poor Mashona. She might retire soon I think.

Who is this Ania Korzeniak? Is she at least young and a promising player or not?

No MASHONA has had a good comeback. She just won an ITF and it jumped her ranking over 150 spots.

I saw the last set I and must say Ania is very impressive. She doesn't really have a game that is at all suited to grass but what she does have is a great fighting spirit. This was not a match Ania looked like winning to be honest. Mashona had easily the greater weight of shot, better touch, infinitely greater grasscourt experience and she was coming into the match in greater form having recently won an ITF event in the US. In contrast Ania hadn't won a match since the start of April. Very fortunately Mashona also made by far the greater number of errors. Ania on the other hand gave Mashona absolutely nothing. She won the match by basically getting every single ball back in play that she could reach. Pretty much every point ended on a Washington winner or error. No that actually isn't totally fair. Because Ania also did counterpounch brilliantly and she did make some nifty passing shots too.

In truth, I don't honestly expect Ania to qualify. I also saw some of Stepanie Foretz's match and I can say see is play to a pretty high standard and I don't expect Ania to be up to it. Essentially Ania looks better suited to a clay surface. But I saw much in Ania's game which gives hope for the future. She adapted very well the grass bounce and she fights for everything. She's got a really good attitude. And she makes very very few bad errors. Occasionally a shot would drop too short and Mashona would kill it but overall not only did everything come back but most of it came back deep and in awkward positions. Ania isn't flashy, she doesn't hit much in the way of shots that make you go "wow" but she works hard and hits practically no stupid shots either.
