I think Maria Sharapova has the best shot to become number one very soon she only played 14 tournaments , and has a 4th round at Wimbledon to defend a 3 th round at the US Open and she can only gain poins after that.. a 2 rnd in Moscow she didn t play Zurich , Linz or other tournaments before the YEC.

While it's true that she has little to defend at Wimbledon and the USO, you are also forgetting the 550 points that she has defend in the USO series (and San Diego isn't even a tournament anymore). Also, Ivanovic only has a 4R appearance to defend at USO, and, aside from her Tier II win at Luxembourg, has nothing else to defend in the fall.

Jankovic too doesnt have much to defend, especially after US Open QF. At Wimbledon 4th Round, which i'm sure, she'll go through at least to the QF this year... anyhow, we will have an interesting end to this year, and my guess is the number one at the end of the season might be decided on the Championships in Doha...

It's interesting that she played 4 clay events, and only 3 other tournaments all year.
Then she loses with a mp on her serve.
If she deserves #1, she'll get it back.

Doesn't matter that she has not much to defend.
Fact from this year results are:

1. Ana 2671
3. Maria 2395

Ana will play 18 or 19 tournaments this year, so her total won't be much less than the 17 tournaments that count.

Miami 45
Rome 1

Maria won't have to play on clay anymore, so that's her advantage.

Sharapova can catch up after Wimbledon possibly. Depends on the draw. She then has the USO series points to defend though. She can catch up after USO, but Ana is also likely to improve on her USO showing and her fall wasn't amazing either. She has 316 pts to defend between USO and YEC. She won Luxembourg but then lost in the 2nd and 1st rounds of her next two tourneys.

If my math is right, from now to the end of the year, Ana has 1517 pts to defend while Maria has 1411. If Sharapova shows slam-winning form again, she has a great shot to catch up and stay ahead.

Yes there you got a point , also that the clay season is over;)

Anyone knows how long the Bejing ( Olympic Games) points are counting ..one year?

Sharapova could have it by Wimbledon; however it depends on the draw. Its in her interest for Venus to get bumped to the top 4, because as is they can still meet in the quarters... and i dont like anybodies chances at wimbledon quarterfinal against Venus especially since a Venus/ Sharapova quarter would def be on center court...then theres also davenport floating around for someone in the 3rd round.. so no #1 is def not guranteed for pova...

:spit: Enough with these threads. Ana is #1 at the moment. Let her have her time in the sun.

:) I know. It's just every day there are like 3 more threads saying when Maria will be back at #1 and how Ana isn't the true #1. I do love Maria and hope she gets her fair share of the #1 ranking, but it is Ana's turn for a little while. Maria has had her turn. She will get it back when the time is right. :)
