It seems the current top 7 players all have a chance to be #1, I am actually not so clear about the ranking points, but the competition for #1 is really ferocious!:eek:

Sharapova or Serena. I feel like Ana is going to have a Maria 2004-esque slump after winning her first slam. Serena has an ambitious fall schedule. If # 1 is in reach, she'll gun for it. (Which it will be, it is in reach even if she loses to Venus on Saturday).

It really depends on who wins the USO.

Dinara also has a good chance, currently #6 in the race (though this will go down). Aga also has a bit of a shot, and so does Vera, but all these two are highly unlikely.

As it stands, Jelena, Ana, and Serena have the best shot to be #1 at the end of the year.
Then Maria.
Then Elena.
Then Svetlana/Dinara/Venus.
Then Vera/Agnieszka.

Everyone else is already way too far behind in points.

My money is either on Ana or Maria, with Serena or Venus closely behind.

Jelena and Sveta are longshot odds... while Dementieva.... I dunno, possibly 100/1 odds? :scratch:

Ivanovic, Sharapova, or Jankovic. S. Williams and Dementieva would be my next in line to finish #1 if Kuznetsova doesn't get her shit together. If she does then I'd put her with the second league of Williams/Dementieva.

I love how it's all between these six players. Very exciting.

I don't see any serb being able to keep the top because they aren't consistant and good enough.

With a Wimbledon title, she's more consistant than Maria/Ana. ^^

PLEASE not JJ or Sveta PLEASE. For the sake of women's tennis, lets try not to have another number 1. Serena has a great shot, but Venus, I doubt unfortunately.

Ana and a slump? 1 or 2 bad tournaments that's it. That was it at her 1st slam, after that, and I still think there won't be any slump in the near future.

The US Open winner is indeed a great candidate for the #1 rank.

Venus has a shot, she only played one hardcourt event last year, but plans to play 3 this year, could win USO this year, and if she plays the indoor season she will get more points.
It could happen.:p

Ana will have a slump yes, she isn't mature yet, she still talks and thinks like a 18 yo. And she does these stupid remarks that always get back at her very fast.

If she doesn't grow up and become more arrogant like Venus or Serena, she could end up like Clijsters. And that's a huge possibility. Being nice is good, but not too nice.

Dementieva or Ivanovic :dance:

Dementieva number 1? She's already going down 1 place on the ranking next monday. She will max get to the top 3.

Unless she steals Serena Williams Serve and start acing everyone off the court, and we don't see that happening.

Say Serena loses the final. Elena's 21 points away from being #5 again. Outperform Serena for the rest of the year and she'll stay above Serena. They're both only 700 or so points away from taking Ana's #1, but we have to keep in mind Ana, Jelena, Maria, and Svetlana can only gain, just like Serena and Elena.

I'd like to think, if Serena plays of course, that Stanford is ultimately a battle of who #5 will be. If Serena loses the Wimbledon final anyway.

For "YEAR END" projections is best to use just 2008 results and nothing else.

Here is next monday's YEC/2008 RACE:

1. Serena Williams USA 2765pts (8) - Wimb/08 Winner
1. Ana Ivanovic SRB 2761pts (10)
2. Jelena Jankovic SRB 2645pts (12)
3. Serena Williams USA 2465pts (8) - Wimb/08 Runnerup
4. Maria Sharapova RUS 2455pts (8)
5. Elena Dementieva RUS 2051pts (11)
6. Svetlana Kuznetsova RUS 1821pts (11)
7. Venus Williams USA 1766pts (8) - Wimb/08 Winner
7. Agnieszka Radwanska POL 1727pts (15)
8. Dinara Safina RUS 1723pts (13)
9. Vera Zvonareva RUS 1523pts (13)
10. Venus Williams USA 1466pts (8) - Wimb/08 Runnerup

...others... LESS THAN 1000pts

But like we know only 17 results can count for players record and now after about 60% of season 3 players played just 8 and some players already played 15 tournaments. So for good final ranking projection i count for all this players 2008 seasons best 10 results... so if player played 13 tournaments so far i'm cut-off 3 worce her results from this season. For current Year End projection i simple product this TOP10 results with 1.7 and here is results of this calculations:

PLAYER . . . . . . . . . . . . avg. pts per tournament . . . . . . . . Year ending Ranking projection
1. Serena Williams USA 345.6pts (8) TOP10==>BEST17: 2765==>4700
1. Ana Ivanovic SRB 276.1pts (10) TOP10==>BEST17: 2761==>4693
2. Jelena Jankovic SRB 220.4pts (12) TOP10==>BEST17: 2505==>4258
3. Serena Williams USA 308.1pts (8) TOP10==>BEST17: 2465==>4190
4. Maria Sharapova RUS 306.9pts (8) TOP10==>BEST17: 2455==>4173
5. Elena Dementieva RUS 186.5pts (11) TOP10==>BEST17: 2050==>3485
6. Svetlana Kuznetsova RUS 165.5pts (11) TOP10==>BEST17: 1820==>3094
7. Venus Williams USA 220.8pts (8) TOP10==>BEST17: 1766==>3002
7. Dinara Safina RUS 132.5pts (13) TOP10==>BEST17: 1652==>2808
8. Agnieszka Radwanska POL 115.1pts (15) TOP10==>BEST17: 1615==>2745
9. Venus Williams USA 183.3pts (8) TOP10==>BEST17: 1466==>2492
10. Vera Zvonareva RUS 117.2pts (13) TOP10==>BEST17: 1434==>2437
^^^ Serena and Venus projection depending on tommorows final result.

So it's very close batle right now for every of TOP5 places.

US open will decide. Assuming Serena wins tomorrow, it is very likely someone will win a 2nd GS. That + solid results elswhere ought to be enough.

I've said SO MANY MANY MANY times that Ana gets stronger out of every bad loss. She made it to nr 1 at age of 20 and already won Indian Wells and Roland Garros.
2006 wasn't a good year and maybe you can call it a slump. But not at 1 other point she had it in her career. And it won't be that way either in the future.
I repeat it again and again. Everytime people doubt about it.
She will prove it.

Year end has nothing to do with defending points. The Race is the best indicator but the Race also includes more than the "Best 17" formula.
