When an athlete aspires to another role, in this case the role of a 'glamorous woman' then she is judged by the standards applicable to 'glamorous women'.

I don't find anything weird in it. Rather the opposite.

I am sure she trained as hard back in 03 or 04 as she does now. But her legs looked much better and her performance footwork and movement wise was as good as it's now. I merely compared her legs from 2008 and her legs from past years. That's so weird indeed.

I'm not sure she trained as hard in 03 or 04, though. Then again, you may have more of an inside track.

Lunaris, Do you think Elena's movement became worse? I think Elena became more athletics from physical preparation. Before Elena did not play so mightily as she plays now.
You should know that better than me or ask people like Ludwig Dvorak or Corswandt who follow Elena's career extensively and very likely can provide a better insight than me. ;)
From a perspective of casual watcher; although I always liked Elena and rooted for her back in old times; aka mine perspective the main difference between her now and back in 2004 is her serve. If she has had it in 2004, she would have been a GS champion. Her movement and defensive play were always excellent, forehand too - I remember how it destroyed Capriati at the US Open 04. Backhand is still somewhat of a liability. Muscles are not such an important factor for Elena.
The best proof are imo her matches from 2007 when she was already heavy muscular AND had that ridiculous serve (ball toss). Her results were worse than ever. I don't know what changed, wasn't she practicing with Richard Krajicek?, maybe that was it. Anyway she started serving much better during the indoor season last year. Still lacked control over her 2nd serve in terms of power (it often had a speed of first serve), but that infamous ball toss, which was the main problem, was gone. She won Moscow, which meant a lot to her and gave her a lot of confidence. Now she has learned how to hit 2nd serve properly - found the edge between power and control. Pity, that when the match gets tight she tends to serve like in the old days, with that horrible ball toss. That needs to be improved. She could be as dangerous as Clijsters used to be in her prime.

Elena :hearts: very beautiful pics!!

Now if only she had a game that I liked, I'd be a fan. In terms of looks and personality, she's there for me, but I can't get into her game

For those complaining about her legs-well what do you want stick legs? I like women who are shapely, toned and fit. Skinny legs look weird to me. If you want skinny legs-go look at the fashion models. Elena has a great figure and it shows in these pics.

Also,I think it's great that in recent weeks. Elena, Ashley, Venus and others have been featured in photo shoots for prominent magazines. Go tennis!!

When you say you find nothing weird in it, do you mean it's a social norm (so nothing out of the ordinary) or as acceptable (she's put herself in the position to be Judged as a glamour model)?

I was able to read through the scans (the second spread still has too low resolution, it would be much better to scan the two pages separately).

Thank you, kaktusino, for the interview.

The pictures, by the way have next to nothing to do with the interview itself. Actually, they are totally contrary to the spirit of what Dementieva has to say.

So I rather suggest you focus more on the interview not on the pics that apparently were forced upon Elena by the magazine editors. And she says openly that she doesn't feel well wearing all these strange looking high heels, etc.

Regarding the interview, it is a strongly recommended reading for anybody able to read Russian, and for any groupie of Elena, and there are many in this forum -- if you love her so much why not to make some effort and learn minimum of Russian to be able to understand what your idol says? And what she says is as interesting as what probably any sportsman has to say.

The image that Elena projects in this interview is, in one word, a very reasonable woman with class. She openly says that she is disinterested in 'glamor', that she is not a victim of fashion either. She doesn't know how to pose and she is frankly not interested to learn. She is not a coquette either and is not particularly keen on playing one. She also has a very casual approach to all these constant galas taking place in the WTA world.

She says she is first of all a professional tennis player and she doesn't see herself in any other role at the moment. She also says there are even more important things in life than tennis. In the future, she says, she will have a family life like every normal woman, but she is not ready yet, she is too much focused on tennis and tennis is what gives her joy.

If she ever does anything besides tennis in her life, she is going to do that professionally which means she will learn all the necessary skills, like in tennis.

In one word: a great sportsman and a very sensible woman.

It doesn't -- isn't it obvious? If she aspired, she would have to be judged by the corresponding standards. And this is what she herself essentially says in the interview. If she had to acquire any other role besides tennis she would need to learn all the necessary skills to become a professional. And regarding glamor industry and fashion -- she is not interested.

Either this or Malva was one of the only people who thought Lena was actually an aspiring Glamour model and sought clarification from the article. Not everyone's been exposed to celebrity photoshoots it seems.

Next time there's a discussion about sport equality, it is important to take into account the dilemma women face between maintaining femininity demands and wanting to get the most of their bodies, something men don't seem to face.

I must agree with Pureracket partially--I dislike her legs. Oftentimes they look rather meaty, which isn't bad, but they look odd on her sometimes.

She looks absolutely stunning though.

And...this was a topic earlier:
Elena's foot speed, anticipation, movement, and defense were much better back in 2004 and 2005. I don't quite know what's changed--she's looked a little more sluggish since coming back from injury and sometimes she'll give up on a ball. Before? She'd practically never do that. However, I think her game from back then needed more potent defense than she needs now, especially with a serve like that.

That said, I fear Elena's chances in a long rally with too many players nowadays. I felt absolutely at ease in most back when I first started following her.

I think that's something Pureracket also said...it was some Serena fan in the "Is Elena Past Her Peak" thread...she's for sure past her peak but she's still capable of winning big.

OK rant over, she looks gorgeous. :)
