Well done both Russian Maria's, Anna B., Vera and Ashley! Nina got crushed again. This girl needs to do some re-evaluating. Because since Wimbledon, she has been getting crushed by nearly everyone she has played.

P.S. - Why is Mikaelian seeded #1?

P.P.S. - Why did they start this tournament on Sunday instead of Monday?

Why is Marie-Gaiane even playing? She's been playing lots of junior tournaments over the past few weeks, but she's a top 100 senior player who's had a full year on the WTA Tour, including a final and a victory over Elena Dementieva! She shouldn't need to play juniors again.

sartrista7, I agree with you. Mikaelian does not need to be playing this event. She crushed Elena Dementieva in Switzerland. She is ready for the pros. It's not fair to these juniors, many of whom are lightweights, to have to play someone as strong as Mikaelian. Maybe Kim Clijsters should be playing, too!

P.S. - Why was the 18u draw revised?

TheBoiledEgg

THAT'S THE BEST NEWS I HEAR TODAY FROM MY DEVOTED MARIA SHARAPOVA'S MATCH! WHAT A MATCH! I KNEW IT that she found a way to win this time! I don't have high expectations from Maria's next match against Marion Bartoli(4)(FRA) but she has a better chance to beat this French girl than the top 2 seeded players, Marie Gaiane Mikaelian and Svetlana Kuznetsova. All I want from Maria was to GET HER SWEET REVENGE against Barbora. And she DID for me!! I am "very hearted" happy! I LOVE YOU, MARIA! The match of the day in the girls’ draw saw 14-year-old Maria Sharapova of Russia outlast No. 9 seed Barbora Strycova of Czech Republic, 1-6, 6-4, 7-6 (4). The final singles match of the day lasted two hours and 46 minutes with the third and decisive set taking up nearly half the time. Sharapova served for the match and led 5-3, 30-15 in the final set, but Strycova rallied for a 6-5 advantage by winning 11of the next 14 points. Sharapova then broke to force the tiebreaker, which she won to advance to the third round.

Sharky, it was a nice surprise to wake up this morning and learn that Maria the "Russian Lynx" Sharapova, had upset Barbora Strycova. But in typical Russian female fashion(the Russian girls love fashion!), she couldn't serve out the match. Maria had to do it the hard way. Sharky, why do you think Maria has a better chance to beat Bartoli than either Mikaelian or Kuznetsova? They are much bigger and stronger than Maria. More experienced, too. I would love for Masha to pull off another big upset. But because her match against Strycova was an emotional and long 3 set match, late in the day, I don't think Maria will have her usual energy in todays match against Bartoli. Maybe todays action will be rained out. Can you do a Vancouver to Miami Beach rain dance, Sharky?

P.S. - Wow! Tatiana is crushing her opponents! I hope she is developing a killer instinct!

P.P.S. - I am very annoyed that the Miami Herald isn't covering the Orange Bowl online. Last week, they covered the Sunshine Cup and Connolly Continental Cup team tournaments online. But thus far, to my surprise and dissapointment, they haven't done anything on the 2001 Orange Bowl.

Hurray for little Masha's(Kirilenko) good win today! Only one day after big Masha(Sharapova)upset the #9 seed. It's been a great Orange Bowl for the Russian Maria's!

P.S. Janie, I am glad you are rooting for Tatiana Golovin. But don't forget about Maria Sharapova and Ashley Harkleroad. Come to think of it, you were pretty critical of what Ashley and Maria were wearing a couple of months ago. You thought they were too young to be wearing such revealing tennis outfits. Right? Well did you see what 13 year old Tatiana was wearing at the Eddie Herr tournament? I thought she looked good. But then I thought of you, and how you would think she is too young to wear such an outfit. But that's the way IMG markets their talented and attractive young female tennis players. If you didn't see that photo of Tatiana, it's located at www.*****************/Tournaments/International/2001/November/EddieHerr/Friday.htm

