It's going to mean high profile players get to play as scheduled.
And the rank and file wait for the rains to stop.
It's good for the fans. Bad for players who aren't deemed to be worthy of a show court

I like it, but I'm going to miss the Wimbledon that I've been used to seeing for the past ten years. But I realize how necessary the roof was, so it's a win/win situation.

The retractable roof isn't on until next year.

I think those who don't like it would probably have the same arguments as goldenlox. It just makes it competition a bit unfair towards lower ranked players.

I like it! I definitely wasn't a fan of the stadium with the roof ripped off last year.

The lower ranked players don't get to play on centre court anyway...that goes for all tournaments (with or without rooved courts). Most of the time a lower ranked player plays centre court it means that they're going to lose. Given the choice I'm sure they'd rather wait around on the rain and play some other low ranked player on an outside court!

Jebi se you say the retractable roof isn't on until 2009? This roof doesn't open and close? So basically we have the 2006 roof again!?

No they added an extra tier. The old stadium wasn't strong enough structurally to hold a roof so they had to redesign it. The 'full' roof wont be finished until next year :)

For this year they built necessary structure that can support retractable roof which will be installed for next year Wimby ;)
So, basically it'll be the same as every year before rain wise

The first press release said 2010 as finishing date. And now they say early 2009. So it's fast enough.

I love the new roof at Centre Court. It gives it a nice modern look to go along with the classical look with the rest of the court.

The best thing about the roof is that it means that from 2009 there will be no more rain during Wimbledon. Why? Sod's law. As soon as you build a roof there is no need for it, just as when you remember to take your umbrella it doesn't rain. ;)

I don´t think I´ve ever seen such a smashing result: 98.06%!!!
But it´s very beautiful this new roof, finally no rain in Wimbledon next year!

poor Jankovic  oh wait, there still is a medical time out.

It would not only benefit Jankovic perse...

In the past, champions have benefited from a suspended play due to raining.
I remember Graf was one, also Serena last year...and many others!

the roof will be translucent, so there probably wont be a lot of extra lighting

which means they probably won't play any later than normal

will the sound of rain on the glass roof be annoying during play ?

The roof is made of a fabric not glass.

From wimbledon.org: (http://aeltc.wimbledon.org/en_GB/about/guide/longtermplan.html#future)

The retractable roof over Wimbledon’s Centre Court is a type of ‘folding fabric concertina’.

This allows the roof to be folded into a highly compressed area when not in use over the court. About 5,200 square metres of a very strong and flexible, translucent waterproof material will be used for the roof.

A key element of the design has been to allow natural light to reach the grass, while an airflow system will remove condensation from within the bowl to provide the optimum internal environment for the comfort of spectators and players when the roof is closed.

The roof has been designed to close/open in under 10 minutes and will be closed primarily to protect play from inclement (and, if necessary, extremely hot) weather during The Championships.

Play will be suspended while the roof closes/opens before being resumed once both the court surface and bowl have attained the optimum conditions for players and spectators.

This process will take between 10-30 minutes depending on the prevailing climatic conditions.
