View Full Version : All-Williams Wimbledon Final III: Serena (6) or Venus (7)

Will Venus win her 5th Wimbledon, or will Serena win her 3rd?

HUGE implications for both regardless:

Venus can move up on the list of all-time Wimbledon champions, and Serena can tie Seles in GS titles won.

Who's going to get the win?

Venus, PLEASE win this for me. I can actually stand you.

Serena has this in the bad though. She'll serve her way out of trouble and she won't let herself lose.

Apparently Richard won't be attending.

I think this is Serena's match. She is 5-1 against Venus in GS Singles Finals which I think will be a big factor on Saturday.

I just have no idea whatsoever, but this is the happiest, tennis wise, that I have been in years! I voted too close to tell. In all fairness I think Serena might be at a slight disadvatage with nerves, so either Venus levels Henin on GS titles or Serena levels Seles.

Venus was right about her losses against Serena. She was suffering with wrist injuries. The last Wimbledon final they played, Venus pulled that abdominal muscle and couldn't serve over 90mph. It was horrible for Venus.

But this time it's different and Venus is feeling great. It's been several years since I've seen Venus hitting 122-127mph serves on a regular basis. And the girl is running like a gazel.

Venus is gonna easily beat Serena in two sets. Serena is seeking her 3rd Wimbledon title, but Venus is chasing Graffs, BJK, Navratalova, and Margaret Courts titles.

Venus' mission is like Tigers with Jack Nichalson

This title: All-Williams Wimbledon Final III: Serena (6) or Venus (7) is incorrect!
Serena will play in Saturday her "just" 4th Wimbledon final, so title must be:
All-Williams Wimbledon Final III: Serena (4) or Venus (7)

Since R3 i dont have any doubt that here we will watch "All-W" final so I will just copy/paste what i already say before on other thread with similar subject:

No mistery in sisters h2h... actualy better player on the day always wins. Before 2002 since younger Serena is still "upcoming player" in comparation with already established Venus and between 2002 and 2003 Serena dominated in world tour ahead all other players including her older sister:

Venus 7-6(4) 6-1 , 1998 - AUSTRALIAN OPEN
Venus 6-4 6-2 , 1998 - ROME
Venus 6-1 4-6 6-4 , 1999 - MIAMI
Serena 6-1 3-6 6-3 , 1999 - GS CUP
Venus 6-2 7-6(3) , 2000 - WIMBLEDON
Venus 6-2 6-4 , 2001 - US OPEN
------------------------------------------
Serena 6-2 6-2 , 2002 - MIAMI
Serena 7-5 6-3 , 2002 - FRENCH OPEN
Serena 7-6(4) 6-3 , 2002 - WIMBLEDON
Serena 6-4 6-3 , 2002 - US OPEN
Serena 7-6(4) 3-6 6-4 , 2003 - AUSTRALIAN OPEN
Serena 4-6 6-4 6-2 , 2003 - WIMBLEDON
------------------------------------------
Venus 6-1 7-6(8) , 2005 - MIAMI
Venus 7-6(5) 6-2 , 2005 - US OPEN
Serena 6-3 3-6 7-6(4) , 2008 - BANGALORE

Talking about upcoming final i give to both sisters same 50% chances. Grass is only surface where Venus is better player than Serena, but Ree is in better shape player this season and which is most important she needs to win just one set to win whole match, because Venus in last two seasons is not able anymore to play 3rd set on same level (unlike Serena). So my final prediction is:

Venus in two - 40%
Serena in three - 30%
Serena in two - 20%
Venus in three - 10%

So Serena have "fitnes" edge on Venus, not "mental" (reason why she won 4 of theirs 5 three-seters so far) which is even more case now in 2008 than in past! Venus WTA tour 3-setters h2h vs TOP10 is just 1 win of 8 matches since 2007 (in same period Serena have good 3-set 6-1 h2h record vs TOP10). So Venus "only" advantage is fact that she is better grasscourt player, and nothing else ;).

So i will be very surprised if Serena win in straight sets - and shocked if Venus wins in three!