Ashley gets easy draws???? There's always something to criticize with her! She gets to where she gets because she's good, who would you have liked her to play? Lopez-Herrera a solid player, and Kustava is a very good young player. And where else has she gotten an easy draw? She's beaten a lot of top players such as Dlhopolcova, Zvonoreva etc. I don't feel like looking up all her results but I know she doesn't always get easy draws. She got to 3 slam semis this year so I'm tired of everyone criticizing her and her game. Sorry i'm ranting, but it seems like around every corner someone's there to criticize Ashley

No. 2 seed Svetlana Kuznetsova, the girls’ singles runner-up at the Wimbledon and US Open girls’ this summer, came back from 2-5 in the final set and saved four match points in her second round match against Karolina Sprem before winning 6-1, 4-6, 7-6 (2) in just under two and a half hours. She will face No. 16 seed Bethanie Mattek in the only third round match pitting seeded players against each other.

No. 1 seed Marie-Gaiane Mikaelian hopes to repeat her success against Neyssa Etienne in their third round meeting. Mikaelian defeated Etienne in the US Open girls’ singles quarterfinals this summer.

The only other match on Wednesday between two girls’ who have already met on the ITF World Junior circuit will see Melanie Marois and Virag Nemeth meet in a rematch of their US Open first round encounter, won narrowly by Nemeth, 7-6 (3), 4-6, 7-5.

No. 4 seed Marion Bartoli of France, the reigning Orange Bowl Girls’ 16s singles champion, will face the highly-touted Maria Sharapova. The winner of that match will face the winner of an all-American battle between No. 5 Ashley Harkleroad and Alexandra Liles in the quarterfinals.

It's been a great tournament for the Russian girls! Let's hope it continues! They have 5 girls in the round of 16. Plus Tatiana, who was Russian born!

P.S. - Has Svetlana clinched the #1 ranking yet? I'm pretty sured she is tired at this point. Which makes her vulnerable to being upset. If she hasn't clinched the year ending #1 ranking, I sure hope her friend, Anna B. helps her out by upsetting Birnerova today. After all, what are friends for? Udachi Anna B. and the rest of the Russian Federation!

P.P.S. - I'm sure glad Maria Sharapova got a day off to rest before her match with Bartoli today. Maria showed me alot by coming back to beat Strycova, after being whipped 6-1 in the first set. Udachi Maria!

P.P.P.S. - Don't be surprised if Tatiana upsets Vera today. Vera is the defending champion, and is probably feeling the pressure to defend her title.

If Eva goes further than Svetlana then she'll most likely pass her in the rankings, and if she doesn't, then she'll still be playing the Yucatan Cup the following week to try and finish up the year at #1, so it's going to be close. If Sveta can do significantly better than Eva here, then it's going to be tough for Eva to catch her. Bartoli can also still finish year end #1 depending on her result, and Svetlana and Eva losing before her.

TheBoiledEgg
Dec 12th, 2001, 05:16 PM
Randy only best 6 ranks count ...

Sveta has 2 Slams r/u plus Wimby SF
and also points from Connolly Cup (260)
This was before start of tourn ( last weeks ranks)
Now Sveta leads by 30.

In the girls’ competition, Czech Republic’s Eva Birnerova heads the singles rankings and has a 70 point advantage over Russia’s Svetlana Kuznetsova who lies third. Second-placed Kaia Kanepi, Roland Garros champion, is not competing in the Orange Bowl, leaving the way open for Kuznetsova and perhaps even for Bartoli, who is fourth-ranked, to do well. Kuznetsova needs to reach the final to gain the title, unless the Russian team win the ITF Connolly Continental Cup, in which case a semi-final showing would be good enough, if not bettered by Birnerova.

It's too bad the Masha's got crushed by identical 6-2 6-1 scores. They are both only 14, and perhaps they are in a little over their heads right now, when it comes to playing the very best girls in the 18's. That's the disadvantage of being 14 and very slim. Maria Sharapova is 14, and Marion Bartoli, her opponent today is 17. That age difference makes a big difference in the juniors. Right? Maria Sharapova's 18u record is a sparkling 21-3. That's a fine start to her 18u career. She has played a few 18u tournaments with opponents that she can handle. Now comes the tough part. Throwing her in there against the 18u elite, and hoping she can gradually improve, and learn how to take an occasional thrashing. Like she did today. But her tremendous second round win over the much stronger and much more experienced Barbora Strycova should give her alot of confidence. Unfortunately, it took alot out of her.

