To my dispointed, only one hundred fans welomed Jie Zheng in beijing this afternoon, although Jie have just made great success in WO,and most of them came from media \ sponsor and CTA.maybe 32 yuan to airport is one obstacle.
on the other hand, this is not unusual. olympic gold is more important than grand slam , semifinal not has much value.
because only a few people play tennis, most people donot know the diffrence betwin grand slam and open game.
in china the most popular sport is football , although the chinese male team never win a important game.
other sport like table tennis, diving is more popular than tennis.
china tennis still have long way to do

I dont think that this telling us anything about Jie or tennis popularity in China. Simple, in China not exist tradition of spontanios celebrations or gatherings. I'm sure that if some officials from China Government or city of Beijing organize "meeting of support" to Jie and her Wimbledon 2008 success, that many people will come (even without Zheng!) b/c she is enough popular there right now (IMO).

Commentator said over 100.000.000 chinese people attended Jie's QF match. That would've probably doubled in the SF.
Don't say she or tennis is not popular in China.

What's Wimbledon? If Jie wins at the Olympics, then she'll be a hero.

So this wasn't a big deal in China? Nothing like Yao Ming in the NBA?

The sad truth about tennis in China....

1) Ping Pong
2) Badminton
3) Basketball (Because of Yao Ming)
.....
.....
10) Computer games
....
....
50) Some village folk game
....
....
???) Tennis

Sigh... if she was a citizen of my country, you will be seeing a huge welcoming party with the Ministry of Sport waiting diligently for her at the Arrival terminal to celebrate this achievement....

Jie, you deserve much better than this... nevermind, once you win the Olympics, your welcoming party would be 100 times much bigger than the one you have now ;)

Chinese women's national volleyball team is definitely more popular than tennis in China.

Even the Chinese national volleyball league is more popular than tennis, especial some matches among top teams.

Sometimes a new star can make a sensation, like Mirza in India.
I guess that didn't happen .

for some so_called professional chinese tennis fan , they would like to see Lina or Peng Shuai entered the semifinal of WO than Jie, they think Lina and Peng is higher and stronger and more talent. I must say they are vert stupid.
in fact Jie 's performance is under_estimated in china.

Since when are Grand Slam semi-finalists welcomed by fans at airports? Was there any people waiting for Schuettler in Germany?
