Kuznetsova targets second win

By Mike Donovan (mike.donovan@theargus.co.uk)

Former champion Svetlana Kuznetsova will aim to win her second Eastbourne crown next week.
The world No.4 confirmed her entry for the International Women's Open yesterday.

She replaces injured French starlet Tatiana Golovin, who had been on the original entry list, in the main draw.

http://ads.newsquest.co.uk/RealMedia/ads/Creatives/default/empty.gif (http://ads.newsquest.co.uk/RealMedia/ads/click_lx.ads/www.theargus.co.uk/sport/argusgeneralsportsnews/display.var.2332657.0.kuznetsova_targets_second_wi n.php/1724830094/Frame2/default/empty.gif/34663932323461303438346664393230)
The 22-year-old, one of five Russians inside the top ten, hopes to bounce back from her defeat against compatriot Dinara Safina in the French Open semi-finals last week.

Kuznetsova has an impressive record on grass.
She sealed the Devonshire Park crown on her debut four years ago.
Her final victory over Slovakian Daniela Hantuchova was followed by runs to the last-four in 2005 and 2006.
She has also reached the Wimbledon quarter-finals three times.

Nicole Vaidisova, the world No.19. has also been included.
The blonde Czech, often compared to Maria Sharapova in looks, reached the quarter-finals last year before falling to eventual champion Justine Henin.
Vaidisova, 19, who has a career high of No.7, has won six WTA Tour titles. They join a field which is headed by French Open champion Ana Ivanovic, who was named world No.1 this week.

Marion Bartoli, last year's beaten Wimbledon finalist, is the other top-tenner so far confirmed.
Tournament director Gavin Fletcher said: "I'm delighted that Svetlana and Nicole will be playing in Eastbourne.
The box office number is 01323 412 000.

Jun 12th, 2008, 06:49 AM
Ana withdrew from Eastbourne due to a right abductor tendinopathy and she's mentally exhausted after the French Open.

So if you look at the player entry list, does that mean that Svetlana will be ranked No1 in this tournament?

Jun 12th, 2008, 02:39 PM
Yes,I think Sveta is now the first seed in this tournament

Jun 16th, 2008, 11:14 PM
As I guessed, then, she won't be playing her first Singles match till Wednesday.
The forecast doesn't look great for Wednesday. In fact Thursday and Friday could be showery too, but then again, things were similar last year yet Eastbourne managed to miss the showers so we might be okay. Anyway, I hope and trust that Sveta will be able to cope. And I'll be there to cheer her on Thursday onwards...

Vamos! :smoke:

Jun 17th, 2008, 11:21 PM
Good luck, Sveta, for tomorrow. Hopefully she'll win, then I'll get to see her on Thursday in the quarters.
Looks like Eastbourne should avoid most of the rain which is expected across many areas of England tomorrow. And, by perusing various forecast sources, I've been able to make up a kind of 'ensemble' of forecasts, and most of them don't look too bad for the following days, as hopefully most of the showers will miss the south coast.

Wozniacki stuns Kuznetsova

By Sam Hart
EASTBOURNE debutant Caroline Wozniacki caused a major upset by beating number one seed Svetlana Kuznetsova in front of a large crowd on a windy centre court.
Danish Wozniacki, who is just 17 years of age, broke the tournament favourite's serve to take a 3-2 lead in the first set and never looked back.

The out of sorts Kuznetsova then served three double faults in a row before being broken again, allowing Wozniacki to confidently serve out the set 6-2.

The highly rated world number 32 easily matched her Russian opponent in the rallies, forcing her into uncharacteristic mistakes.

The Dane picked up where she left off to begin the second set, breaking serve once more in the first game, causing an obviously rattled Kuznetsova to lose her cool and smash her racquet to the ground.

Wozniacki continued to keep the world number four on the ropes en route to a surprisingly comfortable 6-2, 6-2 victory.

Jun 18th, 2008, 03:09 PM
Not her day . Seems as if it was a terrible match! Hope she'll act better at Wimby!

Thanks for your great photos!

Top-seeded Kuznetsova upset by Wozniacki in 2nd round at Eastbourne

EASTBOURNE, England (http://www.iht.com/articles/ap/2008/06/18/sports/EU-SPT-TEN-Eastbourne.php#): Top-seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova was eliminated from the Eastbourne International Women's Open on Wednesday, losing 6-2, 6-2 to Danish teenager Caroline Wozniacki in the second round.
The Wimbledon warmup event lost another top name when Amelie Mauresmo, who lost to Justine Henin in last year's final, retired when leading Samantha Stosur 2-1. Second-seeded Marion Bartoli advanced, showing no sign of her recent wrist injury as she overwhelmed Sybille Bammer 6-3, 6-0.
Kuznetsova never looked comfortable in the windy conditions and Wozniacki, who won the Wimbledon junior event two years ago, broke her serve in the opening game. Kuznetsova broke right back and had three breakpoints at 2-1, but then lost the next nine points to let the Dane take a 3-2 lead.
Kuznetsova then had three straight double-faults as Wozniacki broke again for 5-2. The 17-year-old Wozniacki then jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second set.
"It was pretty disgusting being out there," Kuznetsova said. "I wish I could play better but the first match on grass I think is very hard. She had much more of an advantage because she was used to it. It was a weird situation and definitely not nice to be out there at all."