P.S. - Well done Anna B.!

P.P.S. - Too bad for Tatiana! I guess Vera got lucky. Tatiana turned another win into a loss. Just like at the Eddie Herr. But she's only 13, and is ready for the 18's. Tatiana just needs to learn how to win. She is probably more physically ready for the 18's, than either 14 year old Masha.

P.P.P.S. - Eggy, which Maria dissapointment were you talking about?

P.P.P.P.S. - Congratulations to Svetlana Kuznetsova on becoming the ITF's year end #1 player. Are you sure, Eggy?

Good luck to my other fave Marie-Gaiane too.

cat, I think it is the sponsors who are dressing the youngsters up like Britney Spears, with the enthusiastic consent of agents, parents, and the kidds themselves. The trend is moving very rapidly toward bikini tops. At this rate, in another year or two it will be G-strings.

Yes, they are being somewhat revealing, but I don't see how you can't like a player just because of how they dress. You don't know their personality, game style, background etc. and to base who you like just because someone is unhyped or hyped is kind of weird. Plus its not their fault they're dressing that way. That's what Nike or the other clothing companies came up with. Probably Bartoli and Mikaelian also wear revealing clothes. Would you not like them then?

the cat
Dec 13th, 2001, 12:50 AM
Oh Janie! Was that Marion Bartoli "un-hyped" comment, a little dig at the "Russian Lynx"(Maria Sharapova)? Bartoli is very good. But she is 17, and Sharapova is only 14. That makes a big difference in junior tennis. How do you think Maria Sharapova would fair against an 11 year old girl? Total domination! But now Bartoli is going to have to play girls her own age. Such as Ashley Harkleroad. Let's see her dominate Ashley the way she did Maria. I don't think that's going to happen. Because Marion beat Ashley at the 2001 junior U.S. Open, I know Ashley is out for revenge!

P.S. - Janie, I don't think the revealing tennis outfits will get as risque as you think they will. At least I hope not. I would assume that all of these girls have good values. I would think that common sense from their parents and agents will prevail in the long run. At least I hope so!
If Marion Bartoli can defeat Ashley Harkleroad again, she may be able to win a singles title at the BURGER KING Orange Bowl… again.

Seeded fourth Bartoli, the reigning US Open girls’ singles champion, dominated Russian upstart Maria Sharapova, 6-2, 6-1, to advance to the Girls' 18s quarterfinals. She will face No. 5 Ashley Harkleroad on Friday in a rematch of the US Open semifinals.

"Ashley is a very good player," said Bartoli. "Last time I won by an easy score, but I expect a tough match. It’s good because I know how to play her. All the girls in the draw are young, though, and we improve a lot quickly."

Bartoli builds her game around her aggressive return of service. She is a fixture on service line when receiving, which can frighten her opponents into numerous service errors and tentative play.

"I didn’t serve well against her (Bartoli) the first time we played," admits Harkleroad. "In fact, I wasn’t serving well the entire US Open, but I’ve been hitting my serves well this week and I expect to give her a better match."

Bartoli, the Orange Bowl Girls’ 16s champion last year, is trying to become just the sixth player to win the Girls’ 18s title here after capturing the 16s since the tournament added the younger age group in 1962.

Players who have won the Orange Bowl

If Bartoli can get through Harkleroad, a rematch of the US Open singles final may be at hand if No. 2 seed Svetlana Kuznetsova can get past No. 6 seed and reigning Australian Open girls’ champion Jelena Jankovic in their quarterfinal match, also scheduled for Friday.

