View Full Version : Who is the best volleyer in the Top 10?

InsideOut.

Justine was definitely the best volleyer before her retirement. Now that she's gone, who is the best?

I actually think Sveta has the best technique at net but Venus is the most effective volleyer for sure (she always wins most of her net points)

Jun 8th, 2008, 10:03 AM
Ana's net skills have improved a lot, especially on the backhand side. Has a great punch volley:)

I think venus has the best volley now, purely due to her presence in the forecourt. She has great anticipation and great reach due to her height, and technically her backhand volley is a good, solid volley. Less effective on clay or on a slow hardcourt, but on grass and fast hardcourts, you see that effectiveness at the net.

Look out for Serena's volley's under pressure. Amazing:worship:

Venus is a good volleyer because of her court coverage.

Technically, Sveta or Daniela would be my pick.

Sveta.

Jun 8th, 2008, 11:24 AM
Kuzzy her technique on the forehand volley is near perfect and the backhand volley is good, too. After that Dinara.

Masha and Venus if you count swing volleys are a force at the net as well, but not as much as Kuzzy/Dinara.

Since the rankings to be updated only on Monday I'd say it's Hantuchova.
Out of the listed players -- Kuznetsova.

Hantuchova, who is in the top 10. Dinara is not officially in the top 10 until the new rankings are published. :)

In my opinion Daniela's volleys are a bit overrated. She can be brilliant, but she can suck just as well.

I voted for Svetlana.

Svetlana Kuznetsova

I'd say that her technique is flawless, but her volleys can break down under pressure. You'd be correct in saying that Svetlana is more consistent.

i voted for chaky because she didn't have a vote :cries: and although anna thinks the net is diseased and dosen't go near it if at all possible, i felt sorry for her.

as for the rest of the top 10, venus is the most accomplished with serena in 2nd, jj is a good volleyer as is sveta but they dont stick their volleys and make them count like the williams sisiters do.

I voted Kuznetsova, but I'd actually argue for Venus. She has the better wingspan so she can get to more balls.

Kuznetsova for easy to moderately difficult volleys. Venus for those involving a long reach. Justine was the best by far for her ability to pick up volleys off her shoelaces, anticipate, hit overheads and stab volleys. She had it all except wingspan but she made up for that with quick feet and anticpitation and great first volleys or approaches. JJ, Dementieva have the weakest wrists on the one handed backhand volley and very little touch at all.

None of them are good volley-ers. Some of them are effective when they get to the net.

Venus. Her Wimbledon stats prove it alone.

The best volleyer on the tour is Amelie. Alot of the young Chinese girls know how to volley well also. Lisa Raymond is a good volleyer. Pascual is another one. I know this is about top ten, but I couldnt count out good solid volleyers.

AcesHigh
Jun 9th, 2008, 04:29 AM
btw, totally irrelevant but went to look up Kuznetsova in a doubles match on youtube and finally saw the Kuzy/Petrova, Black/Huber controversial smash. :spit:

But seriously, I think Kuzy has good volleys

What? She was part of the first major successful doubles team where NEITHER player played the net. She and Suarez only came forward when forced to.

They did play at net. Only on their first serves though. Otherwise, they'd move back. Just my observation.

None of them are good volley-ers. Some of them are effective when they get to the net.

I think that of the top 10, Kuznetsova has the best volleys from a technical standpoint (because Navratilova probably would have killed her had she not improved them), but Venus is more effective at the net because of her reach and speed. But both Venus and Serena have VERY good volleys. Venus' reach tips the scale in her favor, though.

OsloErik
Jun 9th, 2008, 08:51 AM

But they certainly weren't great volleyers. They were good, but they couldn't hit Mauresmo-Henin volleyes, or Venus-Kuznetsova-Serena volleys either.

Polikarpov
Jun 9th, 2008, 09:29 AM
Do you mean they still hit volleys today?

But if I have to pick one. It would be Venus. She's not a great volleyer, but because of her long wingspan, she's very effective at the net.

That's not true. She won them because she was able to outsmart her opponents by a wide variety of shots from the baseline and perfect reading of the game, and also because she picked the right partners.

That's not true at all. I saw three of her mixed doubles matches at the '05 French, and she stayed back only on her own 2nd serves and her opponents 1st serves when she couldn't move forward. Other than that, all net play.

That's about half of all points. And I didn't write she wasn't at the net, of course she was, but her volleys weren't the main factor behind those wins, which is what the poster I responded to wrote.

edit: besides, I don't know where you saw she goes to the net after 1st serve. Given her movement abilities, especially forward, and rather average speed of her 1st serve she wouldn't reach the optimal position in time, thus would get passed or would have to hit a difficult approach shot, which would be suicidal. Aside from Chinese players very few girls go to the net after serve. I saw enough doubles matches to say that Daniela doesn't either.

She is about the only player, aside from Mauresmo, who actually knows how to place a volley.
