Ok so the nominated players are Justine, Maria, and Ana. Now Im not trying to hate on either one of them but arent these nominations based on 2007? If so how are Maria and mainly Ana nominated over Venus and Serena

Beats me. Or they included the results of 2008 until FO?

InsideOut.

For 2007? Neither Maria or Ana should win that. Maria sucked in 2007. Ana didn't do anything truly spectacular either. Justine HANDS-DOWN.

Why Ana is there only God knows:lol:They always nominated 3 players even if winner is obvious like Henin after last season results. Serena played last season just three months (between AO and Miami) and same case with Venus (between Wimbledon and USO). Maria started and finished season with good results (finals of AO and YEC) but rest of season is total disaster for her standards (except San Diego and RG). Kuznetsova and Jankovic reach #2 and #3 at end of season, but except Sveta USO final (+1 tier-II title) and JJ 2 tier-I titles (+1 GS SF) they dont have any impressive result to be mentoned. Ana Ivanovic with slam final and semifinal, tier-I title and final and 2 tier-II titles with by far most TOP10 wins after Henin is "real #2" last season, so she deserved this nomination. Only thing which i never understand about Espys award is how Sharapova reach this award for 2006 season ahead double slam champion Mauresmo and Henin which reach all-4 GS finals (+RG title)?

joćo.

Even if Maria would be like #20 she would probably still be nominated because she's Sharapova. :weirdo:

Usually when the average person talks about Maria, they see her as an attractive gal who can win grand slams and the same as Ana. A lot of my male friends joke about the William sisters in a negative way, i'll just leave it as that. I mean its wrong but its just public perspection.

Your friends must be red necks.

Most of my friends are black and they as well as other people I know also speak negatively about the Williams sisters (mostly their appearance). I wont go into further details but this is why i would never bring Venus or Serena into a conversation with them. When I red posts about them on blogs (urban blogs) they are also some negative comments. Everything isn't about race.

I just voted (here is link (http://promo.espn.go.com/espn/specialsection/espys2008/#/voting/), but you must register at ESPN before voting). It's litle boring because must to vote more than 30 categories and about 90% of candidates is related with USA.

It's definetly about 2nd half of 2007 and 1st half of 2008 b/c in Nadal and Ivanovic profile they notice like most important RG/2008 win!

WTA stars is involved in next categories:
BEST FEMALE TENNIS PLAYER: Justine Henin, Maria Sharapova, Ana Ivanovic
BEST BREAKTROUGH ATHLETE: Ana Ivanovic with some NCAA player, NASCAR Driver and NFL Rookie
BEST INTERNATIONAL FEMALE ATHLETE: Justine Henin with some Golf(MEX), Soccer(BRA) and WNBA(AUS)
BEST CHAMPIONSHIP PERFORMANCE: Venus Williams for Wimbledon/07 with Nadal RG/08, Tiger Woods and some MLB Pitcher.

Only thing which i never understand about Espys award is how Sharapova reach this award for 2006 season ahead double slam champion Mauresmo and Henin which reach all-4 GS finals (+RG title)?
Its awarded by voting, so popularity and name recognition is big. The overwhelming majority that vote will not give a rats ass about tennis, so if they see Sharapova, Mauresmo, Henin, most voters will have heard the name Sharapova, maybe not the others in 2006. Sad, but true. And i think the timeframe for the nominees is since the last Espys.

maria is going to win. ana has a chance, but not really because not many non-tennis fans know her (yet), while everyone knows maria (her commercial is seriously overplayed)

WTF are the ridiculous bryan brothers doing nominated???

because they need some americans in each category (except the international one...and btw, maria is like an unofficial american really)

The overwhelming majority that vote will not give a rats ass about tennis, so if they see Sharapova, Mauresmo, Henin, most voters will have heard the name Sharapova, maybe not the others in 2006. Sad, but true. And i think the timeframe for the nominees is since the last Espys.I must change my statement about Maria in 2007 b/c now it's obvious that for voting is relevant not 2006 season when Henin and Mauresmo have clean advantage in comparation with Sharapova - it's about 2nd half of 2006 and 1st half of 2007. If we look players results in that period Mauresmo have just one slam title (Wimbledon/06) and her deep slump is started since start of 2007. Henin have also one slam title (RG/07) and two finals (Wimbledon/06 and USO/06), but b/c divorce problems miss some part of 2007 (including AO/07). Maria have also 1 title (US Open/06) and one final (AO/07) and also she have Wimby semifinal and career best RG/07 SF, and also dont forget her summer of 2006 (between august and october) is so far her most impressive period with several tournament in the row without single lose. Probably Justine still deserve more that award, but still it's not big scandal that Sharapova reach, like if case that only 2006 is counting.

Same thing here - if Maria or Ana wins this award for results in 2nd half of 2007 and 1st half of 2008 season ahead Henin it's not so big injustice like in case that this award is only for 2007. If we look results in last 12 months (between Wimbledon/07 and RG/08) Sharapova won Australian Open 2008, San Diego/07, Doha/08 and 1 tier-II, with YEC final. Ivanovic won Roland Garros 2008 with AO/08 final and Wimbledon/07 SF and Indian Wells/08 and 2 tier-II wins. Henin Won USO/07 and reach Wimbledon/07 SF with YEC/07, Toronto/07, Zurich/07 and 3 tier-II titles. So it's close batle because after impressive 2nd half of 2007 Henin 2008 season is disaster and Ana and Maria have very good results in 2008 and good in 2007 2nd part.

Henin still probably deserve this season award and that is reason why is only Justine of WTA players nominated for "BEST INTERNATIONAL FEMALE ATHLETE" but if win Maria or Ana it not be so big scandal if we look what happen in last 6 months especialy.
