapova and Golovin was the best tennis match I've ever seen. The comeback from 6-3, 5-1 was spectacular and the quality was unmatched throughout, particularly at 6-3, 5-3 when Tati saved those four match points. Each one was a very long and entertaining rally. I've never seen an American crowd get so into a tennis match before and the drama was great (Sharapova getting booed multiple times for various things). Tati also made a third set comeback from 4-2 down and sprained her ankle on a breakpoint for 4-4. It left me speachless and I've heard the same from many who have watched it, tennis fans or not. BTW, the final score was 6-3, 6-7(5), 4-3, ret.

The ESPN commentators also said the same and at the end, one said there are just some things you never forget and said this match was definitely one of them.

I'm suprised the Wimbledon 2008 final didn't make the list. Alot of people were talking about that final as being the "future of women tennis". They kept gushing about how big they were serving and hard they were hitting with so many winners and few errors.

I voted 2000 US Open Semi. In some ways, I think this was a more dramatic comeback than the 2005 Wimby finals against Davenport! Hingis was playing so well in this match, its unbelievable Venus found a way to win it, after that fluffed overhead leading 6-4,3-6,5-3* 15-30 on Venus' serve after an amazing rally:tape:!

Personally, I thought the Miami match with Tati and Maria was poor quality for most of it. There were good rallies, but if Sharapova was on, she would have crushed Golovin.

Anyway, this is for best match and to me, the clear choice for quality and drama is Wimbledon final 2005 with the 2003 Semi between Henin and JCap a close second. A lot of great matches there too...and some great matches omitted sadly.

Sorry, but you're completely off.

Maria played suberb tennis to go up 6-3, 5-1 and, like the commentators and those who watched said, Maria's level didn't drop but Tati played her game and went for her shots. Many of the pre-game comebacks were high quality as well.

Also, they've had many close meetings, so I really don't think she would have crushed her, which is irrelevant because she was playing very well anyway. ;)

Venus v.s. Hingis 2000...i mean some of the rallys had AA Stadium standing for a long time. People questioned "COuld Venus beat Hingis" in 2 straight gland slams. Wim 2005 is a close 2cd but the rallies weren't as entertaing(partially due to it being grass).

We'll just have to agree to disagree. I was rooting for Tati in that match, but IMO it was nothing compared to many of hte other great matches mentioned here. What I saw was Sharapova not playing as well as she could have.

And their H2H is 5-0 Sharapova

2004 Birmingham Sharapova def Golovin 4-6 6-2 6-1
2005 Birmingham Sharapova def Golovin 7-5 6-1
2006 Miami Sharapova def Golovin 6-3 6-7 4-3 ret

Funniest post of the...minute?

Of course it's the 2005 Wimbledon final. It's the pinnacle of women's tennis matches, it just IS exactly what should be representing it. First of all, it's at the biggest stage possible (arguably), with two grass court aficionados, twists and turns, match point saved, fantastic drama, longest final ever, and just an incredible match all around.

I don't know how a match that didn't even completely finish could be considered the best of the century. Seriously.

Except for San diego, those are all close matches, plus Tati was injured in Birmingham 05. She was playing on a sprained ankle in the SF.

I don't have the ratio but if you search online you will see many articles about the match and how it was of a superb quality and the drama was highly entertaining. I'm not sure how closely you watched the match because you describe it in a way which completely contradicts what most others say. Maybe you're also getting it confused with their US Open QF from that same year?

I guess we just agree to disagree. :shrug:

The Wimbledon Final is pretty great, but the injury by Lindsay kinda mars it for me.

In the 2005 AO SF they were fighting tooth and nail and come on....the WTA is all about Drama and this was NOTHING short of drama.

I know the Wimbly Final will win because of quality, but this was the bitchfight of the century for SURE!

2005 AO SF for me of this list.

That was just awesome. Sharapova was at her top level and most confident coming off beating Serena twice in big matches. Serena needed to shut up doubters saying Sharapova was about to eclipse her star. Serena being down and out and saving MPs with convincing winners. That return winner and glare @ 2nd MP. :rolls: Bitchrena.

These matches can be divided into two categories really;

1) A classic match, due to it's drama/tension AND high quality tennis;

2002 Australian Open F; Capriati def. Hingis 4-6 7-6(7) 6-2

2001 Australian Open QF; Hingis def. S. Williams 6-2 3-6 8-6

2003 US Open SF; Henin-Hardenne def. Capriati 4-6 7-5 7-6(4)

2000 US Open SF; V. Williams def. Hingis; 4-6 6-3 7-5

2005 Wimbledon F; V. Williams def. Davenport 4-6 7-6(4) 9-7

2) A classic match, due to its true drama/tension, with patchy quality;

2006 Miami SF; Sharapova def. Golovin 6-3 6-7(5) 4-3 ret.

2004 US Open SF; Dementieva def. Capriati 6-0 2-6 7-6(5)

2005 Australian Open SF; S. Williams def. Sharapova 2-6 7-5 8-6

2007 YEC F; Henin def. Sharapova 5-7 7-5 6-3

*Henin def Venus USO 07, should probably be in the former category, but for me, a two-set match can't really be the greatest of the century.

*Likewise, I don't think a match that finished on a retirement can be considered the greatest of the century.

Overall best match goes to Venus def Davenport Wimbledon F 05. It's arguably not the best quality of all the matches mentioned, but the fact that it was a slam final makes it extra special.

Wimby 2008 final should have been in this poll. While there was not much tension after the first few games of each set, the play was pheonominal. There were many winners, few errors from either player, and the result was because Venus had more success on her second serve. This was a great match.

My vote goes to the Wimbledon 05 final.
You are absolutely right that year 2000 was the last year in the 20th century, I do not understand why most people just do not understand this!
( First century Year 1-100, second century year 101-200 etc.)
I also agree that the 2005 Wimby final was the best quality tension filled match so far. I felt very bad for Lindsay because she had come so close in Australia and England in her comeback to great tennis, but I also was proud to see Venus break out of her lack of slam titles since 2001.

no that's what you chalk it up to.

The stakes were higher in a Wimby final than a us open semi. is that the match where Henin got "injured" but somehow managed to soldier on like she was in perfect health?

are you serious? Obviously this post is more out of the hate you have for Venus and not common sense. How was it a choke fest:tape:, Venus hit a winner on match point down, Lindsay couldn't do anything to stop that from happening, so there was no choke. Errors, I remember more winners.