Kuznetsova now enters Wimbledon next week having played just one grass-court match.
"At least I've played some and I have a few days to practice," she said. "Definitely I'm very disappointed because I hoped to play a few more matches, but this is tennis and it can happen."

Jun 18th, 2008, 05:56 PM
Oh man  Another bad day at the office  Come on Svetlana! Pull it together for Wimbledon!!

Jun 18th, 2008, 06:27 PM
anyone watch the match??

why Sveta lost like this??

Jun 18th, 2008, 06:29 PM
This is too bad. The scoreline suggests either she was hardly trying, or else she is injured; in either case, I reckon it doesn't bode too well for next week.
Mary, thanks for those great photos. Hope to see you there tomorrow - whether Sveta is still around or not!

For me, ironically it is an identical scenario to January 2007. I flew into Sydney on the morning of quarter-finals day, the week before the Australian Open, only to discover that Sveta had lost (in fact withdrawn with a viral infection on that occasion) in her second-round match the day before. I went along to Olympic Park (the Sydney tournament venue) and was lucky to see Sveta on a practice court at least. So I do have the hope that I might see her practicing when I get to Eastbourne tomorrow, before she moves on to Wimbledon.

Jun 18th, 2008, 07:24 PM
Well, imo, I think the new serve still isn't consistent. I saw her practice w/
Bartoli earlier in the week, and Sveta served something like 3 aces in a row
on Bartoli. But today, the first serve wouldn't go in. Without her serve, Sveta
had lots of trouble, got frustrated. 1st set, Sveta returned pretty well--it was
closer than the scoreline indicated.

2nd set, Sveta started rushing a bit, looked like she wanted to be off the
court as soon as possible. She went to the net more in the 2nd set and had
some success--very impressive, but she was in too deep of a hole and made
many unforced errors.

Sveta, sweetheart that she is, gave me a signed shirt afterwards. She's had
a terrible loss, and she still thought of her fans. She's incognito--hard
to catch on the grounds unless you look really closely.

Rotten day. Both Sveta out and Mauresmo injured. (But I'm glad I'm here,
though I'm freezing right now.)

Jun 18th, 2008, 09:04 PM
glad you are having fun!! and yes sveta I a sweetheart but already knew that a friend and I wrote a letter and asked for pic with signature. I live in the netherlands so it takes 5 days for te letter get there and 5 back but I already had the pic after 2 weeks with signature. You always hear that it takes ages to have respons but sveta took admediatly(dont know how to write that) time to respons and that is 1 of the things I like about her.

Jun 19th, 2008, 12:27 AM
Sveta :awww:

Jun 19th, 2008, 09:56 AM

Jun 19th, 2008, 02:10 PM
Thank you,Mary!!! :D I love your photos, specially the first one.Too bad her adventure in Eastbourne is already over  Will you stay until the final?

Jun 19th, 2008, 06:38 PM
Yep. I'm here til the final. (I came a long way. I'm homesick right now--would fly home if I could, but I'm in the UK for a bit longer.) Saw Sveta's exhibition. The serve is still hit-and-miss. She did some serve-and-volley, which was wonderful. I like that a lot (but I'm old, so of course I like that.)

I met tim today!

Jun 19th, 2008, 07:06 PM
Cool, hope you had a great time with tim :D

I also like when she serves and volleys (it's an interesting change).I wish she would do it more often,at least on grass.

Someone posted a report earlier on GM describing Sveta as lethargic and not wanting to be out there. Here is the report:

BTW, Sveta played the worst game of tennis I've ever seen her play. She looked lethargic and certainly didn't want to be out there. Don't know what was wrong with her, but after 3 games, she had the trainer out and she gave her some tablets to take - don't know what that was about, there was no sign of injury, perhaps she just didn't feel well - she was certainly walking around and playing like she was unwell.
off-topic: today was announced the Fed Cup final will be held in Madrid.I cross my fingers so that Sveta will play.

Jun 20th, 2008, 09:28 AM

Jun 20th, 2008, 09:32 AM
In the 2nd set against Caroline, Sveta did rush between points and
looked like she wanted to be off the court. I assumed that was because
she was frustrated w/ her play.

In the exhibition on Thursday, Sveta was stretching (hamstrings? I
remember her saying that the change from clay to grass makes her
butt hurt) during the last changeover (3rd set.)
