As most of you may remember, last year I made a prediction that Marion Bartoli would win Wimbledon.

Most of you laughed at me, but then became scared as Marion made her way to the final knocking out seeds like Jankovic and Henin.

However, Marion fell just a little bit short.

My prediction to win Wimbledon 2008 is Nicole Vaidisova.

Is that before or after hell freezes over?

Look, I like her, but unless she bought someone else's game for the next month I can't see her winning anything. I'd be happy if she won two matches in a row.

Someone has to win it. It's very brave to choose someone on such poor form but all it takes is 2-3 wins and confidence can come flying back. On her best form, she's perfectly capable of winning it.

Nicole has the talent IMO.

With the right draw and the right seeds getting knocked out, definitely possible :)

On her best form, she's perfectly capable of winning it.
I'd agree with that.

Still don't see it happening though. :o We'll see. If she makes the QF, that will be a very good result for her given her form. Winning it all seems too far fetched.

of course its possible... she's the roddick of the wta, big serve and forehand, so could do well on grass... too many players right now are playing much better than her, so its hard to agree.. but hey you were right about marion!

You know, what made the Bartoli prediction work was that she has solid results on grass that year.

Quite ambitious. Although i am enjoying reading the Marion thread!

The Bartoli prediction of yours was pretty sussed. At the time Marion was rounding into form very nicely and yet she was still under the radar.

In contrast Vaidisova enters the grass season in no form at all. I must credit you for making a brave prediction. It certainly is not one I would make, although the impatient hit and hope approach she is taking to her tennis will probably be rewarded somewhat more on grass than it was on clay which requires players to hit a few groundies in the court in order to win a point. Over the course of the 3 grass tournaments Nicole is playing I personally wouldn't be surprised to see her win 3 to 5 matches total providing she at least serves decently.

Nice try, and we will see what happens, but I don't believe we will be seeing lightning striking the same place twice.

I guess you have to know something no one else knows. She certainly has the talent but her form lately doesn't indicate that she will make beyond 2nd round. So unless you know something we don't you will be a lucky guesser if she wins and you should start playing lottery

Oh my god, how far from reality some people can be. What's that thing with the always overrated Vaidisova? It is getting ridiculous.

Everytime she enters a tournament some people start a thread "Vaidisova will win the title". But it never happened. Ridiculous when you look at the reality. She hasn't won any title since Strasbourg 2006, a micky mouse tournament like all the others she has won before. Winning only Tier III is no sign to win a grand slam as well. Why should she win a slam now, after not having won at least a Tier II oder Tier I in so many months/years?

Sorry, I can't undertand this hype.

Sometimes I really laugh about threads like "Serena will win..." or "Venus will win..." also before every tournament they enter, but the difference is that the Williams sisters are established champions and multiple slam winners, so they are always among the favourites.

You seem to be stuck sometime in early 2006. Vaidisova is no longer hyped as a future Grand Slam winner, and hasn't been so for a while. If she still has some backing (sponsors, publicists, agent and so on) it's probably out of inertia and reluctance to admit they put €€€ on the wrong horse and move on.

WTA fines/threatens to fine too much as it is. What they really need to do is target a few repeat offenders and get very hard on them.

That's just nit acceptable!

She's a disgrace to tennis and should be severely punished

Just quit tennis and have child with Radek if you want! So your spot in the draw will benefit to a young player who actually wants to move her fat ass on court!!

I'm not convinced. Statistically, Stosur won this match. She won more points, had a bigger 1st serve, a bigger 2nd serve, far fewer UEs...if it wasn't for the 38% 1st serve %, she'd have walked away with it.

The true current Vaidisova is the one who showed up in set 2. I hope she can start playing better. Unless she does, she will bow out to Dellacqua next round.

I am new to the forum and I want to say this: I have been an avid Nicole Vaidisova fan for at least 2 years. I think that a run to the quarters might be enough to snap her out of this slump and get her back on track. So as a big fan, I think it is more reasonable to pull for a quaterfinal appearance. Physically, she can do it. Mentally, it depends. I hope that Delacqua's game isn't able to win a third match at Wimbledon. Good luck, Nicole!

chaky is gonna beat nicole i just have a feeling that chaky knows how big this chance to make the semi's is and is going to be more stealy than normal. i mean at the us open last year i could just tell that once sharapova lost chaky was gonna make the semis as she had extra motivation, even though everyone backed peer to beat her in the qtrs. glen scharp is realy helping her this week and im sure he will be putting her through a lot of practice the next 2 days and giving her the right advice.

I hope Chakvatadze will be an easier match than people are expecting for Nicole. Both have been lacking confidence so far this year and the difference is success on grass. It is known that Nicole can play here and it is known Anna can't. This is already Anna's best showing at Wimby and said in an interview "It will be hard, but even if I lose this will still be a success." So I'm guessing she has even less confidence. I honestly think/hope Nicole will be able to win it in 2!

Szavay needed 3-sets-3 to take out that disgusting pusher AMG. On grass. I can't even imagine how poorly she must be playing.

Zheng is the player most likely to come out of this 1/4. Imagine that.

its difficult to see how chakvetadze is playing so far though. she has yet to beat a player of any real quality (only 1 top 100 i think). whereas vaidisova's form is clear from the more difficult opposition (except from the love set against stosur which she tanked )
