It's still very, very early in her career, but I wanted to start a cheering thread for young Croatian player Ema Mikulcic. She recently turned 16 years old (born in April 1992).

The reason I'm starting a thread for her now is because she'll be entering the rankings for the first time the week after Wimbledon. In April she won her first-round MD match at the $10K in Hvar. In May she did the same thing at the $10K in Mostar. This week she qualified for the $10K in Sarajevo and has won her first-round MD match. That means she now has ranking points from three tournaments, which is the minimum necessary to be ranked. She only has three points (one from each tournament) so she'll enter at the very bottom of the rankings, around #1050. Still, it's a promising start.

Let's wish young Ema good luck in her career!

Ema will move up to a new CH ranking of ~720 (currently 797).

Next match is against the #2 seed, Gatto-Monticone (#289). I'll be shocked if Ema wins, but this was still a very good week for her, reaching the SF and picking up 6 points.

In her only two tournaments this year so far she has earned as many points (14) as she did all last year in 9 tournaments.

And she is now on a 7 match losing streak ..
Anyway, nice achievement today; she and Isaeva ( who is a horrible player ) managed to lose doubles against a 42 year old French club player and an 18 year old unranked who she trains ..
Really sad, Ema is my generation and I remember her since we were kids and played same tournaments .. I really thought she could make something, but honestly she didnt not improve a bit in the last 3-4 years ..
Just like in the Njiric case, I think its time to end this a perhaps try college tennis ..

Yes, Ema did lay a couple of eggs during that losing streak, but in her defense she also drew some tough opponents, and kept it close against some of them:

+ Camerin (top 200, CH 41; lost in three)
+ Jurikova (CH top 196; lost 57 in third)
+ Lottner (juniors CH 3, last year)

For a spot in the SF, she plays a very talented junior, Jokic. Better than playing the #2 seed, Curovic, who retired against Jokic.

She's #12 on the MD acceptance list. However, she'll go up in the rankings after this week's win, so she just might grab a seeded spot.

I'm not sure about that, cause her points from Bron won't be added until next week as it's a 10k...

In the opening round she took care of Stamatova, a Bulgarian with a current ranking of 529 and a career-high one of 504, it was 4:6, 6:3, 6:3.

Probably a bit tougher than most of us expected, but a win is a win I guess. Maybe she just needs a few sets to settle into her rhythm.

Next round should be a bit easier, Landener is a 19 y.o. qualifier who's never made it past #1050.

It'll be interesting to see how far can Ema go this season. Last year she entered 21 event in total and earned 81 points (3,85 avg.) - this year she earned 19 points from just 4 events (4,75 avg.). Even with just keeping this pace, that would mean ending the year in the 390's but I think she can do much better.

Hopefully she can make it into AO Q-draw next year, eventhough it's a long shot. She needs roughly 250 in total to make it, or around 230 more by the end of the year. But if you consider she won just 14 points in 2011, 44 in 2012 and 81 in 2013, who is to say that with a bit of luck she can't make it. It's at least a nice goal to aim at, and you also never know with the AO line-up, which ends up being quite weak every few years.

Anyway, just throwing some random thoughts on her day off...;)

Chiasso 25k, QR2:

(7)Ema Mikulcic def. Imane Maelle Kocher (19 y.o., wta 817, c-h 639) 6:4, 7:5

Main draw:

[3]S. Vogt vs. (Q)A.-G. Remondina
C. Dentoni vs. (Q)E. Mikulcic

Dentoni is a former top 150 player (c-h 132), but her w-l record this year is 1-3 (ranking has tumbled down to outside 300) and she hasn't played in the last two months (injury?) so this is actually a nice chance for Ema IMO.

Next up is Kapshay (the 7th seed) who has won 12 of her last 14 matches so is obviously, eventhough her last tournament was two weeks ago, in a really good form. This'll be their first encounter.

But no matter what happens next, Ema had a great week - she is the only unseeded player in the semifinals of Minsk. Hopefully she'll give a good performance with as little pressure as possible :)

In the next two weeks she'll be defending some points and could fall back quite a bit if she doesn't play, but if she keeps her form at current level (or improves a bit) for the rest of the year, there are no worries.

^ Lost to Zalabska 06 in the third :help:

But in MD R1 Zalabska drew the top seed, Cetkovska

Zalabska is a very good player, but for last 5-6 years she is a part time tennis player .. she prefered education stuff, when she decided to play 10ks in Antalya for a month she was slaughtering with Jaksic in finals .. good player, flat shots, very agressive and ... crazy as fuck .. And I dont mean to say she gets angry on court she is literally insane

Nice win for Ema--and a $25K QF and most likely a new CH ranking.

Pervak will be very tough--Ema's highest-ranked opponent ever?--but it'll be very good experience for Ema.

She won first set 6:4, it seems it is very hard fight with endless breaks of serve for both girls.

From 2-0 to 2-6 :sobbing:

But nice effort from Ema to take Pervak to three sets. Her game and her career have been progressing gradually and steadily (reminds me of Mrdeza's). Let's see how high she can rise. Top 250? Top 200?

Her next tournament will be $15,000 Leipzig and she will be seeded there.

Unfortunetly since 2-3 in third, she had empty tank, until she played very well and if she keep this level of game, will reach 200 very soon.

Leykina vs. Von Deichmann

^ Convincing scoreline!

Ponomar is only 17 and I hadn't heard of her before but I became concerned when I saw on her profile that she has quite a few top-500 wins this year, many in straight sets: Kudermetova, Eraydin (63 62), Skamlova (63 64), Celik (63 75), Jurikova, Kubicikova (75 63), Gorgodze (60 62!).

R2 is against Lukacs (#480), so a good chance to make a $15K QF. Good luck!

Great result for her this week!

You kind of expect a 5th seed to make it to the QF, but an SF is already quite something.

This could put her around 275 region and she has no serious points to defend until late October.

Things are looking nice for her :) Good luck tomorrow!

vladekCRO

*1-4

Ozgen has 5 aces in two service games

1-5* :o

Ozgen is saving BP's with aces and Ema just gifted break with two DF's in a row.gfe

First set goes to Ozgen 1-6, Ema totally collapsed after not using 5 BP's in one game . . . and Pemra already has 7 aces (1 DF), while Ema hit one ace and 3 DF's.
