View Full Version : Original heavy hitters-who is your favorite?

Hitting big groundstrokes these days is almost required to be a top player, but less than 20 years ago, this wasn't the case. 4 women-Seles, Capriati, Pierce and Davenport all stepped into the game and began blasting winners all over the court. Which of them is your favorite?

I was tempted to go with "Damn them all! I hate ball bashing!!".

But at the end of the day I do like Seles and in the early part of her career she was so exciting to watch so I selected Monica. :)

Got into tennis in 93/94, basically thx to Pierce and Martinez, so obviously Pierce is my fave, followed by Davenport (whom I didn't like that much at the beginning of her career ) ;)

I like Sania a lot but it is as much (if not more) for the maturity and intelligence and free thinking she shows off the court as the power hitting. Sania herself knows the areas of her game she needs to develop hence doing things like playing lots of doubles and seeking out help from experienced coaches. She has a good perspective of the game of tennis, her role as an athlete and of life in general. She is a very easy girl to respect.

And I don't really hate all power hitting, I just don't like it when it isn't mixed in with anything else and is done without strategy or thought. And in fairness none of those listed fall into that category. All four are class players with a lot to their games. They might not all be favourites of mine but they certainly all have my respect.

Ok it is true a sliced shot that just grazes the net and then dies on the grass will always give me more pleasure to watch than a ball that has its cover belted off it. But there is certainly room for both.

Venus and Serena came a little bit after these 4. They left their own marks on the game too, but they didn't initiate the hard hitting trend.

hmm. I'm surprised Capriati is getting so little love?

Voted for Seles, but also love Pierce. Too bad you couldn't vote for more than one option.:(

Jun 11th, 2008, 08:42 PM
As it stands now, we have:

1. Seles-34 votes 30.09%
2. Pierce-31 votes 27.43%
3. Davenport-27 votes 23.89%
4. Love them all-11 votes 9.73%
5. Capriati-6 votes 5.31%
6. Damn them all-4 votes 3.54%

Until I found wtaworld, I never knew Pierce was so popular. I always thought Seles and Capriati had more fans then Davenport and Pierce? I realize wtaworld doesn't represent everyone, but all the hardcore wta fans are here.

Well, Serena is these days.

This is actually a good point - how "heavy" you hit depends very much from your confidence. Look at almost any Safin match these days for example - he can barely match Rochus power level because he has no confidence on his shots anymore.

I recall some early Seles-Hingis matches where Hingis actually blew Seles off the court - Hingis was supremely confident and on top of her game, whilst Seles was ailing.

articulated what i was thinking. That's how I felt about Serena last year after RG and Venus this year at the FO.

As for the poll I think Monica was the first and she prolly inspired all the big hitting that's going on now. But really i'm just glad we don't have to watch 100 pushers all day so i voted for all of them.

True, Seles was the first of these 4 on tour, but they are all close in age and I don't think she had any impact on the development of Pierce, Capriati and Davenport, who started very soon after her.

I certainly agree that if most of the girls in their teens-to early twenties on tour now were asked who was their idol, most would probably say Seles. Even Serena back in 2004 was thrilled when the press compared her to Monica, since both won their first "comeback tournament" (1995 Seles in Toronto and 2004 Serena in Miami) after long injury layoffs.

I think how heavy a ball a person hits depend on how their personal style(swinging motion), training, physical strength, and sometimes body weight and height. I wouldn't say that players like JJ don't have confidence, but they simply did not train when growing up to hit really hard. If they did, they still were not able to generate the power due to their swings.

Of course I said Mary but I was also tempted to vote for all of them because I do actually love all of them (with the possible exception of Davenport who, although I really like and admire, is not one of my top favourites).

These four women (as well as the steffi forehand) brought power tennis to the fore in the mid-90s and I remember thinking how exciting it was to watch this special brand of tennis.

Hurry back Mary because the tour sorely needs to be re-introduced to your ferocious power once more. Woo-hoo!
