She wasn't that slow. Patty was playing superbly, hitting lots of great backhands, shockingly. Her serving was what most impressed me. It was 2005 serving, lots of great forcing serves. I haven't seen that in a while from Miss Schnyder. Very pleased with this performance, even if it was againt a "lesser" player.

That's what happens when you haven't played a match in 4 months, and make your comeback in a WTA MD. :(

Strangely, Amber's withdrawn from following ITF events...

Omg, this is like the WORST ASS match Amber Ever PLayed!!!! She was not herself TODAY and just making 10000000 unforced Errors and anyone who watched the MATch would know it. Anyway, the BEST game Amber played was in the first game of the Second set. Get it Together next Time Amber!!!

they should give WC for US up-coming player not to Liu who can't compete at this level.
Patty!!! your next match against Alisa could be very tough because she is in really great from now.GL

Hilarious! Patty dissed Amber by saying she didn't know who she was, and now she thrashed her, so the trash talking was backed up.

Patty you rock my world. :rolls: :haha:

Bank of the West: No home-court advantage for Liu

Michelle Smith, Chronicle Staff Writer

Tuesday, July 15, 2008

(07-15) 22:37 PDT -- Amber Liu was labeled a "hometown superstar" Tuesday night by the public-address announcer at Taube Family Tennis Stadium. Oddly, it came in the moments immediately after a 6-1, 6-1 loss to No. 5 seed Patty Schnyder in the first round of the Bank of the West Classic.

Liu's result was the least surprising in a day of upsets and wins by four of the five qualifiers in the tournament field.

But it was the most disheartening to the crowd that gathered to root on the player who was indeed a superstar during her college career on this same court at Stanford. While playing for the Cardinal from 2002-06, Liu won two NCAA singles titles and was a four-time All-American with a record of 161-2.

Now Liu, 24, is trying to find her footing on the pro circuit - she is ranked No. 328 in the world, has won more than $108,000 in prize money, but has played in just two WTA events this season. This was her first tournament appearance since March.

"A lot of exciting things have been happening at home and they've taken priority over my tennis," Liu said.

Liu recently became engaged to former Grand Slam champion Michael Chang, who was in the stands Tuesday night. She was with Chang last weekend in Newport, Rhode Island, when he was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame before hustling back to her alma mater for her fifth appearance in this tournament.

She played her first-ever match against Schnyder, the 29-year-old tour veteran from Switzerland who currently is ranked No. 13 in the world.

There was no home-court advantage. Schnyder was efficient and effective, while Liu hurt herself with unforced errors and exited the tournament in the first round for the fourth time, falling in 45 minutes. She won just two points in the final six games after winning the opening game of the second set.

"I'm a little out of match practice," Liu said. "I felt like I saw glimpses of how I can play, glimpses of good shots. But momentum-wise, she had it."

Still, Liu said it was a "no-brainer" to accept a wild-card invitation to this tournament, despite her three-month layoff.

"I feel more comfortable playing on that court than any place else in the world," Liu said.

Schnyder acknowledged it was not a difficult night.

"I think maybe she wanted to do better and play a better match here, but I was just there and not letting her," Schnyder said.

The rest of the day's results were marked by the success of the qualifiers. Two of them knocking off seeded players.

Seventh-seeded Nadia Petrova (ranked No. 17 in the world) lost 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 to Dominika Cibulkova and No. 8-seed Francesca Schiavone of Italy fell to Canadian Aleksandra Wozniak.

In Tuesday's late match, Great Britain's Anne Keothavong became the fourth qualifier to advance with a 7-6 (4), 6-1 victory over Sania Mirza of India, the runner-up in last year's tournament.

Top-seeded Serena Williams makes her tournament debut at 7 p.m. tonight against 15-year-old Michelle Larcher de Brito of Portugal, who already has won four matches in this tournament, including three qualifying matches and Tuesday's first-round effort against Gisela Dulko of Argentina.

I don't know where that writer got the record of 161-2. Her career record in NCAA singles is 94-23.
