Laura played so well in the final and actually just plays really well in general - not like a junior but like a mini pro! And she's only 14! She has had such a great run defeating the #1 and #3 seeds and other respectable juniors in the draw. I'm really excited about her future!

Does Britain finally have a female star in the making? She reminds me a lot of Ana Ivanovic. Let's hope Laura has just as much success!

Can anyone tell me what her game is like? Forehand, backhand, serve, movement, volleys?

Amazing forehand, decent backhand, very good first serve, ok second serve (too many double faults though), movement is good but lacks a bit of power (normal as she is 14 ;)), pretty good volleys as well.

Overall a fantastic game for grass, she could serve and volley a lot more than she does. She has no real weakness in her game, and if she can build on the foundation she has got already she will be a star.

She is left-handed
with a two-handed backand
She has a good serve
And seems to don't like volleys...

Jul 5th, 2008, 08:45 PM
Can anyone tell me what her game is like? Forehand, backhand, serve, movement, volleys?

She looks a little like Patty Schnyder, and as well as also being a leftie, she has a forehand like Schnyder's too. Except it works well on grass ;)
Her backhand is pretty good too, and she takes the ball in the air with confidence, hitting some crisp drive-volleys. Her side-to-side movement needs some work, so she can chase down shots that she currently doesn't quite get to. Her service motion is really good.

I was on Court One today and was very impressed with young Laura. It's often said that tennis is sometimes as much a mental game as it is a physical one, and the 6th game in the second set could have proved the pivotal game of the match. Instead of ending it 4-2 in front (two games away from the title) Laura found herself back level at 3-3. Some players, even at WTA Tour level, after losing the second set, might well have gone on to lose the match. Others might have resorted to gamesmanship, and gone off for a 'bathroom break' (are you reading, Romana?), but Laura just got it together mentally, and came out and played a really feisty third set. All credit to her, she deserved all the praise that's been lavished on her in recent days :worship:

The last two Australian Open boy's singles finals have been played on Rod Laver Arena...but I don't think that the crow would have been as big as here on Court 1 yesterday???

Laura :worship: simply amazing...if I'm not mistaken, she is the youngest Junior Wimbledon singles champion since Martina Hingis in 1994. She is also the first brit to win since Anabel Croft in 1984...

Hopefully she can be a beacon for women's tennis in Britain in years to come...it's obvious why, she was born in Australia  ... jks

Noppawan, a great tournament, hope you now step it up in seniors a bit more

a lot of people are saying this, but i just cant see it! i think the only similarity is that they are both left handed. she doesnt add all the spin to her forehand that schnyder does, its more flat. in terms of looks, i think she looks like ana ivanovic

BTW don't be such a drama queer. i don't hate her. she has nothing for me to hate. if i wanna throw a hate on some players, they must be good enouth not just a junior slam winner who happened to win @ their home country. you know the way she played here for the first time and won doesn't mean she is the next big thing. she could be someone who ends up out of top 500 for the rest of her career. get over it.

BTW don't be such a drama queer. i don't hate her. she has nothing for me to hate. if i wanna throw a hate on some players, they must be good enouth not just a junior slam winner who happened to win @ their home country. you know the way she played here for the first time and won doesn't mean she is the next big thing. she could be someone who ends up out of top 500 for the rest of her career. get over it.

im sorry i couldnt be bothered to read what you wrote. i was too busy laughing at you for calling a 14 year old girl an arrogant **** :wavey:

all i said to you was that you are pathetic for calling a 14 year old girl an arrogant ****. end of story :wavey:

Amazing. I expect to hear a lot more about her. From what I saw of the match, she's oozing with potential.

She is. And she really looks like Ana Ivanovic to me, so she could be an all round ideal player in future years if she delivers.

What kind of world would it be if we couldnt celebrate or at least congratulate young players on a great achievement until they were top 5 grand slam champions?

To win the junior title with the insane British pressure beginning to mount at the age of 14 is a great achievement and nobody can really say otherwise.

SHE IS. END OF STORY.

Then I feel sad for you, tuna, because I am not a fan of her, but she's a real deal, you will see a lot more of her in the future, not gonna be easy for you to tolerate an 'arrogant ****'.

And to be honest, even if she really is arrogant, she has every reason to be arrogant, like, she's only 14, it's her 1st Grand Slam, and she still managed to win it! You have to give time to her to become more mature, I mean it's not like you're always nice and you're not only 14:o... Please take it as no offence but I've found you really annoying recently.

I think she did play amazingly well, and whoever wins the girls singles final at wimbledon does seem to be a top 30 player at least. I think she will def. get there one day, but it will be at least 3-5 years down the track.

Sam said the same thing on BBC - that Laura reminded her of Ana. I'm not sure if she meant her looks or her game.

Yeah, reminded me of Bartoli's serve.

I thought exactly the same thing. Well - Marion's serve action at the moment anyway. She seems to change it every few months. Of course - Marion's actual serve she delivers is much harder and better.

I am not whining. And I think she is a real deal because she has a great game, not because she won WO.
That's true many 'weal ass' girls won junior slams and they just disappear afterwards, but if you look at the record carefully, people who win junior slams at such young age, like only 14 or 15, always will go places. And again, I am NOT, I repeat, NOT a fan of her, if there is any 94' born I like, it's Daria Gavrilova, but I have to admit at this point I see more potential in Robson because she has more weapons.

It's funny you talk about ignore function, how about YOU using it and stop whining? And I am not whining, I am just trying to tell you you're being an @ssh0le, I am now done telling to you to become 'normal'. So keep arguing with others if you like.

Congrats to her.
I didnt see the match, but I saw her interview, and she seemed a lovely girl. If I hadnt of known she was only 14 I would have guessed older than that.

I thought it was funny how she said her letter from Marat was better than the trophy (all in good fun of course :p)

I think that it was a brilliant achievement for Laura to win this tournament as she is so inexperienced and was the youngest competitor in the tournament and over two years younger than the likes of Oudin, Tabakova and Lertcheewakarn. She also had to face the expectations of the British media and a huge crowd.

Laura is surely set for stardom as she is the youngest junior winner of a grand slam since the days of Hingis and in fact is the only top 100 junior player born in 1994. I just hope that she gets good coaching and is able to continue her success both in junior and senior events over the next few years.

She is now number 5 on the junior rankings and has fewer points to defend than some of the others so she could go higher. She will be highly seeded in the US Open juniors and the Orange Bowl.

Presumably she will carrying on playing junior tennis for most of the next 12 months as the Age Elibility Rule means that the possibilities for her playing senior events is limited. Still it makes sense for her to play a few 10k events this year and even dip her feet into the odd 25k as she will presumably be eligible for Junior Exempts into 25ks and above next year and also there is that Wimbledon wild card too.

I just hope that she can translate this success on to other surfaces, but her clay results look very respectable so I am hopeful.
Of course, given the restrictions, it is very hard for players to get into the top 100 before they are 17 these days as before that, they are restricted both in terms of the number of tournaments they can play and the wild cards they can accept, so the media will have to be patient as a Hingis style world no 1 ranking at 16 is impossible nowadays.

She's not playing US Open Juniors because she cant play too many events because of her age and she wants to play Australian Open and the warm up events instead.

She didn't come out of nowhere. There's been talk about her for a while now before Wimbledon.

Yes but I don't think anybody expected her to win such a big event so soon. She has been incredibly consistent but I didn't think she would do this well against older players for another year.

Very sweet victory. Now if the Ren sisters start shaping up, things could be get very interesting for British tennis.