Serena´s Serve looks amazing.
Venus was in trouble with that today.
I think Venus should try to close the match as soon as possible she can (2 sets), in 3 sets Serena has more stamina to win.

Jul 3rd, 2008, 07:09 PM
seriously i'm so happy about this. In 2006 when I was following both sisters another sister slam final seemed so impossible and so far away. so :bounce: i'm already happy. After losing in the same round in the last 2 slams this is so great!!

I was cheering for Serena in Bangalore. But here I think kinda want Venus to win more. Because I feel like Serena can win any of the other slams while Venus has the ability to win the other slams she just doesn't seem able to bring her best game in the other slams other than the USO. And I kinda like that Venus has this one tournament where she can lord it over Serena. But i feel like Serena needs the win as well.

I'll prolly be cheering for whoever's down at the moment. I hope it's as exciting as their bangalore match but w/ less UE.

I voted the 3rd option cuz really I just want an exciting high quality 3 set match.

If Venus wants to win or wants to challenge Serena in 3 sets, she needs to cut down her errors and stop playing with too much power, because it causes an error every single stroke.

I just want a semi decent matches. I don't care about drama. I want a good quality match which is something the two have never delivered although the second set of their 2005 Miami match was kinda good. Venus cant afford her bouts of bad play and her sometimes terrible bp conversion rate because she probably wont get that many opportunities. I'm hoping Venus in two i cant take the stress of Venus three setters these days.

I agree actually. If it were anyone else on tour, I'd say that they were toast against Venus in a Wimbledon final.

I disagree about your reasons for the probability of a three set loss for Venus and there I think it is both mental and physical. In three-setters, Venus' technique starts to break down + it means that Serena will have fought like hell to take it to three. Venus seems to back down when Serena starts fighting like that and that part is mental.

Serena always feels she has something to prove when she is playing Venus and gives it her absolute all. Her facial expression said it all, when Marion said last year that Venus was #1 on grass. Venus shrinks away when she sees that grit and determination coming from Serena, and loses concentration. But perhaps since she sees Wimbledon as her turf, she won't back down. And the last two times they played here in the final, she was injured (shoulder in 2002) and (ab strain in 2003).

Let's go Venus, make it five. This your house!

I go with Serena.

She impressed me a lot more than Venus at this Wimbledon. Venus even against very error prone and idiosyncratic Dementieva had too many errors and patches of passive play.

But because this is an internal Williams family affair anything can happen. I would be happy with either outcome.

And, what is beyond discussion, both sisters are deservedly in the Final.

Serena is just too strong. Venus will have to get a lot of first serves in and cut down on unforced errors to have a chance. I love them both, but I have to go with Serena here. Between the two, she is the form player this year having won 3 titles to Venus' 0

It seems to me that this is Venus' match to lose. BUT, she better be ready to fight for it. She needs to channel the fight she showed in the Wimbledon 2005 final.

In fact, the matchup is very similar: Linds had a more consistent serve, making her hard to break. Venus was able to rip a few first serves right past her, was more vulnerable on second serve, but had superior movement.

In that close of a match, Venus refused to die and she needs to bring that exact same attitude to the court on Saturday. I hope she does. She deserves to solidify her record as one of the all-time great grass court players.

This is a tough one.

I want Serena to win and tie with Seles.

but Venus needs the win more so she can:
-win Wimbledon for the first time without dropping a set.
-successfully defend a Grand Slam title for the first time since 2001.
-catch up Henin in Grand Slams
-defend her ranking points from last year,
-join an elite group of individuals who have won Wimbledon five times,
-win her first title of 2008
-climb into one of the 8 spots in the Sony Ericsson Championships Race.
-promote her clothing line, Eleven, further by posing with the 2008 Wimbledon trophy.
- Level the overall H2H with Serena at 8-8.
- try to level the record of Grand Slam finals both have played in. It is currently 5-2 in Serena's favour.

Whover wins it will be a joy to see. :)

I'm happy with either but I think Serena in 3. I think their second serves will most likely be the deciding factor. Venus's can be attacked, Serena's can't.

Well.. Serena is serving great, but Venus is one of the better returners on tour and she's handled the biggest servers here in teh past 3 years.

