View Full Version : Do you think Sharapova is overrated and will never win Wimbledon again?

$uricate
Jun 9th, 2008, 02:25 PM
Maria currently has 3 slams under her belt, the first of which was Wimbledon. Since then she has consistently been put forward as a title favourite, but am I the only one that thinks she will never win it again for these reasons?

Her game is not best suited to grass.
She cannot volley to save herself.
Her serve has gotten worse (17 doubles in a match :tape:)
The Williams sister's games are made for this surface, she was lucky Serena was out of sorts when she won.

What do others think?

I have to politely disagree on the point of Serena being "out of sorts". First of all, give credit to Maria who played great and
made her look "out of sorts". Secondly, that was the same tourney where Serena beat Jennifer 6-1, 6-1. Jennifer had always given Serena BIG trouble in GS tournies. So in essence Serena was not "out of sorts".

yes i think she is an overrated player imo
Yes she did luck out in 2004. She realy need to thank the rain God for that. Davenport was kicking her ass before the rain delay but after the rain delay sharapova dominated it.
Serena was just had bad day in the finals. although kudos to sharapova on winning it.

Unless she gets a good draw there, she is no way winning it again.(i will be suprised if she even reaches finals.)

I haven't read anything but my post and the questions, but just as a thought: who else is going to? The next youngest Wimbledon champion is 5 and a half years older than she. The only players who have won a BIG grass title (i.e. Eastbourne or Wimbledon) are, by age, Davenport, Venus, Mauresmo, Serena, Sharapova, and Kuznetsova. The only other top 50 players who have won any WTA grass title are Zvonareva, Jankovic, Chakvetadze, Krajicek, and Daniilidou. It's a slim pool of potential champions on grass, and I don't think many non-grass title players are capable of winning it.

Basically, the only players who are going to be around in five years who we KNOW are capable of really challenging for the title are Sharapova, Kuznetsova, Ivanovic, and possibly Jankovic, Chakvetadze, and Zvonareva. The rest haven't done it yet.

Although I'm optimistic about Azarenka on grass!

I'd be surprised if all, or even most, of those players would still be contending for Slams five years from now. Sharapova most certainly won't.

Maria has proven herself to be more than overrated. Anna Kournikova, Wozniacki, Azarenka--theyre overrated. All this hype and no results.

Volcana

Maria currently has 3 slams under her belt, the first of which was Wimbledon. Since then she has consistently been put forward as a title favourite, but am I the only one that thinks she will never win it again for these reasons?

Her game is not best suited to grass.
She cannot volley to save herself.
Her serve has gotten worse (17 doubles in a match :tape:)
The Williams sister's games are made for this surface, she was lucky Serena was out of sorts when she won.
I really didn't hear or read anyone 'putting forward as a title favourite' this year. Of course, I didn't have the sound on during the match. The announcers are paid to hype.

Serena was not 'out of sorts' in 2004. 'In shock' is more like it.

The serve is an issue. Without it, her lack of footspeed can't be overcome, and her serve is breakable. The groundies are still there. We shouldn't make too much of today's match. She lost to Serena.

Tough to say. I'm not going to write Maria off the way others wrote off the WS around 2005/2006 because as we saw today, Maria can still bring it. The only issue is, can she do it 7 matches in a row to win a major? But next to Serena, no bigger fighter in the majors than Maria so she may be able to.

The moment the sisters retire, Maria's chances to win another slam will skyrocket. She is 5+ years younger. I have to assume she's planning to keep playing, since she's signing all these long term endorsement contracts.

The problem is that generally any request for dialogue on player's performance is regarded as hating around here. It seems there cannot be constructive engageement. having said that i think a lot of things have to align just right. When she has lost most of the time she has lost to an inspired Williams. You really get a sense that she would have won against any other player. I did not watch the match today, but i reckon she played pretty decent ball she just played someone who is better than her on grass and has more confidence at the moment. I say on an off day the Williams lose and she wins! She will win Wimbledon again, unless her injuries woes continue
The language police should forgive me. English is not my first language

No, I don't think Maria is overrated. I think she's approaching her expected level now. I think she came out of the gate fast, players began to get the measure of her, got injured and is now finding her way back.

Maria's advantage - her age! She'll still be around once the Williams sisters have retired, whereas Henin/Clisters are almost the same age and unlikely to outlast them. Of course Maria might have quit by then - her very tall and injury prone frame is surely not likely to keep her going into her 30s.

Like I already said this injury can be a bad thing for a good one I mean Maria couldn't even play for so long she missed the game and now she wants to play as long as her body allows her. She wants more title and yeah she is still young I really hope injuries stay away from her and then everything will be fine.

You don't need to beat the top contenders (some of which she had already beaten) to be underrated. When you're called a pusher by lots of posters, reach a Slam final and reach #3 in the rankings then you are underrated in my book.

You perfectly know what you meant when you said Maria needs to take games away from Serena, you didn't expect the match to be so close. And yeah Maria again failed before QF against Serena(N1 and defending champ I really want to see who else is gonna push Serena in a tie break with this amazing serve) your fave OTOH has more trouble I mean since when Clijsters is a threat on grass courts and Sharapova's level of play is definetely better than Henin's one. I expected Pova to go down 1 and 2, but she played a good match so I give credit were credit is due.

That doesn't change the fact that (again) she couldn't make it further than Justine, Caro or Janko at a non-MM tourney.

What?? If "Justine, Caro, or Janko" had to play the #1 player in the world in the 4th round at Wimbledon, they wouldve lost too. And if "Caro or Janko" had to play Justine Henin in the 3rd round at RG, they wouldve lost as well. I would love to have switched Sharapova and Wozniacki's places in the draw and see where they would be now :)

Wozniacki cant even take advantage of her cakewalk draw and at least Maria has been trying to overcome her tough early round opponents.

She's 23 years of age. The only other active players with 80%+ win rates are Kim Clijsters (27), Justine Henin (28), Serena Williams (28) and Venus Williams (30).

Compared that to Maria's closest competitor in the "under 25 years of age" area. Ana Ivanovic (22) with a 72% win rate. Big, big gap.

I think Sharapova has plenty of fight left in her. But she really needs to have a break once in a while. To be honest, she's not as athletic as the other girls. She's physically fragile. But boy does this girl have a willpower of steel! She has the attitude of a champion. Unfortunately for her, she's still in the shadow of her elite veteran peers. Maybe in 4-5 more years, we can have a clear picture of Sharapova's career.

Seriously, with all the money Sharapova's making outside of tennis, she could just say "Hahahaha! It was good while it lasted". But is she gone? No. She's still on the tour, working hard and climbing the mountain once more. This is why I admire her despite her more recent shortcomings.

OsloErik
Jun 30th, 2010, 04:38 AM
I'd be surprised if all, or even most, of those players would still be contending for Slams five years from now. Sharapova most certainly won't.

Here we are, 2 years later, and Chakvetadze and Ivanovic have fallen off a cliff, Kuznetsova is following them, Sharapova still can't serve consistently, Jankovic still isn't a grass-court elite player, and Zvonareva, of all players, is in the Wimbledon semifinals. Strange.
