I have a question with the olympic games coming in august. Are you going to cheer (in tennis) for your favorite player or for a player from your country?

I'll cheer for Masha first of all... and then my countrywoman Kaia if she goes there :p

Probably my player, because as far as I'm concerned the Olympics have become just another stop on the tour--and not just for tennis. Yes, it's nice that everybody gets to show up and play, but the fact is with every sport pretty much having world championships and competition year in and year out, it's going to come down to the usual suspects whether you're talking about tennis or the 100 meters.

I'm frankly much more interested in the two remaining slams, Euro 2008, the start of CONCACAAF qualifying for the World Cup 2010, FC Dallas and the Cubs pursuit of a shot at their first championship in 100 years than I am the Olympics.

I'm not generally very nationalistic and I don't think anyone from my country will be playing anyway (aside from Andy Murray in the men's competition). I also suspect most of my favourites won't be there either. No matter. I will find some players to root for. :)

It'd only be tough if Lindsay or Venus played Elena. Aside from that, kill-destroy-dominate is my mindset for Elena in Beijing since she wants it so bad. However, I kind of want Lindsay to take it since that's her biggest goal in coming back, and I'd love to see Venus do it again...

I won't be sad if Elena lost to either of them, I should say. But mostly just rooting for my favorite player.

Hmmm, with the Olympics it's tough. In a regular event, I'd definitely cheer for my favorite players over players from my country, no question. In the Olympics it's a tougher decision, but I'd probably still go with my favorite player. Only my very top favorite(s) though.

I would support a player from my country against any player! I don't know why, i'm just naturally very patriotic...if Venus or Ana were to play South, O'Brien or Baltacha...100% of the time I would soo want the brit to win, even though I like more Venus and Ana

this doesn't apply on the mens side though...I would support ANY player against Andy Murray, even Radek! :fiery:

I haven't one single bone of patriotism in my whole body. So I'll support my favorite player, especially if she meets Mauresmo :hearts:

Favourite player.

And the Olympics is more about individual achievement with the honour of representing your country thrown in. The only true test of how much their country means to a player is the Fed Cup.

So in the Fed Cup - I'd support country first - that's if we had a team up there to support. In the Fed Cup - it's the country that wins. And you play as part of a team. You get no benefit from it as a player in terms of rankings or anything. No single player from the country is singled out with a medal or a cup in the Fed Cup.

In the Olympics - the biggest honour is a personal one of winning a medal. That's the thing that's remembered. The secondary aspect that your country got say 4 golds instead of 3 or 5 silver/bronze instead of 4 gets quickly forgotten along with the difference it makes to the final table for your country.

I can't believe the overwhelming support for favourite players over countries. It's quite surprising to me.

I will be supporting my fellow countrymen and countrywomen ahead of any other competitors. Just as I'll do in all the sports during the Olympics. I hope they do themselves proud and hold themselves well, because they are representing me and my country. If these athletes are prepared to work so hard to represent my country, hence me, then the least I could do is support them whole-heartedly.

Best of luck all Aussies, have a blast and do your best

Why so surprising? Tennis is an individual sport, and many people don't start watching it because of someone from their own countyr is playing. I will cheer for Misa over any Aussie in ANY tournament, but in other sports at the Olympics (team sports) then I will cheer for Australia (and probably also for NL, but then I normally want Australia to win anyway).

Well it's probably surprising to me because I am a very patriotic person, and I love being an Australian, and Australia itself, more than anything else in the world. You, quite obviously, don't hold the same values concerning your home and where you come from, and that's up to you I suppose.

Tennis is an individual sport, but the Olympics are about representing your country. I don't agree that the Olympics should be a part of the tour, concerning ranking points, because certain players (Russians, French.. ) can't compete because of a cap on national representation. I think the honour to represent ones country is reason enough to compete in the Olympics, the implementing of ranking points just get people there competing that don't share the Olympic spirit.

I'm sorry, but you have no right to judge what my values are concerning my country from one thing! How dare you suggest that I am unpatriotic just because I woud cheer for my ONE fave player over an Aussie IF they even met in tennis at the Olympics - which is unlikely to happen anyway.
I have no idea what your second paragraph has to do with anything I said, but I also don't like points for the Olympics either so  . Just because people support their fave over their country in ONE sport doesn't mean they are unpatriotic. As I said, I would cheer for Australia in all team sports, and in pretty much every other individual sport too. So how am I unpatriotic?