Serena's movement will doom her. If Venus can keep it together for 2 sets, she should win.

If this were anywhere but Wimbledon, Serena would be the heavy favorite. However, Venus owns this place and it's her match to lose.

i do hope it will be venus. i mean, serena's game was so painful to watch today, really. she is an excellent server, that's true, but whenever it came to actual tennis game, she was mostly mediocre and sometimes hopeless against jie. b-o-r-i-n-g. and i couldn't help but wonder, are they people who actually like this kind of game she showed today?

venus ain't my favorite, but she'll be a decent winner, deserved.

I think Venus better gets this in 2. Venus can't last the distance 3 sets anymore (although this is grass, her favourite, with shorter rallies) unlike Serena. So I would say Venus in 2 or Serena in 3.

I want Serena to win this because I want her to go double digits in slams so if she wins she'll have 9 and will be closer. But I want her to win here and then I want Venus to win the US Open.

And Serena always peaks in finals so we'll see.
Anyways I'll be happy with the conclusion of the match I mean one of my girls is gonna win Wimbledon, I couldn't be happier.

Venus is gonna easily beat Serena in two sets. Serena is seeking her 3rd Wimbledon title, but Venus is chasing Graffs, BJK, Navratalova, and Margaret Courts titles.

Venus' mission is like Tigers with Jack Nichalson

Serena is also chasing Graf, BJK, Seles, Navratilova, and all the all-time great. Venus is chasing Wimbledon glory, Serena is chasing the Hall of Fame and record books.

LOL. Serena and Venus will be in the HOF regardless of what happens tomorrow or even if neither wins another title again. And they have plenty of records firm in their grip.

I'm seriously and anxiously cheering for Venus but her record against Serena in big matches has not been stellar. Everything else says she would win on Saturday but this is Serena.

Venus plays soooo confidently at Wimbledon - much better than at any other tournament. Her game is absolutlely perfect for grass. She must be the best grass court player since Navratilova (and I say that as a huge Graf fan, but Steffi was the undisputed best all rounder in terms of 4+ wins at each slam)
Venus has the edge over Serena as a grass court player IMO because of her superior reach, but Serena is an amazing player too, and often seems to out battle her big sis. The main hope is for a good match. Sadly, there have not been enough classics between them at Wimbledon, for whatever reason. They are head and shoulders the best players at Wimbledon 2008 and deserve to contest the final, but I'm rooting for Venus in 2. If it goes to a third, Serena's greater fighting qualities might do it.

According to UK bookmakers betting odds for Saturday final is:

Serena - 1.80
Venus -- 2.00

I see here some logic (better season and better h2h in GS finals), but honestly i expected even more close numbers (like 1.85/1.95 or even 1.90/1.90) because Venus is defending champion and "grass queen".

Well, Serena is 6-0 after the QF stage of a tournament this year so , 2-0 vs. Venus in Wimbledon Finals, and she won their last meeting

Here is what I think:

If serena wins, she will move closer to becoming an all-time tier one great! So I really want her to win this!! :worship:

If Venus wins, she will win as many GS titles as Justine and hopefully less people will consider justine to be greater than her

Also, Venus needs more points, so she needs the title more!!

However, if Serena wins, she will be in the front of the race and may reclaim the no 1 spot!!

so pretty much both of them really need this win, geeezz cant they just give the championship to both???

I hope Venus wins: in my opinion, if she adds a fifth title on saturday, she'll still have a chance to reach Billie Jean King and Suzanne Lenglen with six, and to tie Steffi with seven titles (otherwise, accomplishing these achievements become more complicated because of her age). Now that would mean LEGEND :)

Plus, Wimbledon is her "home", much like the AO is for Serena.

Serena in 3...Serena has been longing for a 3rd wimbledon since 2004 and pissed she didnt get it..so she's been taking it out on Sharapova since then LOL I think she's going to cease the moment and get this one on lock. :) I love both of them though...I LOVE IT...ALL WILLIAMS FINAL 2008 BABY!!!! I hope that the match is long and competitive. If Venus realizes that she has to beat Serena at the net then she may win in three sets.