Kuznetsova overpowered Bethanie Mattek, 6-4, 6-3, in the only third round Girls’ 18s singles match between two seeded players. Kuznetsova, who took over the World No. 1 singles ranking this week after leading Russia to the ITF Connolly Continental Cup title, will try to relinquish her bridesmaid roll following loses in the girls’ singles finals at Wimbledon and the US Open this summer.

In Thursday’s quarterfinal action, No. 1 seed Marie-Gaiane Mikaelian will face No. 8 Vera Zvonareva and unseeded Anna Bastrikova will play No. 7 Virag Nemeth. Bastrikova upset No. 3 seed Eva Birnerova in the third round, virtually ending the Czech teenager’s chances of ending the year ranked No. 1.
Tatiana Golovin was up a set and 4-1 , then Vera fought back.

Maria Sharapova v Bartoli was a lot closer match than the scoreline suggests , lots of deuce games.

This is fantastic news! Udachi RF(Russian Federation)!

P.S. - Eggy, where do you get your detailed reports from? The junior websites have limited information. But you seem to know more. Such as the Bartoli/Sharapova match was closer than it looked. You said there were alot of games that went to duece. How do you know?

P.P.S. - I am so happy for Anna Bastrikova! She is lovely, too. Watching Anna B. playing Anna K. would be a soothing sight for sore eyes! Udachi Anna's!

Oh no! Ashley lost. She just can't seem to get over the hump, as far as winning a major junior tournament goes. But losing to Bartoli is no disgrace. Marion is a fine player, and a very good pro prospect.

I just don't know what her problem is. She always seems to get to the later stages, but like you said she can't get over the hump. She tends to get very negative when things are not going her way, which is always detrimental to the confidence level. At least she made some inroads, she won a set, in a tie break which had to be mentally tough and I heard the there were alot of long games.

Congratulations to Svetlana Kuznetsova! On making the Orange Bowl semifinals and becoming the ITF junior wotld champion.

P.S. - Eggy, Ashley a lightweight? She devoured the Russian girls when she played them this year. Including Vera Zvonareva and Anna Bastrikova, who are in the Orange Bowl semifinals. Ashley's problem is a lack of mental toughness.

P.P.S. - TBE, Dinara Safina would be in the Orange Bowl semifinals? I doubt it. Dinara is injury prone. She already has back trouble. And hard courts are very "hard" on the body. They are called "hard" courts, afterall. I think Dinara's mother held her out of the Orange Bowl because she is worried about her back and knees on the hardcourts. Followers of junior tennis know what the hard courts have done to Eva Birnerova's knees. And that's a shame. Even though I wish Dinara was here. Her mother knows best. Nina Brattchikova was having a good year. She played well at the junior French Open and the junior Wimbledon. Then she plays on the hard courts starting in August, and she can hardly win a match, or even be competetive in hard court tournaments. It's too bad so many junior tournaments are played on hardcourts. Hardcourts are just no good for youn growing bodies. I sure hope Dinara will be okay for next year.

cat ... what i meant was Ashley isn't a power player , her game isn't all make or break. She beat Vera and Anna cos they play a bit similar to she does.

Dinara , i said if she was fit she would have made SF. She isn't that much injury prone , just has had a recent injury and not recovered.

Sveta came from a set and 1-2 down and won the next 11 games , pretty impressive , lucky she went for a bathroom break after 1st set.

Marion let slip a 6-1 4-1 lead .... but she woke up and made no mistake in the final set.

Vera Zvonareva was 17 in Sep
Anna Bastrikova just turned 16 last month
Sveta is 16 , but ITF Junior Champs always tend to turn pro straight the following year.

next year there will be Anna Bastrikova , Dinara Safina , the two Maria's but one who has got it all Vera Douchevina , height power and shot making of the highest quality.

Congratulations to Russia for having the second all Russian Orange Bowl girls final in 4 years. I think Svetlana needs to win a junior major title for everyone to believe she is the real #1. But Vera is playing so well. For Russian tennis fans, it's all good! Russia won the boys Sunshine Cup and girls Connolly Continentel Cup last week. Now this week, an all Russian girls final in the Orange Bowl. It's just tremendous! Udachi RF(Russian Federation)!
