Grass.

There is NO momentum on grass. Things can change on a dime.

For women's tennis - grass consistently.

On the mens side clay.

I mean i could watch Challenger events on this. Just consistently nice matches.

clay can produce some very exciting points cuz players can get more balls back. But at the same time sometimes the tennis just gets mind numbing w/ people just playing retriever over and over again w/ points lasting forever w/ nothing exciting happening.

For women's tennis i voted grass cuz almost all the top players can play on grass and the matches have been consistently the most exciting there. but i'm a Venus fan so i guess i'm a little biased.

For the women it is grass without doubt. For the men it is pretty close between grass and clay but as this poll is for women's tennis I went decisively to grass.

Fast indoor carpet. Women's tennis is at its best, and most exciting, on fast surfaces, and the only surfaces remotely fast anymore are either grass (eh...) or indoor carpet.

Indoor carpet has the fewest classics, I suppose, since the surface doesn't have a slam, but I generally enjoy that surface the most on a consistent basis.

Carpet, then grass, then hardcourts, then clay.

Women just handle the bounce better than men and even when they are smacking the poo out of it, are able to have rallies... Unlike the men..

Clay, at least on the WTA Tour, produces errors, errors, and more errors.

Grass gives the most crisp and best quality matches.

Definitely grass, there is never alot of long rallies in womens tennis even on clay really, points are usually short, and that works best on grass.

I think they all can. I think carpet is harder to subsatine a long rally if it is quick. But they has been classic Tennis in all 4 GS.
But I would say Clay has made for bad FO womens final finals over the years I just think if you are nervous on clay it is very hard to hit your way out of it like you can on the other surfaces. But apart from that flip a coin

For me it's carpet all the way. That's where you see all the classics. The 100+ of you who voted for the other surfaces are crazy. I'm also a big fan of wood, which sadly wasn't even included in the poll... probably because the poll-maker knew it would dominate all the other options :o

So Effin true!! I cant stand Grass courts. Rallies are like 4 strokes. YAWN

For me its clay and hard courts and ive never ever ever seen carpet tennis. I dont even know what carpet is like.

santhuruu
May 19th, 2009, 10:42 AM
hardcourt, just love the bounces of the ball and the rallies are amazing on that surface, because it is quite tougher than on clay to create great rallies! Grass is a close second for me!

Agreed.... The Sampras Wimbledon era was dreadfully boring.

Ace, ace, ace, ace - got better since they slowed the courts.

For me:

Hardcourt
Clay
Carpet
Grass

Yes but this is WTA we're talking about, and as far as I can see and have seen, none of them have the Sampras ability to serve huge every point and then hit a winner off it.

I think Grass has produced many exciting matches over the years, the finals of Wimby 05, 06 and 08 being prime examples.

Grass. Followed close behind by hard. Grass > hard in my book because there are so many hardcourts around and so many tournaments on hardcourt, that you get so used to the type of tennis that will be played.

Aravanecaravan
May 19th, 2009, 01:09 PM
Like asking "Who's the best player?" this one is rife with subjectivity. All in what you get used to.

Personally, among the slams, I prefer hard courts over grass and clay because they produce consistency whereas the other surfaces do not. Too easy for a ball to hit a divot or dead spot on grass. Plus, if "excitement" means "speed", it has to be hard or indoor carpet because the grass has gotten ridiculously slow as of late.

Actually, I like Har Tru best of all because it combines the longer points of clay and the speed of hard courts and makes for some really spectacular points.

Agree.

That said the overall quality of the women's matches I've seen this year on clay has been higher than I've seen from the women on this surface in quite a few years, not withstanding a few real clinkers.
